FLAWLESS: Streep Wows as Iron Lady!

As a biopic, The Iron Lady is nothing to write home about—but critics are blown away by Meryl Streep's typically excellent performance as Margaret Thatcher:

• The film contains "little sense of the outside world, the human cost, or the ripple effect of divisive government policies. It is a movie that gives us Thatcher without Thatcherism," writes Xan Brooks in the Guardian. But Streep "is the one great weapon of this often silly and suspect picture." She offers "a masterpiece of mimicry."

• In the New York Times, AO Scott calls the movie "a credible enough portrait." But "Streep provides, once again, a technically flawless impersonation that also seems to reveal the inner essence of a well-known person."
• There's "more softness than steel" here, writes Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times. "Rather than an examination, or an assessment, of her politics, it instead offers up an affecting if not always satisfying portrait of the strong-willed leader humbled by age."
• Dana Stevens is less forgiving at Slate. "The Iron Lady is, to put it kindly, a shambles," she writes. "If it weren’t for Streep," the film "would be unwatchable. But then, Streep could make a morning spent in line at the DMV feel like spellbinding drama."

A lot of big news happened in 2011 ... and some of it only half-happened. The Atlantic Wire took a look at the most frustrating unanswered questions of the year, and keeps its fingers crossed that 2012 will bring new details. Highlights from its list of the year's 10 most nagging mysteries:

• What's the deal with the Long Island serial killer/killers? In the course of searching for Shannan Gilbert, police ultimately found 10 bodies. Gilbert's body, recently found, was No. 11—except she died accidentally. And authorities can't even agree whether one or two killers are responsible for the deaths. Are police anywhere near catching this guy(s)?

• If the West Memphis Three didn't do it, who did? Another murder mystery. Three men in Arkansas imprisoned 18 years for murders they insist they didn't commit were freed in August after striking a deal with prosecutors. And they still maintain their innocence. So who's the guilty party?
• What's wrong with John Edwards' health? His lawyers say he's suffering from an undisclosed medical condition and will be too sick to stand trial on Jan. 30. They want a 60-day delay. Edwards doesn't really look sickly. So what's the mystery illness?
• What were the pilots of Air France 447 thinking? The black box was recovered this year, but it hasn't answered all the questions about what took the Airbus 330, and the 228 people aboard, down. Why didn't the pilots respond to the stall warnings? And why didn't the lead pilot take the reins when things started going wrong?

LOADED: Billy Bean says it will take “one special (and Hot) guy” to come out while still playing majors!

It was so exciting when retired American soccer pro David Testo came out earlier this year.

But he is hardly a household name.

We are going to need an active player in one of the three big U.S. team sports: baseball, basketball or football to come out to really make a breakthrough.

Hopefully that player will be enveloped with all kinds of love and support and would be soon followed by scores more just like him.

Because we KNOW they are there.

‘It’s going to take maybe just one special guy who can really move that ball forward,’ retired baseball pro Billy Bean told Greg in Hollywood.

Billy came out after his playing days were over and still is only one of two baseball pros to ever do so.

POWER MAD: Kelly Clarkson Sales Soar After She Backs Ron Paul!

Behold the power of Ron Paul's followers: Since Kelly Clarkson tweeted her support for Paul to be the nominee, her album sales have soared, report CNN Money and the Hollywood Reporter.

Her latest, Stronger, shot up from No. 38 to No. 7 on Amazon between Thursday and yesterday, with sales up 442%. As of this morning, the album had risen to No. 2. What's more, an older album, All I Ever Wanted, saw sales spike nearly 400% as it rose from 1,749 to 363. One new fan posted this in a review: "I must admit I have not really followed you but your recent stance on Ron Paul made me check you out. If you are smart enough to support Ron Paul then you are probably talented too."

BACKLASH: Bachmann Insists Paul Bribed My Guy!

Michelle Bachmann may be down in the polls, but she's certainly not backing down. The GOP candidate yesterday continued to insist that her Iowa campaign chair defected to Ron Paul's camp because he was bribed to do so, reports Bloomberg. Kent Sorenson "told me that he was offered money, he was offered a lot of money by the Ron Paul campaign,” Bachmann said. "No one else knows about that conversation other than Kent Sorenson and myself." Sorenson continues to maintain that he "was never offered money from the Ron Paul campaign or anyone associated with them and certainly would never accept any."

