Well we just capped off the busiest month in marriage equality history, but it's looking like November's going to be just as busy. Two judges in the Sixth Circuit just ruled against equality, which sets us up for a Supreme Court ruling in the coming months. And no sooner did the Sixth Circuit uphold marriage bans than a judge in West Virginia issued a ruling of his own, explaining why they're wrong. Plus, judges overturned marriage bans in Kansas and Missouri, with some complicated rules about who can get married and when.

(MY VIEW) The Joys of Being Queer!
by Richard Lyon
When I was growing up in a small town in Alabama in the 1950s, the only word ever used for something that might be called same-sex attraction or homosexuality was "queer." Of course, it always carried a very negative and hateful connotation. I can still remember cringing at the thought that it was probably I whom they were talking about. Just as other people have come to embrace negative slang like "dyke" and "faggot" to throw the words back, I have learned to embrace "queer." That definitely takes the sting out of those memories.

(MY view) The Other Side of Forty!
by Robert Levithan
Bob Bergeron committed suicide at 49 -- just before the planned publication of his book, The Right Side of Forty. His suicide note, written on the title page, included this phrase about the book: "It's a lie based on bad information." Perhaps understandably, the publisher cancelled the book's release. So I can't judge the work that Bergeron lost faith in.
Presumably, Bergeron's mission in writing the book was to help spur a healthier outlook on aging for gay men. His disillusionment and suicide send the exact opposite message. However sad his choice might make us, we must not allow it to reinforce an outdated message of hopelessness regarding aging. If aging is a failure, then we all fail.
The colleagues and friends who encouraged me to write about this incident and its implications for gay men hope that I can present an argument that Bergeron was wrong, that both sides of 40 are viable, that as we age, the gains outweigh the losses.

BARE FACTS: City Councilman Under Fire for Having Adam4Adam Account!
Before you get the idea that he's a hypocrite, city councilman Karl Baker, of Desert Hot Springs, California, is openly gay. This is not a sighting of the Homo Republicanus. In fact, the 70-year-old's only sin was to have a profile on Adam4Adam, and to use a shot of himself on the city council as his profile pic.
There was also a nude, mydesert.com reports: Until Thursday, a Desert Hot Springs city councilman used a photo of himself taken during a City Council meeting as part of his profile on a website where members solicit openly for sex.

HEALTH: STDs Soar Among Seniors!
Maybe it’s longer lives; maybe it’s Viagra (Too many young lovers on the side?). Either way, STDs are soaring among seniors—and climbing faster among older adults than within the population as a whole. Reportings of syphilis and chlamydia among those 55 and older jumped 43% between 2005 and 2009, the Orlando Sentinel finds in a study of CDC data. Syphilis climbed faster than the national average among those 55 to 64: Older adults saw a 70% rise in reported cases, 10 percentage points higher than the average for all age groups.
Meanwhile, chlamydia rose some 54% among seniors, twice the all-ages average. Why the spike? It may be because senior generations didn’t have the safe-sex training younger generations received, resulting in less condom use. It could also be that more seniors are living in retirement communities—potential social hotspots. The data has prompted Medicare to mull covering seniors’ STD screenings, as well as perhaps providing behavioral counseling for sexually-active seniors.
