(MATT BAUME) The Horrible History of Ex-Gay Cures!

Did you know people have tried to cure homosexuality with forced cuddling, horse stroking, and monkey testicles? Let's take a disturbing tour of the last hundred years of insane ex-gay cures, some of which are still being practiced by quacks to this day.

(MY View) What Went Wrong for the 'Ex-Gays' in New Jersey?

by Wayne Besen

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, signed a bill into law this week that bans quacks from practicing a discredited form of "therapy" on minors that seeks to turn them from gay to straight. New Jersey is now the second state in the nation, the first being California, to pass such a law. Massachusetts may become the third, with the legislature's Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons With Disabilities having held a hearing on the issue in July.

(MY VIEW) Exodus Is Gone, But the 'Ex-Gay' Message Stubbornly Persists!

by  Wayne Besen

This Week, we bear witness to history. Exodus International -- the world's largest "ex-gay" program -- announced that it is shutting its doors and shuttering its windows. It is no longer promising desperate and vulnerable people that they can "pray away the gay." It is no longer peddling snake oil called reparative therapy. It has ceased destroying families in the name of family values.

This stunning voyage began a year and a half ago. At the Gay Christian Network conference in Orlando, Florida, Alan Chambers, the President of Exodus International, stepped on stage and did something revolutionary. He looked the crowd in the eyes and he told the truth. Chambers said that 99.9 percent of his clients had not changed their sexual orientation.

BITCH SLAP: Marcus Bachmann Announces His Anti-Gay 'First Spouse' Agenda!

Marcus Bachmann told the NYT what his agenda would be should his wife be elected President: “I’ve decided my cause is not going to be happy meals,” he said during a stop at the Family Table Restaurant here, apparently a dig at Mrs. Obama.

“We are going to be the message-givers,” said Mr. Bachmann, who runs a Christian counseling service that has been accused of trying to “heal” gays by persuading them to become heterosexual.

“We are going to get this message across,” he said. “Marriage is between one man and one woman. We are going to promote families.”

STILL GAY: Marcus Bachmann Decides He Doesn't Want a Public Battle Over Fees for Unused 'Ex-Gay' Therapy Sessions!

You may recall that back in July, John Becker, from Truth Wins Out, a group that works to expose the "ex-gay" movement, paid an undercover visit to Marcus Bachmann for a set of "pray away the gay" therapy sessions which he then wrote up to apply pressure to the Bachmanns for accepting public funds for this discredited and damaging practice.
Marcus_bachmannYou may also recall that in November, Bachmann began demanding payment for the sessions that Becker didn't use.

Bachmann has decided to let it all drop, which disappoints Truth Win Out's Wayne Besen: “The last thing we expected was for Marcus Bachmann to behave rationally and abandon his specious and spiteful claim that we owed him money. It is a shame that he wasn’t foolish enough to allow a $150 billing dispute to turn into free publicity that highlighted the harm caused by ‘ex-gay’ programs.”

(SOAP Q) Thom Bierdz' New INTER-view with LGBTsr.com!

By Rick Rose
LGBTsr.com

Thom Bierdz and I have much in common, and we share those traits with Michael Fairman who I interviewed here at www.lgbtSr.com not too long ago. We three amigos have worked in the world of soap operas for years, we each hail from Wisconsin, and we are all proudly-out parts of the LGBT community

Catching up with Thom and slowing him down enough for an interview may seem tough (you will see he is one busy guy), but Thom was right on top of this interview, and we appreciate his time with lgbtSr.

(the GAY SEXpert) Common Features of Religious Abuse (and the Ex-Gay Movement)

by Jallen Rix, PH.D

The most important discovery I made in my research* and understanding of my recovery process from my ex-gay experience had to do with the way “ministries” like this function. Briefly put, it is nothing new. In fact, the movement is a microcosm of a larger, more rampant problem today — religious abuse.

I had a suspicion that the ex-gay movement might have some commonalities with religious abuse and dependency, but I had no idea just how similar they were. As I began to read about religious abuse, I would often blink my eyes and glance at the title of the book to make sure I wasn’t reading a book exclusively about the ex-gay movement. It seemed that what was described as a structured kind of power abuse within a given church, was describing point for point any number of ex-gay groups. Whole chapters of religious abuse books could apply perfectly to what has occurred in the ex-gay environment — really!

