(MATT BAUME) Marriage Equality Update!

Wow a lot has happened since the last Valentine's Day -- marriage, rainbow White House, the presidential campaigns and a last-minute change on the Supreme Court. Here's what's happened in the last year; and why we might not be celebrating on Valentine's Day 2017.

FINALE! Marriage News is Wrapping Up!

Only a few isolated locations in the country remain where same-sex couples can't get married. Those opposed to equality are getting increasingly desperate, with stall tactics and long-shot legal games. We're also likely to see renewed attacks on other civil rights, so there's still going to be a lot of work to do in order to protect equality. But the story of marriage is changing from something we're fighting to achieve to something we're actually living. That's why as of this week I'm wrapping up Marriage News Watch.

(MNW) Defending our Marriage Victory Won't Be Easy!

Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects marriage for everyone -- including same-sex couples. It is a decision we have been waiting decades for. And now, all our work is, well, actually, not quite done yet. Let's take a look at what the court just decided, and what comes next.

(MARRIAGE NEWS SPECIAL) Supreme Court Victory: What You Need to Know!

Here's why the Supreme Court had to uphold the freedom to marry, and what comes next.

The marriage equality ruling is as big a victory as we could possibly have hoped for. Now's a good time for everyone to celebrate -- the ruling is a win-win for everyone. It's not like some couples won and other couples lost. What this decision means is that same-sex couples have the same right to marry as everyone else, and every else's right to marry isn't harmed at all. Everybody wins.

(MNW) The Craziest Parts of NOM's Marriage Pledge!

We're down to the last few days before the Supreme Court rules on marriage. In the mean time, the National Organization for Marriage is asking all of the GOP presidential candidates to sign an anti-equality pledge. Let's take a look at just how crazy this pledge gets.

(MNW) North Carolina Next State to Pass "Turn Away the Gays"!

A bill to allow North Carolina officials to refuse to serve any couple they don't like is several steps closer to passing, even after the governor vetoed it. Texas is coming up with new excuses for refusing to issue marriage licenses. And with a federal ruling on marriage due any day now, Judge Roy Moore continues to speak out against the Supreme Court.

(MNW) Alabama Could End Marriage Licenses for Everyone!

An NBC station in Tennessee is refusing to broadcast footage of a gay soldier who wants to get married. The governor of North Carolina vetoed a bill that would let state officials turn gay couples away from marriage counters -- but the bill's not dead yet. And Alabama is actually going through with a threat to stop issuing marriage licenses state-wide -- but that might not have the effect they want.

(MNW) Jail Time for Pro-Equality Minister!

Alabama has sent a minister to jail for 30 days for defying a local judge and marrying a lesbian couple. Irish voters support marriage equality in a landslide, but marriage could still start in America before they start in Ireland. And one more study shows support for equality on the rise.

(MNW) Texas vs. Supreme Court!

Texas is setting itself up for a showdown with the Supreme Court. A bill to defy the court's rulings died in the House last week, but anti-gay politicians could find a sneaky way to revive it. Meanwhile, the Attorney General of Texas refuses to say if he'll obey the Supreme Court's ruling in June.

(MNW) Texas Planning to Defy Supreme Court Marriage Ruling!

Texas lawmakers vote this week on whether the state should officially defy the Supreme Court's ruling on marriage. Alabama and Minnesota are debating bills to undermine marriage equality. At least one presidential candidate seems to think that if elected he could veto the Supreme Court. But a new survey shows that Americans are getting tired of these anti-gay shenanigans.

(MNW) Supreme Court Marriage Predictions!

Oral argument is done, and now we can make a few predictions about how the Supreme Court might rule in June. Texas lawmakers have a plan to stop marriage equality, and they don't seem to care that their plan isn't actually legal. And the National Organization for Marriage is insisting that they'll still exist a year from now.

(FIRESIDE CHAT w/ Matt Baume) Top Supreme Court Arguments For & Against Marriage!

What is the Supreme Court thinking about marriage? They just heard oral argument from gay couples, from the states that want to preserve their bans, and from the US Government. And we can make a couple guesses about what's going through their heads.

(MNW) Anti-Gay Supreme Court Briefs Are a Huge Mess!

I've rounded up the weirdest Supreme Court briefs that argue in favor of preventing gays and lesbians from marrying. Some are full of mistakes, others have baffling arguments. And at least one is incredibly sexist, and signed by a member of Congress.

(MNW) NOM Clueless Before US Supreme Court!

We have more details about the Supreme Court arguments at the end of the month. The National Organization for Marriage has fumbled yet another brief. And two public officials are suing for the right to discriminate.

(MNW) The Four Worst Supreme Court Arguments on Marriage!

Michigan says that they don't want to let gay people get married because that would be demeaning to gay people. Kentucky says that their marriage ban isn't discriminatory, since LGBTs are free to get straight-married. Ohio wants to maintain its marriage ban out of concern for the people who voted for it. And Tennessee is just fixated on sex.

(MNW) Texas Still Using DOMA to Attack Gay Couples!

Texas has won the right to have gays and lesbians fired for taking medical leave. The state's also working on a sneaky work-around to stop marriage equality, just in case the Supreme Court overturns the state's ban. And Alabama officials says that maybe gays and lesbians don't want to get married after all.

(MNW) Texas Sues to Stop Gays From Taking Family Leave!

It's been nearly two months since marriage was supposed to start in Alabama, and the state still doesn't have its act together. Texas just filed a lawsuit to prevent gays and lesbians from taking family medical leave. And it's going to take at least five different bills to overturn Michigan's marriage ban.

(MNW) Laws to Stop Marriage Equality Grow Increasingly Weird!

Texas is pushing a proposed law that would let the state overrule the Supreme Court. There's just one problem: they can't actually do that. Alabama judges have decided that they don't have to obey federal courts either, except that in reality, they do. And Oklahoma politician wants to switch from marriage licenses to marriage certificates, which would accomplish ... not very much.

(MNW) Alabama Goes Rogue on Marriage!

by Matt Baume

The Alabama Supreme Court just went rogue on marriage, and that has George Takei pretty annoyed. Hundreds of Republicans just asked the U.S. Supreme Court to enact full federal equality. And the National Organization for Marriage's losing streak continues with yet another slapdown in court.

(MNW) Texas Gets Things Wrong!

Texas lawmakers are gunning for the judge who let two lesbians to get married. Meanwhile, homophobic lawmakers celebrate the 10th anniversary of the state's marriage ban.
