Matthew Todd’s Pride

by MK Scott

PRIDE:
THE STORY OF THE
LGBTQ EQUALITY MOVEMENT
BY MATTHEW TODD
WELDON OWEN

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the first Pride parade, writer, journalist, and former editor of Attitude magazine Matthew Todd brings us Pride: The Story of the LGBTQ Equality Movement, a beautiful, exhaustively researched history of milestones in the community’s fight for equality.

But this is a new kind of Pride month, one defined by pandemic-related concern and nationwide protest of systemic racism and police brutality. Todd is explicit in linking the fight for LGBTQ+ equality with any struggle to secure fairness and justice. As he says in his introduction to the book: “If we really want to honor the people who fought at the Stonewall Inn on that unusually hot June night in 1969, then we need to defend those hard-won rights and confront anything that threatens the free and stable societies protecting them. Those who wish to control others or have an interest in the status quo will tell you that protest never achieves anything. I hope this book assures you that protest can achieve a great deal, and that when people act together they have true power – and that sometimes using that power is absolutely necessary.”

Pride is a unique and comprehensive account of the challenges facing the LGBTQ community, and a celebration of the rights that have been won for so many as a result of the sacrifices and passion of this mass movement.

The book includes a wealth of rare images and documents, accompanied by moving essays from key players in and witnesses to the moments that pushed the movement forward, such as personal testimonies from Judy Shepard, activist and mother of Matthew Shepard; Jake Shears; David Furnish [Elton John’s husband] and many others.

I had a chance to chat with Todd via Skype from his home in London.

(TIME-Warp) Honoring the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall!

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York City. They are frequently cited as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

One June 26, 2015, The Stonewall was finally registered as a Historical Landmark!

People of the Pride Parade – An extraordinary visual essay on love, courage, and finding oneself

For the 50th anniversary of the Pride March comes a visual celebration of the diverse, vibrant, and exuberant attendees of New York City’s Pride.

This gorgeous bright book honors the colorful celebrants of the New York City Pride March and Dyke March, capturing the faces that bring the rainbows and liveliness Pride shines with today. Through joyful portraits of two hundred LGBTQ+ community members and allies from New York City’s WorldPride, this is a resplendent one-of-a-kind volume, a portal to the spirit, sequins, and sexual liberty of the weekend, a keepsake tribute to the power of love over hate, and a meaningful touchstone, immortalizing the effervescence, excitement, and positive energy of those who attend.

To make this incredible volume, renowned Northeastern photographer, Alyssa Blumstein, who was featured on Vice’s Motherboard, photographed Pride attendees of all ages and races, sexual orientations, and genders – native New Yorkers and those who’d come in from around the world to attend the parade. The result is an extraordinary keepsake package that channels the essence and person-on-the-street nature of Humans of New York to showcase poignant and joyful portraits of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.

Alyssa Blumstein is a renowned photographer who previously worked as a food photographer and the director of social media for Dale Talde’s Three Kings Restaurant Group. Her collections such as Weakest Link, where she documented hundreds of abandoned printers from around the world, have been featured by media outlets such as Vice’s Motherhood. Her vibrant work celebrates people and events. Blumstein works in Boston and New York City.

(MK SCOTT) EXCLUSIVE: 80's Icon, Stacey Q is Back with Pride!

Stacey Adored MK               /MKS
by MK Scott

I admit that there was only one name at Seattle Pride this year, that I was excited to meet and chat with (Unlike last year with Amanda Lepore and Cazwell) and super hyped to track down. Back in High School, I was smitten with a 80's Blonde Bombshell (After Madonna, and before Kylie) named Stacy Q. When she appeared on Facts of Life as Cinnamon, a rival of Tootie, and have her perform her Hit, 'Two of hearts' and then walk off with my secret crush George Clooney was the icing. I always wanted to know what Happened to our Favorite, and she always remain a one hit wonder? VHI ranked 'Hearts' Top 27 of the all-time one hit wonders, and I would think we would hear more from the world of music and acting. After 20 years, Stacey is back and well-received from her Gay Fan Base. I caught up with Stacey Q at the Cuff Pride Street Party is Seattle's Capitol Hill, who was sharing a trailer with the Lady Bunny and R & B star, Crystal Waters.

