When word got out that Mariah Carey would be performing at Saturday night’s Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Los Angeles, the event quickly became a sellout.

The crowd of 1,200 had to wait until the very end of a long, star-studded evening, before the Grammy winner was introduced by Empire star Jussie Smollett.

‘I don’t know how to explain how much a love this woman … she is one of the greatest vocalists of all time,’ said Smollett who came out publicly as a gay man earlier this month.

‘I’m about to pee myself,’ he admitted. ‘She’s right there.’

(OUTscene AMERICA) RED CARPET: HRC -LA Gala!

It must’ve been the Mariah Carey effect.

Saturday night’s arrivals carpet at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner at the JW Marriott at LA Live drew more media than there was space so we were packed like sardines.

I literally had to stand sideways the entire time as I did interviews with honorees Shonda Rhimes and HBO’s Michael Lombardo as well as HRC President Chad Griffin.

Mariah was confirmed just a few days before the event and Griffin told me he immediately began hearing from a lot of people in LA where he lived until starting his East Coast-based job with HRC.

‘Some folks who hadn’t gotten their tickets early enough then suddenly got their tickets,’ he said. ‘We’re all excited to see Mariah no question about it.’

Lombardo told me during our chat that he was ‘incredibly proud’ to be receiving the HRC Visibility Award.

‘I’m a gay American, I’m a father, I’m a husband. HRC has been at the forefront of protecting my rights – the right of my marriage, the rights of my kids. There’s not an organization that I could be more proud to be recognized by.’

I also chatted with George Takei, Betty DeGeneres, Jonathan Del Arco, Lance Bass, Peter Paige and Ryan Carnes.

Matt Bomer posed for photos then blew by the press line but I was able to snap one fuzzy photo. Was chatting with Takei when Cheyenne Jackson and his hubby came by and I also spotted but did not get to chat with Guillermo Diaz, Maria Bello, Lea Thompson, Dan Bucatinsky and Michelle Stafford.

Mariah didn’t do the arrivals carpet, of course, nor did keynote speaker Al Franken, Girls star Lena Dunham, or Empire star Jussie Smollett.

Joel Grey, who last week publicly came out as a gay man, presented the award.

(OUTscene NW) COVERAGE: Portland's 4th HRC Dinner was Magic!

DLB was an angel       /MKS
by MK Scott

Up until a few years ago, Portland never hosted an Annual HRC Gala. This evening was always celebrated at the Pacific NW Dinner in Seattle, and Portland members came to that one. Now Portland has one and hosted its 4th Annual Gala this past Saturday in the Gardens of Lewis and Clark College. With over 600 attendees, the gala was the place to be on  a Hot summer night. The atmosphere felt like a wedding as attendees wore summer business casual compare to the regular Black tie style.

(MY VIEW) 10 Reasons Why Marriage Equality Won This Year!

by Chad Griffin

This year, marriage equality won four unprecedented victories in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. For years, organizations like the so-called National Organization for Marriage have bragged that equality always loses at the ballot box. This year we took that talking point away once and for all. Here's how:

(OUTscene AMERICA) Sally Field is presented HRC Award by her gay son, Sam Greisman, then gives powerful, moving speech!

Below is a video of Sally Field from Saturday night’s HRC gala in Washington DC. She’s every bit the wonderful mother of a gay son in real life as she was on Brother’s & Sisters.

And what a son! He’s 25-year-old Sam Greisman, by far the youngest of Field’s three sons.

Sam attended NYU and presented the HRC Ally for Equality Award to his mom, a star since the mid-60s and the winner of two Oscars (Norma Rae, Places in the Heart) and three Emmys (Sybil, ER and Brothers & Sisters). She has also starred in such gay faves as Steel Magnolias, Soapdish and, of course, Gidget and The Flying Nun.

(OUTscene NW) the 2012 HRC Pacific NW Dinner was all about WA Politics and Marriage Equality!

Dustin receives the visibility award
HRC's annual dinner was a blast, but downsized!  Full house at the Sheraton Ballroom, list of good speakers, including several spots from Chad Griffin, new national President. Lacy All of HRC Seattle launched the hour segment about Marriage Equality. Good audience response when the money donated by the jazzed crowd brought in $300,000 to Approve Ref-74 campaign. The crowd was buzzing at fever pitch with this amazing effort.

Dustin Lance Black, film maker famed for his movie about Harvey Milk gave a stunning speech - (Video Posted this week). He was on fire, very, very personal and to the point. Impressive. He reminded us if Washington State can approve Gay Marriage this rest of the country will take notice. We also got to know the new HRC President, Chad Griffin and saw a new ad that was a Prop 8 ad that we will see from the opposition of Ref-74. Closing the evening was IDOL/VOICE/Broadway Diva, Frenchie Davis.

Noticed that Lance Black dodged out after his speech and was later spotted at Seattle's New Club, Q.

At the Federal Club reception, prior to the event, the spotlight was on Washington with speeches from Jay Inslee, candidate for Governor and Sen Maria Cantwell (D-WA). Also spotted was congressman, Rick Larsen. Look for More coverage in the coming days!

BRING IT On: HRC Targets Michele Bachmann!

Michele Bachmann has her haters, but now gay rights groups are setting their sights on the Minnesota Republican, with one activist calling her a "target-rich environment." Human rights organizations say they plan to home in this summer on Bachmann's past anti-gay efforts in Minnesota, reports Politico

Bachmann and husband Marcus—who one patient says told him to "pray away the gay"—have said that sexual preference is a choice, and in addition to leading the 2004 push for a ban on gay marriage, Bachmann has credited her stepsister's lesbianism to Satan. "Given her husband’s positions and things she’s said in past, she’s going to have a really hard time appearing as a reasonable mainstream candidate,” says a Human Rights Campaign rep. Although Bachmann's first campaign ad avoids social issues entirely, gay rights groups will use her stance to help stir support for President Obama—who hasn't quite lived up to expectations when it comes to gay marriage. "It’s not just that [Bachmann] doesn’t believe in marriage," says one gay rights leader. "She doesn’t believe in gay people existing."

Bring it on, counters the president of the National Organization for Marriage: “The more that they attack Michele Bachmann on these grounds, the better her chances of winning the Iowa caucuses are."

ATTACK: Human Rights Campaign DC Shop Vandalized by Radical LGBT Group!

A group calling itself 'The Right Honorable Wicked Stepmothers’ Traveling, Drinking and Debating Society and Men’s Auxiliary' vandalized the HRC Store in Washington D.C.'s Dupont Circle on Tuesday night with pink paint, coating the windows and writing the word "Stonewall" across the front sidewalk, the Washington Blade reports.

The group left a lengthy message on the website Pastebin.com outlining its reasons for doing so:

This week marks the 42nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots...

...The modern LGBT movement owes its success to three days of smashing, burning, punching, and kicking--all of it happily indiscriminate--and the confrontational tactics of groups like ACT-UP that followed in the decades since. Yet, somehow we've forgotten our riotous roots.

The group also explained why it was targeting its own community:

Why, you're asking, did we specifically target the HRC, a massive national gay rights non-profit as opposed to vomiting urine on Rick Santorum or something equally fun?

Put simply, they suck. What do they suck? Cash. Lots of it.

The HRC rakes in something approaching 50 million dollars a year in revenue--their executive director, Joe Salmonellamayonaisemanese pulls in a salary of several hundred grand. What have we gotten out of this bloated carcass? Not a thing worth mentioning and every now and then, they eagerly sell trans people up the river. Seriously, this is an organization that hordes money and does nothing useful. It's a sad, sick dinosaur.