DRAMA QUEEN: Gingrich Tears Up at Iowa Stop!

The Newt Gingrich story line has long been whether "good Newt" could keep "bad Newt" at bay during the campaign. Well today, we met "emotional Newt." The candidate got choked up and shed some tears during a campaign event in Iowa when remembering his late mother, notes the Huffington Post.

“I identify my mother with being happy, loving life, having a sense of joy in her friends,” he said. Kit Gingrich eventually had to go into a long-term care facility because of bipolar disease and depression, among other ailments. “My emphasis on brain science comes indirectly from dealing with ...” he said, before his voice broke. "See, I am getting very emotional, but dealing with the real problems of real people in my family. And so it’s not a theory, it’s in fact, my mother.” He added: “I do policy much easier than I do personal.” This being a political campaign, the Los Angeles Times can't help but be reminded of Hillary Clinton's tears on the eve of her New Hampshire win in 2008.

BACK: Parenting Rights Restored To Lesbian Mom!

In Brevard County, FL, a mother's parenting rights have been restored in appeals court after a previous ruling decreed she had none, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

The woman, a police officer, was in a committed same-sex relationship for more than 11 years. Her partner was infertile; she was not. When the couple decided to have a baby, this woman donated one of her eggs, which was implanted in her partner's womb and brought to term. When the couple split last year, a Brevard County court ruled that the partner who gave birth to the child should have sole parenting rights, though he said the decision "broke his heart." But the law was the law; the partner who donated her egg had no legal standing. Not so, apparently. Last week, writes the Sentinel:

... a state appeals court in Daytona Beach overturned [the] decision, saying the other mother has parental rights, too.


The 5th District Court of Appeal ruled that the U.S. and Florida constitutions trump Florida law and give parenting rights to both women. State law, it added, has not kept up with the times.
"This is a unique case, and the appellate courts in Florida have never before considered a case quite like it," it said.

NO WAY: Is Religion Tearing Katy, Russell Apart?

The Katy Perry-Russell Brand divorce rumors have been flying for a while now—both Perry and Brand have refuted them within the past month—but now things are (maybe) getting serious.

The latest:

• On Wednesday, Us reported that Perry and Brand had spent Christmas apart. After a "massive fight," a source tells the magazine, Perry decided to go to Hawaii with friends rather than to London with her husband. Part of the problem, according to another source: "Katy doesn't think Russell respects her parents' Christian beliefs or her friends."

• While in Hawaii, Perry was photographed in the waves without her wedding ring. The New York Post notes she could have simply been trying to keep it safe—but Brand doesn't have the same excuse. He was photographed sans ring in London yesterday. (See the picture.)

• The Post also points out that "regular tweeter" Perry hasn't posted anything on Twitter since Monday, and that Brand has been similarly quiet.

SPOILED: 'Gay Nativity' Vandalized in California!

Police have launched a hate crime investigation into vandalism of a "gay nativity" scene outside a California church. The scene at Claremont United Methodist Church featured three wooden light boxes portraying a heterosexual and two homosexual couples holding hands beneath a Star of Bethlehem and the words: "Christ is Born." The gay couples were pushed over, reports the Los Angeles Times. The church has a history of featuring social or political messages in its nativity scenes, but they have never before been vandalized. "Christ's birth in a stable had a lot to do with being marginalized," said the church pastor. "What this church has tried to do through these scenes is say, 'What would that look like today?'"

WSH LIST: It's Obama-Clinton in 2012?

Robert Reich may have "absolutely no inside information," but the former labor secretary is making an educated guess as to the 2012 Democratic ticket: It'll be President Obama and Hillary Clinton, Reich writes on his blog. "Obama needs to stir the passions and enthusiasms of a Democratic base that’s been disillusioned with his cave-ins to regressive Republicans. Hillary Clinton on the ticket can do that," he notes.

Echoing Jonathan Alter, Reich suggests that Joe Biden would love to be secretary of state. Putting Clinton on the ticket would also turn the focus away from the economy—a big plus, given the "better than even chance we'll be back in a recession"—and put it on the administration's successful foreign policy. An Obama-Clinton ticket would also combine Gallup's "most admired" man and woman this year. On top of all that, Clinton would become the frontrunner for the Dems in 2016, which could help the party hold the presidency for 12 years, Reich notes.

