OVTV: (TIME Warp) 46 Years ago, When Original Gay Rebel, Sal Mineo, Risked his career and Life!

On February 12, 1976, OUT Actor Sal Mineo is stabbed to death in Hollywood, California. Mineo was parking his car behind his apartment when neighbors heard his cries for help. Some described a white man with brown hair fleeing the scene. By the time they reached Mineo, he was almost dead from a deep wound to his chest. He died minutes later, as detailed in Michael Michaud's Book, Sal and James Franco's film adaption of the same name.

Sal Mineo was a famous teen actor in the 1950s. He co-starred with James Dean in both Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. The transition to adult roles did not come easily for Mineo, but he later appeared in films such as The Longest Day and Escape From the Planet of the Apes, and consistently performed guest spots on television series. On the night he was killed, Mineo was returning from rehearsing for a play.

(TIME-warp): Remembering The Gay March on Washington on its 27th Anniversary!

The March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation was a large political rally that took place in Washington, D.C. on April 25, 1993. Organizers estimated 1,000,000 attended the March, but the National Park Service estimated attendance at 300,000, details Wikipedia.

In the days surrounding the March, a wide range of events serving different subsets of the LGBT community were held throughout Washington, DC. These included historical exhibits, religious services, lobbying events, social gatherings, art exhibits, political workshops, public service events and candlelight vigils.

Speakers and performers at the rally following the march included Col. Grethe Cammermeyer, Judith Light, Melissa Etheridge, RuPaul, Martina Navratilova, Sir Ian McKellen, Eartha Kitt, Lani Ka'ahumanu, and Urvashi Vaid.

(Time Warp): Elizabeth Taylor, the AIDS and LGBT Activist YEARS!

The extraordinary life of Elizabeth Taylor was, of course, dominated by a legendary movie career that brought her enormous fame at a very young age.


She won Oscars and made classic films that we will love forever. But it was her second act that I believe is her greatest legacy. She was in her early 50s when she became an AIDS activist (co-founder of AmFAR) and it was her most important role for the rest of her life.

(TIME-warp): Remembering when Gay Marriage became Legal in New England, 13 years ago this week!

Same-sex marriage is legal or has been legalized in six of the six New England states: Massachusetts became Legal on May 17, 2004, according to Wikipedia. The New England region has been noted for being the nucleus of the same-sex marriage movement in the United States with the region having among the most widespread and earliest legal support of any region. It was followed by three more states between October 2008 and June 2009. This followed Vermont being the first-in-the-nation with civil unions in 2000.

Currently, 36 states and the District of Columbia are the U.S. jurisdictions performing same-sex marriages, and California performed them for five months in mid 2008. DOMA was struck down in 2013.

What's the REAL reason for "bathroom bans"? Those are laws that prevent transgender people from using the bathroom unless it matches their birth certificate. The politicians pushing them claim that they just want to protect people. And they're right -- stopping trans people from using the bathroom will protect people. But not the people they say.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects marriage for everyone -- including same-sex couples. It is a decision we have been waiting decades for. And now, all our work is, well, actually, not quite done yet. Let's take a look at what the court just decided, and what comes next.

A bill to allow North Carolina officials to refuse to serve any couple they don't like is several steps closer to passing, even after the governor vetoed it. Texas is coming up with new excuses for refusing to issue marriage licenses. And with a federal ruling on marriage due any day now, Judge Roy Moore continues to speak out against the Supreme Court.

(MNW) Alabama Could End Marriage Licenses for Everyone!

An NBC station in Tennessee is refusing to broadcast footage of a gay soldier who wants to get married. The governor of North Carolina vetoed a bill that would let state officials turn gay couples away from marriage counters -- but the bill's not dead yet. And Alabama is actually going through with a threat to stop issuing marriage licenses state-wide -- but that might not have the effect they want.

(MNW) Jail Time for Pro-Equality Minister!

Alabama has sent a minister to jail for 30 days for defying a local judge and marrying a lesbian couple. Irish voters support marriage equality in a landslide, but marriage could still start in America before they start in Ireland. And one more study shows support for equality on the rise.

(MNW) Texas vs. Supreme Court!

Texas is setting itself up for a showdown with the Supreme Court. A bill to defy the court's rulings died in the House last week, but anti-gay politicians could find a sneaky way to revive it. Meanwhile, the Attorney General of Texas refuses to say if he'll obey the Supreme Court's ruling in June.

(MNW) Texas Planning to Defy Supreme Court Marriage Ruling!

Texas lawmakers vote this week on whether the state should officially defy the Supreme Court's ruling on marriage. Alabama and Minnesota are debating bills to undermine marriage equality. At least one presidential candidate seems to think that if elected he could veto the Supreme Court. But a new survey shows that Americans are getting tired of these anti-gay shenanigans.

(MNW) Supreme Court Marriage Predictions!

Oral argument is done, and now we can make a few predictions about how the Supreme Court might rule in June. Texas lawmakers have a plan to stop marriage equality, and they don't seem to care that their plan isn't actually legal. And the National Organization for Marriage is insisting that they'll still exist a year from now.

• The White House backs bans on anti-gay “conversion therapy.”
• The US military has its first open transgender service member but is not treating him as a man.
• Hillary Clinton’s video announcing her candidacy features a gay couple and a lesbian couple, but what exactly is her stand on same-sex marriage? (Since taping: “Hillary Clinton supports marriage equality and hopes the Supreme Court will come down on the side of same-sex couples being guaranteed that constitutional right," her spokesperson said.)
• Republican candidates for president twist themselves into knots justifying their opposition to same-sex marriage.

• Controversy over Michigan Womyn’s Festival exclusion of trans women heats up.

• Springfield, Missouri voters repeal an LGBT antidiscrimination law.
• The "fixes" to the bad laws in Indiana and Arkansas are not so great.
• The Mormon Church is still railing against same-sex marriage and our "counterfeit lifestyles."
• ore bad bills advancing in Louisiana, Florida and Texas.
• The good news is that bad bills have died (for the moment) in Georgia and Nevada.
• A lesbian couple in Guam is the first to apply for a marriage license there.
• Ireland approves adoption by same-sex couples, before the referendum on same-sex marriage on May 22nd.
• The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is accused by three ex-employees of defrauding the government of $20 million.