CURED: Ex-Gay' Brazilian Leader Comes Out, Says 'Ex-Gays' Don't Exist!

John Aravosis at Americablog Gay points us to this interview with Brazilian 'Ex-gay' leader Sergio Viula, "one of the founders of the Movement for the Healthy Sexuality (MOSES), an evangelical NGO which helps people interested in quitting homosexuality," who tells Brazilian site The Flying Teapot Project that he's gay and 'ex-gay' groups are a complete farce: ViulaIn fact, ex-gays don’t exist – it’s pure self-suggestion. I started going to church and noticed that homosexuals didn’t know how to deal with their ‘difficulties’, due to lack of orientation by their leaders, so I decided to found the Movement for the Healthy Sexuality (MOSES), with João Luiz Santolin and Liane França. That was when I started saying – at very opportune moments – that I was ex-gay.
Today I know that I was deceiving myself. But back then, I thought that every sentiment or attraction was a mere case of ‘temptation’ and that it could be overcome with prayer and dedication to god. In the group, we used to think, basically speaking, that being gay was a sin, which should be confessed and abandoned and, therefore, we would proselytize, counsel, pray, preach, recommend certain books, read the Bible – things that believers usually do, but focusing on homosexuality itself; unfortunately, always demonizing homogenic love.

SORDID: Linda Wall, 'Ex-Gay' Candidate in Virginia, Admits Lesbian Affair with Minor

Linda Wall, a conservative independent running for Virginia's House of Delegates who has lobbied Virginia's General Assembly on behalf of the Family Foundation, a group that opposes same-sex marriage, gay adoption, and abortion, says she's an "ex-gay" and admits to having had sexual relations with an underage student that cost her a job forty years ago, the AP reports: WallIn an Associated Press interview on Wednesday, Linda Wall confirmed her sworn 2006 testimony in a lawsuit in which she admitted to "sexual relations with a minor" in the early 1970s when she taught physical education in Prince George County. The 61-year-old Wall said the affair was a long-ago, youthful mistake, not who she is now.

"I've never tried to hide that I was in homosexuality. If anybody Googles me, they would find that out there," Wall said.

"Forty years ago I was a different person. I was a heavy pot smoker with … impaired judgment and made some bad choices," she said. "You do that out of college sometimes. Some people do, some people don't."

MISGUIDED: Michele Bachmann Says She Doesn't Hold Herself Above Gay People, But.....

Bachmann_bornthiswayMichele and Marcus Bachmann talk to People magazine about their positions on gay people, the HuffPost reports: In the Oct. 31 issue of People, the couple defended themselves against accusations of harboring an anti-gay bias. "There's never been a bias," Marcus Bachmann said. "I'm no better than anyone else," Michele added.

People also talked to Michele Bachmann's gay stepsister, Helen LaFave, who Bachmann said she loved. LaFave said, "Yes, we are family and love each other, but she seems to have a disconnect. Her statements and actions related to gay rights are very hurtful, whether she understands that or not." Their once-close relationship reportedly strained over Bachmann's anti-gay activism.

GO GAY: These Two Kids Should Be Dating, Instead They're in a Horrifying 'Pray Away the Gay' Video!

Ex-gaystudents
I came across a new web video from 'White Throne Films' which stars Bobby Blakey, "a High School Pastor with a passion to help young people follow Christ with a love for God and his word" and two kids who reveal they thought they were gay but then found God, and apparently Blakey.

Blakey's now using them to spread his damaging message that kids can "pray away the gay".

Asserts Blakey: "If you don't accept homosexuality, you're not in with what's happening today....In high school classrooms homosexuality is being aggressively promoted."

SO-CALLED EXPERT: People Choose to Be Gay according to Cain!

Herman Cain hit on some hot-button social issues in his interview with Piers Morgan last night, including homosexuality and abortion. In one exchange transcribed by Politico, Cain says that “because of my biblical beliefs” he thinks being gay is “a personal choice,” challenging Morgan to show him scientific evidence to the contrary. Morgan counters that it would be like a gay person telling Cain he chose to be black.