What's That? Perry on Lawrence v. Texas!

One day in the not-too-distant future, Rick Perry will disappear from the pages of the nation's newspapers forever. Unfortunately for him, that day has yet to arrive, and the Texan governor still has at least a few weeks in which to embarass himself on the record.

At a meet and greet today in Cedar Falls, IA, Gov. Perry was asked by a voter to "defend his criticism of limited government" in the Supreme Court case of Lawrence v. Texas -- the case which, in 2003, resulted in Texas's anti-sodomy law being struck down as unconstitutional. Perry was Texas's governor at the time. According to ABC News: “I wish I could tell you I knew every Supreme Court case. I don’t, I’m not even going to try to go through every Supreme Court case, that would be — I’m not a lawyer,” Perry said at the Blue Strawberry Coffee Shop here. “We can sit here and you know play I gotcha questions on what about this Supreme Court case or whatever, but let me tell you, you know and I know that the problem in this country is spending in Washington, D.C., it’s not some Supreme Court case.”
Maybe so. But seeing as Perry referenced the case in his most recent book, and seeing how Perry is trying to portray himself as the most stridently "pro-family," anti-gay candidate in the Republican field, he ought at least to behave as though he's been paying attention to the culture wars. You can bet Rick Santorum knows about Lawrence v. Texas.

BACKTRACK: Kelly Clarkson Endorses Ron Paul; Stunned By Backlash!

Pop star Kelly Clarkson, who is in most respects an average gal with an average gal's indifference to the news, took to Twitter this morning to express her love for Ron Paul: I love Ron Paul ... I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't.

 I have never heard that he’s a racist? I definitely don’t agree with racism, that’s ignorant.

The Pauline Army was quick to embrace Ms. Clarkson. But as the singer examined her Twitterfeed, she began to learn disturbing things. Subsequently, she Tweeted: I love all people and could care less if you like men or women. I have never seen or heard Ron Paul say anything against gay people?

And, upon encountering a rumor that Dr. Paul is a homphobe: Clarkson's double misuse of the question mark as a sign of shell-shockedness. It's never fun to learn you've accidentally aligned yourself with a (possible) homophobic racist isolationist survivalist kookypants. Sometimes, it must suck to be famous.

With Christmas and Hanukkah over, most of us are gifted out. But not this TV critic. There's a bag of coal over my shoulder with some choice lumps that are waiting to be gifted to some richly deserving TV duds out there.

So without further ado, here are my choices for the dumbest, oddest, silliest, most misbegotten moments and shows and what-have-you of the 2011 TV season. Sincere apologies to those overlooked, and a ho ho ho humbug to those who are not.

In 16 Days, One LIFE to Live ends after 43 Yrs, as we say goodbye we will showcase some the finest, and outrageous moments in Daytime History. Today (From 1989 to 1992), Now that Viki has found her Missing Daughter, Megan (Jessica Tuck) and is stunned at her Diva Behavior, it takes time for them to bond. Max meets Megan and the chase is on. Megan is an actress on the soap, 'Fraternity Row' and wants an Emmy (I mean Daisy) Award. Later after a Trauma,  Megan takes on another personality, Ruby and hooks up with Marco! and by 1992, Megan is Married to Max's Half-Brother,  Jake (Joe Lando) and is dying of Lupus. Get the tissues and witness one of the greatest death scenes in Daytime History!

DITCHED: Bachmann's Iowa Chair Defects to Ron Paul!

With the Iowa caucuses just days away, it's not looking good for Michele Bachmann: Her Iowa campaign chair has defected to Ron Paul. Kent Sorenson, an Iowa state senator, says it was a tough decision, but he felt obligated to defend Paul against the Republican establishment, the Washington Post reports.

"We're going to take Ron Paul all the way to the White House," he told a Paul rally just a few hours after appearing at a Bachmann rally where he declined to speak, citing dental work. "I still maintain an immense amount of respect for Michele," Sorenson said in a statement. "But the fact is, there is a clear top tier in the race for the Republican nomination for president, both here in Iowa and nationally. Ron Paul is easily the most conservative of this group." Bachmann told reporters that Sorenson left her campaign because Ron Paul's people offered him a large sum of money. The Paul campaign says it is not paying Sorenson.

