(TIME-Warp) Honoring the 53rd Anniversary of Loving Day: The Landmark Supreme court decision that started it all!

Long before the fight for Gay marriage was the fight for  interracial Marriage. The similarities are astonishing.

In June of 1958, Richard Loving married Mildred Jeter in Washington D.C. This was no ordinary marriage because he was white and she was black. In that time, laws in their home state of Virginia forbade interracial marriage, thus the couple was forced to travel to another state to wed.

(TIME-warp): Remembering when Gay Marriage became Legal in New England, 13 years ago this week!

Same-sex marriage is legal or has been legalized in six of the six New England states: Massachusetts became Legal on May 17, 2004, according to Wikipedia. The New England region has been noted for being the nucleus of the same-sex marriage movement in the United States with the region having among the most widespread and earliest legal support of any region. It was followed by three more states between October 2008 and June 2009. This followed Vermont being the first-in-the-nation with civil unions in 2000.

Currently, 36 states and the District of Columbia are the U.S. jurisdictions performing same-sex marriages, and California performed them for five months in mid 2008. DOMA was struck down in 2013.

(MATT BAUME) Marriage Equality Update!

Wow a lot has happened since the last Valentine's Day -- marriage, rainbow White House, the presidential campaigns and a last-minute change on the Supreme Court. Here's what's happened in the last year; and why we might not be celebrating on Valentine's Day 2017.

This week was the Three-year anniversary of Washington’s same-sex marriage law. To mark the occasion, the state Department of Health has released marriage statistics gathered from the date the law took effect — Dec. 6, 2012 — through the end of September, date of most recent available numbers.

In that time, 7,071 gay couples tied the knot. That’s 17 percent of the total 42,408 new marriages, or one out of six.

(MATT BAUME) The Worst Reactions to Marriage Equality!

Same-sex couples are getting married, and somehow the world has not yet ended. But some politicians seem to think that we're just moments away from the collapse of civilization. Here are some of the dumbest -- and most dangerous -- things they're saying.

FINALE! Marriage News is Wrapping Up!

Only a few isolated locations in the country remain where same-sex couples can't get married. Those opposed to equality are getting increasingly desperate, with stall tactics and long-shot legal games. We're also likely to see renewed attacks on other civil rights, so there's still going to be a lot of work to do in order to protect equality. But the story of marriage is changing from something we're fighting to achieve to something we're actually living. That's why as of this week I'm wrapping up Marriage News Watch.

(MNW) Defending our Marriage Victory Won't Be Easy!

Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects marriage for everyone -- including same-sex couples. It is a decision we have been waiting decades for. And now, all our work is, well, actually, not quite done yet. Let's take a look at what the court just decided, and what comes next.

(OUTview Special) 5 years of Marriage Coverage!

We are still celebrating our 5th Anniversary and we have never shied away Gay Marriage News and even traveled to NY in 2011 when Marriage was legal. Here are the Highlights:

(MARRIAGE NEWS SPECIAL) Supreme Court Victory: What You Need to Know!

Here's why the Supreme Court had to uphold the freedom to marry, and what comes next.

The marriage equality ruling is as big a victory as we could possibly have hoped for. Now's a good time for everyone to celebrate -- the ruling is a win-win for everyone. It's not like some couples won and other couples lost. What this decision means is that same-sex couples have the same right to marry as everyone else, and every else's right to marry isn't harmed at all. Everybody wins.

(MNW) Alabama Could End Marriage Licenses for Everyone!

An NBC station in Tennessee is refusing to broadcast footage of a gay soldier who wants to get married. The governor of North Carolina vetoed a bill that would let state officials turn gay couples away from marriage counters -- but the bill's not dead yet. And Alabama is actually going through with a threat to stop issuing marriage licenses state-wide -- but that might not have the effect they want.

(MNW) Laws to Stop Marriage Equality Grow Increasingly Weird!

Texas is pushing a proposed law that would let the state overrule the Supreme Court. There's just one problem: they can't actually do that. Alabama judges have decided that they don't have to obey federal courts either, except that in reality, they do. And Oklahoma politician wants to switch from marriage licenses to marriage certificates, which would accomplish ... not very much.

(MNW) Alabama Goes Rogue on Marriage!

by Matt Baume

The Alabama Supreme Court just went rogue on marriage, and that has George Takei pretty annoyed. Hundreds of Republicans just asked the U.S. Supreme Court to enact full federal equality. And the National Organization for Marriage's losing streak continues with yet another slapdown in court.

(MNW) Texas Gets Things Wrong!

Texas lawmakers are gunning for the judge who let two lesbians to get married. Meanwhile, homophobic lawmakers celebrate the 10th anniversary of the state's marriage ban. There's just one problem: the law will probably be overturned before it actually turns ten. Plus various native American tribes are in the process of legalizing marriage.

(MNW) Things just got even messier in Alabama!

Marriage starts today in Alabama, and the usual suspects are still trying to figure out some way to stop it. Nebraska accidentally passed a bill that will recognize gay and lesbian couples, but only when they're carrying a concealed firearm. And we're on a fast track for rulings in several southern states.

(MNW) Florida Marriage Equality is Still in Jeopardy!

Marriage is starting this week in Florida. So why are our opponents saying it's not? We'll take a look at what's really going on, and how they're still trying to stop the weddings. Also this week: oral argument in Louisiana could get pretty heated. Another Supreme Court conference. And some surprising polling.

(MNW) Florida Ordered to Let Gays Marry in One Month!

Marriage could be coming to Florida sooner than we expected. Plus, after last week's big win, the Mississippi lawsuit is now on the fast track to an appeal. And Kansas just lost their latest attempt to hold back the start of marriage.

(MNW) Kansas Counties Still Refuse to Issue Licenses!

We picked up three states with marriage this week. But in one of those states, some clerks are refusing to issue licenses. Alabama's attorneys are using a discredited anti-gay researcher to build a case for banning marriage. And we have more bad news for what's left of the National Organization for Marriage.

(MNW) A Few Anti-Gay Governors Just Won't Admit Defeat!

The number of states with marriage has gone up yet again this week. Only a handful of states are stil trying to defend their marriage bans, and they're quickly running out of ways to delay their inevitable loss. A straight couple in Kansas has filed a new anti-gay lawsuit, and it's nuts. A federal judge just ruled against the freedom to marry, but his decision has virtually no chance of being upheld. Plus, there's a powerful new lawsuit in Mississippi.

(MNW) Three More States Just Won Marriage Equality!

We just picked up more states with the freedom to marry, and the number could continue increasing over the course of this week. But in several states, officials are blocking the start of marriage despite courts ruling against their bans. We'll have the details on how couples are fighting back. Plus, more bad news for the National Organization for Marriage. This time it's a ruling in Virginia that means they'll lose out on over half a million dollars.

(MNW) Who Has Marriage, Who Doesn't, & What's Next?

Over the last week, states have been winning the freedom to marry at such a fast pace that it's hard to keep up. AFER has conclusively won its marriage case. Cases in four other states have ended in victory. The Ninth Circuit has expanded marriage in several more states. It's been a pretty terrible week for the National Organization for Marriage. But a pretty great one for freedom, liberty, and equality.