“Piers, Piers,” Cain replies, “This doesn’t wash off. I hate to burst your bubble.” Cain also held forth on abortion, USA Today reports, saying he believed in "abortion under no circumstance." Morgan asked if “no circumstances” included cases of rape and incest, and Cain seemed to imply that it did—but then he added that “it’s not the government’s role to make that decision. … It ultimately gets down to a choice that that family or that mother has to make.” He later added: “I can have an opinion without it being a directive on the nation.” Which, New York points out, means “Cain might actually be pro-choice and not know it.”

NOT CURED: Former 'Ex-Gay' Activist John Smid Tells Chris Matthews He's Gay!

Smid
Former Exodus International leader John Smid, his acknowledged that he is gay, and his remarks that homosexuality is unchangeable:
"One cannot repent of something that is unchangeable. I have gone through a tremendous amount of grief over the many years that I spoke of change, repentance, reorientation and such, when, barring some kind of miracle, none of this can occur with homosexuality."

Smid took his story to Chris Matthews last night and talked about "ex-gay" thera[y, the Bachmann clinic, and Marcus Bachmann's statements about "barbarians [needing] to be disciplined".

Said Smid: "I think that's horrific and an amazing denial of human experience."
Smid and Michelle Goldberg from the Daily Beast then go on to discuss why GOP candidates glom on to the "gay is a choice" meme.

SHOCKER: Father Allegedly Tortured Son to Make Him Straight!

Picture 18
A college student says his father tortured him after he came out at age 12. Pink News reports: Samuel Brinton, a student at Kansas State University, said his Southern Baptist missionary father beat him, burned him and shocked him with electric currents.

He said his family, who lived on a missionary base in Iowa, first realised he was gay at the age of 12, when he told his father that he felt more strongly about his male best friend than models in Playboy magazine.
According to Brinton, his father told him that he had AIDS and that the government was hunting down gay children. Then he allegedly subjected his son to homemade conversion therapy. It was unimaginably brutal: He said he was beaten badly by his father to the point of being hospitalised six times, although doctors were told that he had fallen down the stairs.

CURED: Michele Bachmann's Friend Claims She's No Longer a Lesbian!

Boynes Janet Boynes used to be a lesbian. No longer! She's over that now. The before-and-after pictures prove it. And she's helping others get over their homosexuality at Janet Boynes Ministries.

Interviewed on a radio show, Boynes was more than happy to talk about her past drug and alcohol addictions, her failed engagement to a man, and her painful experiences with rape. But don't ask her if she's friends with Michele and Marcus Bachmann - because that's personal.

BOO: Michele Bachmann Spooked by Gay Protesters at Iowa Pumpkin Farm!

Michele Bachmann attended a fundraiser thrown by Iowa's leading anti-gay group The Family Leader at a pumpkin farm in Iowa last night, but canceled her scheduled speech outside the barn because of 60 protesters that had shown up from Iowa's Grinnell College, CBS News reports:Grinnell The students joined the crowd in the barn waiting for Bachmann to speak, while the lawmaker's staff huddled, apparently concerned about the protestors, who carried signs saying, "Have my gaybies" and "My body, my choice" and "Female Gay Student 99%, where's my future?" The police arrived and cordoned off an area outside the barn where the Grinnell students were made to stand.

An hour and a half after the event was scheduled to begin, Bachmann came out of the nearby house, took a quick tour of the farm, fed some goats and fielded a couple questions from reporters about why her speech was canceled. She said the event was supposed to be private and that she wanted to be able to talk with the people who had paid to be part of the $25-a-head fundraiser.

Bachmann then walked to a van, waving to the students as some of them yelled to her.

DUH: Herman Cain Says Being Gay is a Choice and Wants to See the Science That Proves Otherwise

Cain_choice
Herman Cain, frontrunner in many of the latest GOP 2012 straw polls, was asked by Joy Behar Tuesday morning how he could think being gay is a choice when so many people are vilified for it.
Said Cain: "You show me the science that says that it's not. Could be persuaded. Right now it's my opinion against the opinion of others who feel differently. That's just a difference of opinion."

Cain went on to add that he wouldn't allow his personal opinions to get in the way of running the country, and also repeated his intention to reinstate 'DADT'.