AHHHHH: Cheetah the Chimp Dead at 80!

America's most famous chimp has died of liver failure at a primate sanctuary in Florida. Cheetah was once believed to have starred alongside Johnny Weissmuller in the '30s Tarzan movies. But an author hired to write his "autobiography" debunked most of the famous chimp's life story, determining that Cheetah—once owned by a Hollywood animal trainer fond of telling tall tales—had never appeared in any movies, and was only around 50 years old, not 80 as the animal sanctuary claimed.

Cheetah was inherited by the trainer's nephew, who set up a sanctuary for show business primates where the chimp spent most of his life—and where revelations about the chimp's real past only increased people's interest. "I've had emails from people saying that myth and magic are far more important than facts and figures," the nephew says. Sanctuary workers describe Cheetah as an outgoing chimp who loved finger painting and making people laugh—but who wouldn't hesitate to fling poop when he didn't like what was going on.

SMASH: Will 'Smash' be a Hit?

Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston, former American Idol contestant Katherine McPhee, Broadway, Kate Clinton, and Steven Spielberg are just a few of the names involved in the forthcoming NBC drama Smash.

The show's drama revolves around the mounting of a Broadway musical, and NBC has just put out a seven-minute promo on the show featuring footage and interviews with the cast and producers. It appears to be shaping up as a must-watch.

HOMAGE: Did Lupone and Close make up for Cook?

Watching last night’s telecast of the Kennedy Center Honors on CBS, Glenn Close sang a beautiful ballad as part of a tribute to honoree Barbara Cook and was soon followed by Patti LuPone, observes Greg in Hollywood!

Flash back to the mid-90s when Close got to be Norma Desmond in the very first Broadway production of Sunset Boulevard – at LuPone’s expense.

It was a major triumph for Close who went on to win the Tony Award for lead actress in a musical. For LuPone who was supposed to be the first Norma on Broadway, it was the most disappointing experience of her career.

SOCK IT TO ME? New Book Alleges Richard Nixon Had Longterm Gay Relationship!

UK tabloid Daily Mail is reporting on a new biography of Richard Nixon by journalist Don Fulsom which suggests former President Richard Nixon had a drinking problem, beat his wife, and had deep ties to the Mafia and a long-term affair with Cuban-American businessman Bebe Rebozo: Yet the most extraordinary claim is that the homophobic Nixon may have been gay himself. If true, it would provide a fascinating insight into the motivation and behaviour of a notoriously secretive politician.

Fulsom argues that Nixon may have had an affair with his best friend and confidant, a Mafia‑connected Florida wheeler-dealer named Charles 'Bebe' Rebozo who was even more crooked than Nixon.

The book, Nixon's Darkest Secrets, is out next month — by coincidence at the same time as the UK release of a new film directed by Clint Eastwood about another supposed closet gay among Washington's 20th-century hard men.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get much worse than Kim Kardashian and her 72-day marriage, along comes Sinead O'Connor to beat that—by 54 days. Yes, O’Connor’s marriage to Barry Herridge is over just 18 days after it began, the singer revealed yesterday on her website. The couple had wed in Las Vegas on Dec. 8, People notes.

O’Connor writes that “the marriage was kyboshed” within three hours by “certain people” in Herridge’s life who opposed it, based on things they read about O’Connor in the media. The rambling (and grammatically challenged) post goes on to mention “a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don't drink.” O’Connor writes that Herridge “was enormously wounded and very badly effected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage. It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear.” She notes that she still loves Herridge and calls him a “wonderful man,” but says that they “made a mistake rushing into getting married, for altruistic reasons."

“I just thought that Gabi and I could make it work,” Will tells his grandmother of his now ex-girlfriend. “I guess I loved the idea of us more than I loved her. I’ve been having these feelings for awhile now and I can’t get rid of them. I’ve been trying but I can’t.”

When Marlena asks him what kind of feelings but Will decides it’s not the right time.

'LITTLE' MONSTER: Gaga's Ex-Assistant Sues!

