(JESSE on the BRINK) A Confederacy of Dunces!

by Jesse Archer

You know one of those books that's always on the periphery, that you've heard recommended but never quite got round to picking it up? A Confederacy of Dunces finally landed in my lap - and at first I wished it hadn't! I wasn't jibing with the humor, it felt alien, and the protagonist, Ignatius J Reilly, is utterly repulsive. He's the definitive anti-hero: a gluttonous, massive, lazy, deluded, pompous, unemployed 30-year old who lives with his mother (who he mistreats).

Yet when given an opportunity to reveal itself, the alien can expose you to a fascinating new worldview. So it was with Ignatius and this book. His mother forces him to get a job, and as Ignatious goes through a series of misadventures in employment, staging abortive coups, revolutions, belching, writing manifestos and railing against the machine, society, manners, decency (you can see why I'm liking this), even his anarchist, absent girlfriend Myrna Minkoff (the Minx), and most of all his mother Irene. He's constantly complaining about his "valve", the latest hideous offense "Fortuna" has wrought upon him, brandishing a cutlass and enlisting a calvacade of characters to his cause - my favorite being half-wit elderly Miss Trixie, who calls him Gloria. More than anything, Ignatius is written with deft, scathing, ultimately wholesome innocent humor. There never was a book like this.

DLB was an angel       /MKS
by MK Scott

Up until a few years ago, Portland never hosted an Annual HRC Gala. This evening was always celebrated at the Pacific NW Dinner in Seattle, and Portland members came to that one. Now Portland has one and hosted its 4th Annual Gala this past Saturday in the Gardens of Lewis and Clark College. With over 600 attendees, the gala was the place to be on  a Hot summer night. The atmosphere felt like a wedding as attendees wore summer business casual compare to the regular Black tie style.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Artswest's Production of CHESS; Super Cray Cray!

JEALOUS?      /AWPG
by MK Scott

It was 1986 when I first heard about a HIT Rock musical from London called "Chess" and my High School Drama Department went 'Chess Crazy', similar to the 'Rent' Craze of the 90's and the 'Spring Awakening' Craze of the 2000's. With Chess it had a hit song, Murray Head's 'One Night in Bangkok' playing on the radio and MTV on a regular basis. My classmates were passing Cassette tapes of the soundtrack and My High School Choir performed Selections from Chess during the Winter 1987 concert with staging, lighting, choreography, and black or white T-shirts. Fast Forward 26 Years later as I saw a fully staged production at Seattle's Artswest Playhouse this past Friday.

w/ Matt Baume

Marriage equality is the law of the land throughout California, with at least one county setting a marriage license record. And marriage equality spreads to England, Wales and Colombia.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Season 12's American Idol LIVE was more Ensemble than DIVA!

The Girls back Candace, as she did for them   /MKS
by MK Scott

For the 5th year in a row,  I was there covering the IDOL Live Stop in the Seattle area. (My annual interviews have been postponed until Possible Fall or Winter) Last Friday, I attended the concert, which was the first show on the tour. The Venue selection was downsized from 2 years (2010, 2012) at the Key, 1 Year (2011) at Comcast in Everett, and the 1 Year (2009) at the Tacoma Dome (Adam Lambert's Year). This year was in all places Kent, WA (Season 10's Stefano Langone's Hometown) at the Showare Center. There were plenty of empty seats, and which also happened to be the same night as Paul McCartney at Safeco field. But of course since it have been 2 Months (May 16th was the Finale) since the  Idol Top 10 have been in the limelight. The advertising for the show was pretty minimal, but once again Idol must reinvent itself next season.

(SHOWcase) Rocketmen, the Webseries!

Part drama and discussion of “jobs programs,” part comedy and certainly a deranged adventure, Rocketmen is a web serial featuring a host of Seattle performers, with animated interludes by Animator/Director Webster Crowell. Rocketmen were intended to combat the threats of tomorrow. If those threats never arrive, what purpose will they serve? Who do they save now? Rocketmen want to know: are you in peril?