(OUTscene NW) PHOTOS/TV: Cruisey T's Pride Cruise was an L.E.C. Experience!

by MK Scott

Van City Pride is never complete until you make it on a Cruisey-T Pride Cruise, in my case the Pride Party Cruise which is a 4 Hour Floating T-Dance that starts at the Harbour Marina and travel to the English Bay and Back.

Besides Dancing where you stand, there were Drag Performances by Van City's own Raye Sunshine, and Iona Whipp. Did I mention the all-can-you-Buffet Dinner?

CruiseyT's main focus is to raise funds for local charities and organizations within the Gay & Lesbian Communities. Since the inception of CruiseyT in 1991, a total of $600,000 has been donated to worthy causes and direct service agencies. Check Out the Grande Finale on September 2nd.

I still long for the days when Seattle had its own "Queen City Cruise" which was always a Lubricating, Ejaculating Celebration!

(OUTscene America) PHOTOS/TV: Satisfying Van City Pride Parade was Community, Community, Community!

Thomas/HP
by MK Scott

Hundreds of thousands of spectators took in the annual Vancouver Pride Parade Aug. 5 on a spectacularly sunny day.

This year's event saw several milestones, including a visit from the premier of British Columbia Christy Clark and, for the first time ever, participation from the Vancouver Canucks professional hockey team. One thing I love about this parade is that all forms of Government were represented including Fire, Police (The Police Chief Marched) , City, etc. Only 2 Corporate sponsors, TD Bank and Telus Communications. The rest was community, Community, Community! Think if the city and the community of the Seafair parade participated in Seattle's Pride. What a sight!

(MY VIEW) No Latex, No Love: The Bare Side of Gay Pride

by Marten Weber

Summer is here, and so, after nine months of writing a new novel, and in rather desperate need of a tan, yours truly took his husband to a European beach resort for Gay Pride. Imagine sun, beaches, concerts, drag queens, Lady Gaga and Kylie impersonators, skinny models, gogo boys, and over a thousand men in all shapes and sizes, celebrating their freedom. Being free to express our sexuality is wonderful. Let's remember that in 78 countries in the world, people still get imprisoned, tortured, hanged, stoned, or shot for being gay, lesbian, transgender, etc.

(MK SCOTT) EXCLUSIVE: MK's 'Joint' PRIDE Inter-view with Cazwell AND Amanda Lepore!

MK w/ Amanda at the Cuff pride Party
by MK Scott

In the last 2 years, Seattle Pride to me means more Celebs coming to town. In 2010, chatting with Julie Goldman at Pridefest was a highlight as was last year with a full, on camera interview with old pal, Armistead Maupin. This year was no exception, 2 artists from the New York club scene in town at Seattle Pride each performing only 3 miles apart. 2 artists that know and have worked together not to mention respect each other. Gay Rapper, Cazwell (in a Noisy Tent) was just about to start a 30 min. DJ session at the DJ Stage at Pride Fest in Seattle Center.

Meanwhile, Transgendered recording artist, Amanda Lepore was on stage at the Cuff Block party in Capitol Hill. I had only 20 min. to travel, I made it up to Amanda, right after her set, and we spoke in her trailer.

(LIST) Gay Pride 2012: 30 Anthems Perfect For Celebrating

For many of us, nothing quite says Gay Pride Month like sparkling sequins, a twirling disco ball and a triumphant diva(s) with glass-shattering pipes.

Of course, those elements may not appear in each of the 30 songs to make our list of best gay anthems ever, but we like to think of them as recurring themes. But what is it, exactly, that makes an unforgettable gay anthem?