Lady Gaga just can't get good help these days: At least not the kind who will seamlessly handle all aspects of her life, manage her crazy wardrobe, wait at her beck and call at all hours, and not sue for their trouble. Seems one Jennifer O'Neill is suing Gaga for some $380,000 in unpaid overtime for her 13 months on the $75,000-a-year job, reports the New York Post.

O'Neill claims, among other things, that she ensured "the promptness of a towel following a shower and (served) as a personal alarm clock to keep [Gaga] on schedule,” according to court papers. O'Neill says her services were required at her “earliest waking hour” or for “spontaneous, random matters in the middle of the night." Another former PA claims she was required to sleep with Gaga most nights, because the singer didn't want to be alone, and that the two shared showers and makeup time. A Gaga rep dismissed the lawsuit as "completely without merit."

GOODBYE, DOLLY: Harry Kullijian dies at 91!

Very sad to report that Harry Kullijian has died at the age of 91.

Yes, he had a nice, long life but if you ever saw he and his wife, Carol Channing together, they seemed like a couple of kids and you wanted them to have as much time together as possible.
They were sweethearts in junior high school but then spent the next 70 years or so apart – married others – before finding their way back to each other.

They married in 2003 and in 2005 started the not-for-profit Dr. Carol Channing and Harry Kullijian Foundation for the Arts.

Their mission was to tell the world that exposure to arts would benefit students in other scholastic and social areas.

The couple’s late-in-life love story is beautifully featured in the documentary Carol Channing: Larger Than Life which opens in Los Angeles and New York on Jan. 2o with a wider release to follow. 

“Every time he kisses me, I think I’m 12 years old again,” Channing says in the film.

There’s was a real love story and my condolences to Miss Channing for her loss. I’m so glad she and Harry found each other again. They were always so enchanting together.

PHONY: Lautner 'People' Magazine Coming Out Story is a Fake!

A mock-up of a forthcoming People magazine cover on which Twilight star Taylor Lautner announces he's "Out & Proud" is a fake, a People rep tells Gossip Cop: A rep for the magazine confirms to Gossip Cop exclusively that it’s “absolutely fake.”

The fraudulent issue, which reads, "Tired of rumors, the Twilight star opens up about his decision to finaly come out. 'I'm more liberated, and happier than I've ever been'", borrows its Brad Pitt/Carnie Wilson sidebar from a May 2006 People cover, according to GS.

The cover fooled many, however, including hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons: Producer Russell Simmons was fooled by the fake, tweeting, "proud of Taylor Lautner for his bravery and his courage." He later responded to being duped, saying, " Disappointed that people would joke about someone coming out about their sexuality. Let Taylor Lautner be whoever he wants to be..."

Maybe this was a test and preview of things to Come?

KICK ASS: Trans Woman Beats Subway Rider for Calling Her a Man!

A video posted to YouTube shows a trans woman pursuing and then kicking and beating a man after he reportedly made a remark about her gender.

Writes the uploader of the video, titled 'TOSSED LIKE A RAG DOLL FOR TRYING IT!!!': "Morning after xmas on the nyc subway train, me and my girlfriends was walking to the train, dude shouted out 'thats a man' to my home girl and this is what happens when u disrespect a tranny in public".

Writes blogger TransGriot: "How many times have I warned you cispeople not to frack with transpeople?  It's not a good idea to get someone pissed off at you who not only has a little more strength than the average cis female, but is an estrogen based lifeform to boot. You also don't know how much bull feces that transperson may have gone through just trying to get through her day. Your attempt to make fun of them or disrespect them to prop up your own flagging self esteem may be the last straw that sets the transperson off and the next thing you know they're either reading you like a cheap novel, pulling out a can of whoop ass with your name on it or are doing both at the same time..."

PHOBE: Ron Paul 'Personally Uncomfortable' with Gays?

Eric Dondero, a former Senior Aide and Campaign Organizer for Ron Paul offers his view of the candidate's alleged racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia that has been brought to light by media via his old newsletters.

Dondero says Paul is not a racist, nor an anti-Semite, though he disagrees with the state of Israel. He calls Paul "out of touch" with Black and Latino culture. As for Paul's homophobia? 

Well, yes and no. He is not all bigoted towards homosexuals. He supports their rights to do whatever they please in their private lives. He is however, personally uncomfortable around homosexuals, no different from a lot of older folks of his era.
