HOME AWAY: Westboro Will Picket Joe Paterno's Funeral!

Joe Paterno's death caused, to put it mildly, mixed reactions: The Hollywood Reporter has a roundup, and it includes everything from George HW Bush's glowing remembrance of the Penn State coach to this zinger from a Late Show writer and producer: "Will there be a moment of silence for Joe Paterno, to honor his silence when he discovered children were being attacked?" But the most extreme reaction came, of course, from those paragons of understatement, the Westboro Baptist Church.

Pastor Fred Phelps' daughter, Margie, announced on Twitter yesterday that the church would picket Paterno's funeral, TMZ reports. "'Penn State Penn Rape' rings in Joe Paterno's ears in hell. He partook of sin for fame & fortune. Worth NOTHING to him now. #PicketFuneral," she tweeted. Another gem: "Stop pimping out your kids to raping coaches @CollegeFootball! WBC must picket Paterno funeral."

DISRESPECTFUL: Westboro Announces Steve Jobs Protest— Via iPhone!

Westboro Baptist Church says it will picket Steve Jobs' funeral, but apparently God also hates irony: Leader Margie Phelps announced the protest via a Twitter announcement made on an iPhone. "The irony here is almost unbelievable," notes Josh Wolford on Web Pro News. Jobs' sin? Phelps tweeted that he "had a huge platform; gave God no glory & taught sin." And just under her tweet is the clear statement, "via Twitter for iPhone."

SLUT WALK: Westboro to Protest NYC Fashion Week!

The Westboro Baptist Church is turning its wrath on a new target: New York’s Fashion Week, apparently known to church members as the "Slutwalk extraordinaire." "The whole idea (of the) fashion industry is to make women look as whorish as possible and men look as effeminate as possible," said a rep for Westboro, which has announced plans to protest outside

Lincoln Center's tents tomorrow. "All you are doing is teaching girls to be proud whores." His advice, via the New York Post: "Put some jeans on and fear God." (This strikes a blogger at the Stir as a bit ironic.) Lincoln Center plans to ramp up security over fears that "the fashion crowd could be upset or offended," an insider tells the Post. The fashionistas say they won’t let Westboro, known for its protests at military funerals, push them around. “I would probably attack them if they said anything to me,” says a style journalist. Plus, "if they’re looking homely, they won't fit in," zings a model. Westboro has quite the busy calendar this month: It plans to picket a Foo Fighters concert in Kansas City on Sept. 16, as well as Sunday's New York Jets-Dallas Cowboys game.

HATE SCHOOL: The FBI Invited Westboro Baptist Church to Train its Police Officers and Agents!

The FBI invited Westboro Baptist Church to two of its facilities to help train agents and police officers, NPR reports: Wbc ...the FBI recently invited leaders of the fundamentalist church to the Quantico Marine base in Virginia to talk to FBI agents as part of the bureau's counterterrorism training program. But after four sessions this spring, the FBI canceled the arrangement amid criticism from inside the bureau, while church leaders claimed that they had been misled.

Apparently officers needed training on the kind of hate  the WBC inspires: He said the program was designed to teach agents "how to stay measured when they are speaking with a witness or a suspect with whom they have a strong, visceral disagreement."

HATE for SALE: Pastor to Westboro: Have a Donut While Picketing Us!

After learning that Westboro was planning on picketing his megachurch Sunday, Pastor Mark Driscoll decided to fight fire with ... donuts. Westboro wrote on its website that it decided to target the Seattle-area Mars Hill "to picket the false prophet and blind lemmings at Mars Hill Whore House where they teach the lies that God love [sic] everyone and Jesus died for the sins of all of mankind." So Driscoll also took to the web, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, writing a blog post titled, "Westboro Baptist Church, This False Prophet and His Blind Lemmings Welcome You to Our Whore House for God’s Grace and Free Donuts."

"If you make it," he writes, "we'll give you free copies of my book, Doctrine, so you can learn what the Bible says about who God actually is, and we'll also provide fresh donuts and free coffee, along with smiles and chuckles." Driscoll, however, wouldn't be around to hand out the goodies. "This false prophet will be at his son's baseball tournament, enjoying time with his wife and five kids. Happy Father's Day!"

In other news, Westboro Never SHOWED to the Seattle Pride Picnic!

It's WAR: Westboro Protested by ... the KKK?

Not a surprise: Westboro Baptist Church was doing its thing yesterday, protesting at Arlington National Cemetery hours before President Obama’s Memorial Day observances at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Somewhat more of a surprise: Members of the controversial church were met by a counter-protest … by purported members of the Ku Klux Klan. The Knights of the Southern Cross held a POW-MIA banner and handed out American flags, CNN reports.

"It's the soldier that fought and died and gave them that right to free speech," says the self-described "Imperial Wizard" of the KKK group he says he formed. But the WBC was not impressed: Founder Fred Phelps’ daughter Abigail says, "They have no moral authority on anything. People like them say it's white power ... white supremacy. The Bible doesn't say anywhere that it's an abomination to be born of a certain gender or race."

VICTORY: Illinois Senate Approves Anti-Westboro Bill!

Westboro Baptist Church could soon find itself foiled in Illinois. The state Senate passed a measure yesterday that broadens the protection granted to funerals, requiring any protesters to remain at least 300 feet away from the site rather than the currently required 200 feet. The original House bill, proposed by a sociology class at Northern Illinois University, required a 1,000-foot limit.

The House must accept or reject the revised Senate version of the bill; if it is accepted, it will go to Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk. As lieutenant governor in 2006, Quinn spearheaded an attempt to restrict funeral protests, the Springfield Journal-Register notes. The Illinois branch of the ACLU opposes the measure, with a senior attorney noting that “the First Amendment protects the right to engage in speech in public places that is directed towards whatever audience the speaker chooses,” even if that includes “horrible, offensive messages.”