The Rocketmen are a fraction of a splinter in the body of the Federal Budget. The contemporary remains of a WPA jobs program, the Department of Municipal Rocketry employs men (who are maybe not employable anywhere else) to wear hydrogen-fueled rocket packs and spend their days on city rooftops, awaiting any peril that might befall the city. There is a lot of waiting. In the old days, there was the threat of Russians to battle and 50-foot robots to contend with. Now, they rescue cats, detain illegal skywriters, and start the occasional roof fire. Some of these Rocketmen haven’t flown since their training session. Mostly, they kill time waiting for the emergency phone to ring, which never happens. Until one day, when it rings.

(TIME WARP): AIDS, The plague years-1981-91!

June 1991
If you are of an older generation, and especially a gay man, you probably remember reading or hearing about a July 3, 1981, New York Times article reporting on a strange series of illnesses striking gay men in East Coast and West Coast urban areas. Just 12 years after the Stonewall riots in New York, the decade of love and liberation had come to a crashing end.

There were some signs of distress earlier than 1981. Doctors and nurses, especially those with many gay patients, began to notice obscure illnesses cropping up. Gay health groups did screenings for venereal diseases, which were spreading rapidly.

But it was the summer of 1981 when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report ( MMWR, June 5 and July 3 ) first reported that a new disease might be in our midst. It could have been around for years, but was just at that time starting to exhibit itself.

(Marriage News Watch) Prop 8 Victory! Here's What's Next!

w/ Matt Baume

Well, that's it: we won. It's impossible to overstate how monumental it is that Prop 8 is gone. Couples are getting married in the most populous state in the country. And nearly one third of Americans live in states with the freedom to marry.

So now let's take a look at what comes next.

(UPDATE) Happy Ending for Judy and Karin!

Back in 2011, I had the opportunity to interview the Author of 'Torn Apart, United by Love, Dividedby Law', Judy Rickard. OUTview is thrilled to announce that her Spouse, Karin, has been federally recognized as Judy's Legal wife and was granted her a Green Card, this past weekend.

From PRESS RELEASE
On July 15, 2013, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a green card to U.K. citizen, Karin Bogliolo, 72, based on her marriage to U.S. citizen
Judy Rickard, 65, making Karin the third gay immigrant in U.S. history to become a lawful permanent resident on the basis of a same-sex marriage.

“The issuance of this green card to Karin Bogliolo is the culmination of a two-decade grassroots movement in which lesbian and gay Americans fought for the right to sponsor the person that they love for permanent resident status in the United States, said Lavi Soloway, founder of the DOMA Project. "Lesbian and gay binational couples and their families celebrated the Fourth of
July this year with the Supreme Court decision in US v. Windsor fresh in their
minds: having achieved freedom from a cruel law that has torn apart loving,
committed couples, forced lesbian and gay Americans into exile to be with the
person they love and has resulted in the unconscionable deportation of partners
and spouses of lesbian and gay Americans. The long nightmare is over.
In striking down DOMA, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy held that,
‘[DOMA] tells those couples, and all the world, that their otherwise valid
marriages are unworthy of federal recognition. This places same-sex couples in
an unstable position of being in a second-tier marriage... And it humiliates tens
of thousands of children now being raised by same-sex couples. The law in
question makes it even more difficult for the children to understand the integrity
and closeness of their own family and its concord with other families in their
community and in their daily lives. By issuing a green card to Karin on the basis of her marriage to Judy, the U.S. government is finally recognizing the inherent Dignity of this family, and giving tangible meaning to Justice Kennedy’s ruling.”

(TRIBUTE) Cory Monteith Dead At 31: His Best Glee Performances!

Via Homorazzi

The 31-year-old actor was found dead on Saturday at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in downtown Vancouver. Monteith checked in to the hotel on July 6, but missed his noon checkout time on Saturday. Staff discovered his body in his room on the 21st floor later in the day. No foul play is suspected, and no cause of death has been given. An autopsy on Monteith’s body is scheduled for Monday. It’s well documented that Cory had struggled with drug use. At the age of 19 he did a stint in rehab and just this past spring was back at a treatment facility.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.” – Glee producers, FOX & 20th Century Fox

(ASK MISTY): in Love with Str8 frat brother!

