(EDDIE's view) ReCap of RDR Season 5, Week 1!

by Eddie Walker

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season Five has finally arrived, with fourteen queens all fighting to be America’s Next Drag Super Star. And after watching the first episode, I think there’s a strong possibility we may see our first ever plus-size Drag Super Star crowned. But I’ll get to that in a minute.

As is the custom, the first episode opens with the ‘meet & greet’, and ‘controversy & drama’. This season’s big controversy is Alaska (29 - Pittsburgh, PA). Alaska is partners with Season Four winner, Sharon Needles. And in my opinion, Sharon Needles is the only reason she’s a contestant on Season Five. After watching Alaska through this first episode, I can see why the producers never chose her to be a contestant four seasons in a row. It’s no big secret that both Sharon and Alaska are recovering addicts. And it’s obvious that Alaska is heavily medicated. Lithium probably, maybe Xanax, but definitely something. Alaska’s entire demeanor is dry and muted, lacking that sparkle I see in every other girl on the show. Alaska is definitely this season’s ‘mercy’ contestant.

This season’s big drama is between Alyssa Edwards (32 - Mesquite, TX) and Coco Montrese (37 - Las Vegas, NV). They’ve competed against each other in the past, and neither one of them have nothing good to say about the other. No one knows exactly what went down, but I’m sure all will be revealed as the season progresses. That’s if one of them doesn’t ‘sashay away’ first.

For this episode’s mini-challenge, Celebrity Photographer, Mike Ruiz, photographed the girls underwater. Most of the girls looks did not photograph well in the water. And poor Alaska , God bless her heart, could not even bring herself to be submerged long enough to get a decent photo, and refused to complete the challenge. The two girls with the best photos in this challenge were Detox (27 - Los Angeles, CA) and Vivienne Pinay (26 - New York, NY). RuPaul named Detox the winner.

For the main challenge, the girls had to create a ‘Hollywood - Red Carpet’ look for the runway out of materials obtained from a ‘dumpster diving’ trip in Beverly Hills. Detox, Coco Montrese, Alyssa Edwards, Honey Mahogony (29 - San Francisco, CA), Monica Beverly Hillz (27 - Owensboro, KY), Vivienne Pinay, and Jinkx Monsoon (24 - Seattle, WA)were all deemed safe. However, before allowing the girls to leave the stage, RuPaul did let the girls know that ‘safe’ is not cute, suggesting that they try a little bit harder.

Roxxy Andrews (29 - Orlando, FL), Ivy Winters (26 - New York, NY), Alaska, and Lineysha Sparx (24 - San Juan, PR) are all praised for their runway looks. But it’s Roxxy Andrews who’s named the winner of this week’s main challenge, and as she should be. She created a black goddess gown with a shoulder ruffle that had cut-outs on the hips showing just enough flesh to still be regarded as classy yet sexy. But, it wasn’t the dress that made the girl. Roxxy Andrews wore this dress with a confidence that you know was hard won. It was revealed that Roxxy recently lost 70 pounds, but she’s still carrying 190 plus making her not necessarily a big girl, but “thick” as RuPaul calls it. Roxxy is the plus-sized girl I mentioned earlier, and is my top choice to be the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race - Season Five.

Jade Jolie (25 - Gainesville, FL), Serena ChaCha (21 - Tallahassee, FL), and Penny Tration (40 - Cincinnati, OH) were all in the bottom three. If I had to send a girl home on their look alone, it would be Serena ChaCha. The look Serena created made it quite evident that she has never seen the inside of a fashion magazine. Serena ChaCha was put up for elimination, along with Penny Tration appropriately. Penny had the the nerve to come out with lop-sided hips, which I think is as bad as pulling of your wig or taking of your heels, all grounds for immediate dismissal.

Tration was a Hot Mess!
Penny Tration and Serena ChaCha had to ‘lip-sync for their life’ to ‘Party in the USA’ by Miley Cyrus. Penny didn’t know the words, so Serena ChaCha won by default. I think the right girl went home. Penny was chosen by the fans, and sometimes the fans just don’t know what they’re doing.

Next time, leave the contestant choosing to the professionals. We know what we’re doing.
