(MY View) Why the NFL Must Suspend San Francisco 49er for His Anti-Gay Remarks!

San Francisco 49er Chris Culliver selfishly shot off his mouth yesterday, igniting a firestorm of controversy and creating a nightmare for his team and the National Football League as they head to the Super Bowl. For that alone the NFL should suspend him, his comments having put his entire team at the center of an unnecessary controversy as they're trying to focus on the game.

But for the horrendously bigoted, anti-gay content of his remarks, there is no question that Culliver must be suspended if the NFL is serious about its claims to be taking on homophobia in its ranks. Thanks to players like Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendan Ayanbadejo and their pro-gay advocacy, we're seeing a shift among NFL players, but the leadership needs to take strong stand against Culliver's kind of bigotry if that shift is to continue.

Going Back to OUTview's first year in 2009, we focused on issues that we cared about and one by one change was happening. Our first Podcast on January 31, 2009 happened a month earlier than planned and MK had to jump through hurdles to get this special completed. This was the week that Portland was going through a firestorm with the Scandal of Mayor Sam Adams and his relationship with former intern, Beau Breedlove. It was revealed that Adams had lied during his Mayoral Campaign in 2007 about his relationship with Breedlove. Many (Including Oregon's Gay Publication, 'Just Out') was calling for Adams to resign. One Man, Elliot Young, Professor at Portland’s Lewis and Clark College, was one of the first to start the ‘Support Sam’ campaign. Young spent several days being interviewed by the local media and graciously accepted the invitation to chat with OUTview. Adams didn't resign, and after 2 failed Recalls, left City Hall feet first in December 2012.

(EDDIE's view) ReCap of RDR Season 5, Week 1!

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Five has finally arrived, with fourteen queens all fighting to be America’s Next Drag Super Star. And after watching the first episode, I think there’s a strong possibility we may see our first ever plus-size Drag Super Star crowned. But I’ll get to that in a minute.

As is the custom, the first episode opens with the ‘meet & greet’, and ‘controversy & drama’. This season’s big controversy is Alaska (29 - Pittsburgh, PA). Alaska is partners with Season Four winner, Sharon Needles. And in my opinion, Sharon Needles is the only reason she’s a contestant on Season Five. After watching Alaska through this first episode, I can see why the producers never chose her to be a contestant four seasons in a row. It’s no big secret that both Sharon and Alaska are recovering addicts. And it’s obvious that Alaska is heavily medicated. Lithium probably, maybe Xanax, but definitely something. Alaska’s entire demeanor is dry and muted, lacking that sparkle I see in every other girl on the show. Alaska is definitely this season’s ‘mercy’ contestant.

Never talk to strangers. As children, this is one of the first life lessons repeatedly taught to us. It’s drilled into our developing minds by our mothers as they send us off to school. We’re educated on the subject of “stranger danger” by elementary school teachers, in hopes that they’ll see our innocent faces in class the next day. If a stranger invites you into his car, run. If a stranger tries to talk to you, ignore him. Don’t let him tempt you with candy or money. Find an adult immediately. We’re taught the worst possible scenario. Ultimately, we grow up learning that strangers are capable of any number of heinous acts. But what happens when the stranger becomes the hero of the story? How do we react when the person we’re taught to avoid has become our savior?

I wake up in a tangle of damp sheets. The dull, gray light of an overcast day peeks at me through the vertical blinds of a bedroom I’ve never seen. I quickly panic and sit bolt upright. It feels like a fog has invaded my brain, limiting any clear thought. I’m thirsty; my tongue is veritably sticking to the roof of my mouth. I observe my surroundings and discover a cherry wood dresser bureau, a matching computer desk, and nightstands on either side of the bed in which I sit. Nothing but standard bedroom furniture. I’m in my underwear, which has me continuously attempting to recollect the events of last night. I instantly begin scanning the floor to locate my t-shirt and jeans.

Seattle Based Actor and Drag Superstar, Jinkx Monsoon is on the verge of Super Stardom. This Past Month, Monsoon was seen on the Seattle Stage in Delacreme's  'Homo for the Holidays', and Balagan's 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch", which is closing this weekend. On Monday, Monsoon makes her national TV Debut on Season 5 of Rupaul's Drag Race. As Actor, Jerick Hoffer, it is about his craft. So I caught up with the Man about his creation and How he is Handling his busy schedule and what to expect on Drag Race.

(WINTER HUNKS) Jason Statham from PARKER!

Jason Statham, 45.  is an English actor, producer, martial artist, and former diver known for his roles in the Guy Ritchie crime films Revolver, Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Statham appeared in supporting roles in several American films, such as The Italian Job, as well as playing the lead role in The Transporter, Death Race, Crank, The Bank Job and War (opposite martial arts star Jet Li). Statham also appeared alongside established action film actors Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren in The Expendables and The Expendables 2. He usually performs his own stage combat and stunts. This week he plays the title role of Parker, in the film, PARKER, opposite J.Lo!

(GAY DAYS) Will tries to figure it out; Nick plots; grandparents are weighing in; Will gleeful after seeing daughter during sonogram; begs Sonny for forgiveness!

 

Lots of good stuff  this week including a wonderful heart-to-heart where Will explains to EJ what led to his having sex with Gabi. He then goes on to share how he felt when he became involved with Sonny, how he let go of worrying about what anyone thought and found happiness.

So when Gabi told him she was pregnant, he wanted it not to be true.

Meanwhile, both sides are lawyering up and there will likely be a legal battle. Nick thinks he’s got an edge because he knows Will’s dad went to prison for him – but he doesn’t appear to know why.


Nick is INSANE! (I asked his portrayer, Blake Berris, and his response? "Never Call me that, Never!") He’s determined to squeeze Will out of his own baby’s life and even makes a remark that the baby doesn’t need three daddies (counting Sonny). WHOA!

Meanwhile, all of the grandparents and family members and basically the rest of Salem are weighing in on the baby situation.REMEMBER THE BABY Hasn't BEEN BORN YET!

Will joins Gabi and Nick at the hospital for the baby’s sonogram and learns he is going to be the father of a baby girl. The moment gives him a real clarity about being a father for the first time and he is overjoyed by it. He runs into former stepdad Rafe, Gabi’s brother, and they have a beautiful heart-to-heart before he finally goes to visit Sonny for an emotional talk and a plea for forgiveness. Sonny Needs time.  WATCH BELOW!

(MY VIEW) Women in Combat: The Lessons of Progress!

Seemingly out of nowhere, the Pentagon announced this week that it would lift its ban on women in combat. Just like that. No years-long Washington lobbying campaign, no protracted national culture-war debate, no threats by conservatives in Congress to do everything humanly possible to block progress -- in other words, nothing like the decades-long fight the nation saw over letting gays and lesbians serve openly in the military.

The differences between the two political battles are stark, yet the substance of the two debates has great overlap. In both cases, advocates of equality pointed out that merit and ability to do the job should be more important than the cultural beliefs of one segment of society, and they showed that there was no research indicating that equal treatment harmed the military. Opponents of both open gays and women in combat cited concerns about military effectiveness, suggesting -- but never proving -- that reform carried great risk to the military and thus to national security.