Hi Misty, I need advice, not sure what to do. I am openly gay in my fraternity, never had straight friends.. became really close best friends with one of my brothers who is straight and has a girlfriend. Never thought anything of it, until someone pointed out that it looks like i am in love with him. And after stepping back and analysing my situation, i am deeply in love with this guy. i just love every moment i am with him, flaws and all. I am sure he knows i like him because its obvious (then again he is kind of stupid and doesn’t realize things in front of him) I dont know what to do, i want to be with him , but i doubt anything can happen, although he leads me on sometimes, like he doesn’t tell me to stop when i tell him he's my husband or silly things like that. we’ve had arguments where i really just try and stop talking to him, but i cant live without him, and everyone knows that me and him are really close... What do you think Misty? Sincerely, PinkCottonCandy

(MY View) A Precedent Is a Precedent... Until It's Not!

by Derek Penwell, (Author; Editor; Speaker; Activist)

Society’s attitudes toward sexual orientation and gender identity are changing. Inexorably. And even though there’s a historical precedent in Christianity opposing the affirmation of LGBT people, the prospect of such a change shouldn’t trouble Christians. A precedent is a precedent … until it isn’t.

Here’s what I’d like to propose: In Christianity, truth is whatever Christians decline to argue about at any moment.

Stop howling for a moment, and think about it. Such a claim is merely a more rhetorically interesting way of saying:

“I used to think that, but I don’t anymore.”

(JESSE on the BRINK) The Outbreak!

by Jesse Archer

The meningitis outbreak that has hit the gay community and killed a friend and co-star of mine, Kyle Spidle, is not even a sexually-transmitted disease. That's not how it's listed. It can be caught from kissing, or sharing a drink and it kills within days.

Lawrence Ferber at Next Magazine has written up an excellent piece on the outbreak, "Same Band, Different Tune". His title refers to "And The Band Played On", the incredible book by Randy Shilts about the emergence of AIDS, and this is precisely the unwanted association that has put gay media in such a spin when it comes to covering this deadly outbreak (not an epidemic, and a vaccine is available ) that nobody - not even the NY Times - knows why it's targeting our community.

(SHOWcase) Family Untied!

After coming out as a lesbian and losing custody of her two young children in the late 1970’s, Ronni Sanlo turned her life into building community through her personal, political and professional struggles. Narrated by Meredith Baxter (Family Ties), FAMILY UNTIED is told through the life experiences of activist Ronni Sanlo and actress Meredith Baxter, documenting the parallel journeys of their very different lives.

The film offers insight into pieces of the LGBT historical puzzle, from the anti-gay campaign started by Anita Bryant in 1977, to coming out late in life on national television in 2012. FAMILY UNTIED portrays a story of love and loss, family and solitude, acting and activism.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Huey Lewis celebrates 30 Years of Sports!

by MK Scott

Back in 1983, My sister brought home a copy of a cassette tape of an Album called 'Sports' by Huey Lewis and band called the News, with big Hits like 'Heart of Rock N' Roll', we waited as Huey shouted our town of 'Portland, Oregon', and his other hit, 'I want a new Drug'. Why was a older looking man sounding so Hip and Square at the same time?

I remember my sister coming back from a 1984 concert, wearing a 'Sports' T-shirt. I really didn't get into Huey Lewis as much as my sister, but I do recall Huey being part of 'We are the World' and singing with our future ally, Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes in the music video and loving his hit, "Power of Love" in the Back to the Future. In the 90's Huey and News kind of disappeared until now.

When she appeared on Facts of Life as Cinnamon, a rival of Tootie, and have her perform her Hit, 'Two of hearts' and then walk off with my secret crush George Clooney was the icing. I always wanted to know what Happened to our Favorite, and she always remain a one hit wonder? VHI ranked 'Hearts' Top 27 of the all-time one hit wonders, and I would think we would hear more from the world of music and acting. After 20 years, Stacey is back and well-received from her Gay Fan Base. I caught up with Stacey Q at the Cuff Pride Street Party is Seattle's Capitol Hill, who was sharing a trailer with the Lady Bunny and R & B star, Crystal Waters.
