(TIME-Warp) Remembering Paul Broussard's Brutal Murder, 29 years ago this Week!

Paul Broussard (1964–1991), a 27 year-old Houston-area banker and Texas A&M alumnus, was beaten and stabbed to death in a gay-bashing outside a Houston nightclub on July 4, 1991 by ten teenaged boys. The youths had driven from the northern Houston suburb of The Woodlands to the heavily gay area of Montrose solely to "beat up some queers," in the words of one of the convicted teens.

All ten of Broussard's assailants were eventually convicted. Activist Ray Hill lobbied the prosecutor and District attorney for "meaningful sentences" for the Woodlands Ten.

(MNW) Texas Sues to Stop Gays From Taking Family Leave!

It's been nearly two months since marriage was supposed to start in Alabama, and the state still doesn't have its act together. Texas just filed a lawsuit to prevent gays and lesbians from taking family medical leave. And it's going to take at least five different bills to overturn Michigan's marriage ban.

(MNW) Laws to Stop Marriage Equality Grow Increasingly Weird!

Texas is pushing a proposed law that would let the state overrule the Supreme Court. There's just one problem: they can't actually do that. Alabama judges have decided that they don't have to obey federal courts either, except that in reality, they do. And Oklahoma politician wants to switch from marriage licenses to marriage certificates, which would accomplish ... not very much.

(MNW) More Sneaky Anti-Gay Laws Popping Up!

It's been a huge week for marriage equality. Florida became the 36th state with the freedom to marry, judges in three southern states heard oral arguments, and the Supreme Court considered cases from five states. Plus a lawmaker in Texas is wasting everyone's time with a new anti-gay law that would make life difficult for everyone.

(MNW) State Lawyers Ignore Public Support for Marriage!

The rules have changed yet again this week in Colorado, with new rulings on marriage from multiple courts. New polls show growing support for equality in western states, but multiple Attorneys General have filed new briefs to stop gay and lesbian couples from marrying. And another Republican member of Congress has come out in favor of the freedom to marry.

(MNW) US Supreme Court Considers Marriage Case This Week!

Marriage finally comes to Illinois, months after the state passed a marriage equality bill. Numerous state schedule marriage case milestones for this summer. The Attorney General of Florida insists that a marriage ban is necessary but can't explain why. And the US Supreme Court will take a look at marriage in Oregon this week.

(MNW) 16 Million Americans Gain Freedom to Marry!

More than sixteen and a half million Americans gained marriage equality last week, with decisive victories in Oregon and Pennsylvania. We have brand new lawsuits in the last few states that needed one. And the National Organization for Marriage has suffered even more losses this week.

(Into the Light Walk) Into the Light Walk Reaches the Gulf of Mexico!

by Alan Bounville

Almost 3,000 miles since stepping off in Seattle, I’ve made it to the gulf waters! The journey has been a roller coaster of emotions and physical states of being. And each day brings with it the magic of the unexpected.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has helped me get further down the road so I can continue sharing the demand for full equality for TBLG folks. Each person we talk to about why we need full equality is another potential ally. Each closeted TBLG person we encourage to step out of the shadows is a potential life ripe for transformation. Together, we are changing the world, one step at a time.

Into the light we go!

(INTO THE LIGHT WALK) March on for Equality!

by Alan Bounville

7 Vigils, 2 Workshops, 2 Performances, 1 Print News Article, Active Virtual Presence, Countless conversations about equality over hundreds of miles

Just a bit of the intentional activity in which I’ve engaged while walking across Texas…so far. Unless you are new to learning about the Into the Light Walk, you probably know that while I’ve been walking 6,000 miles from Seattle to Washington DC I perform solo plays encouraging people to become active in the shaping of our society, I facilitate social change and Theatre of the Oppressed workshops, and I hold vigils at some of the countless places where people have been murdered or have taken their own lives due to hate based on victim’s perceived or actual gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. I look at this work as what I can do at this point in my to make the world a better, more equal place.

LIST: Top 10 Trashiest Spring Break Cities!

With spring break nearly here, the connoisseurs of trashiness at COED Magazine have ranked America's top 10 "trashiest" destinations:
  1. Las Vegas: The gambling capital of the world was home to last year's MTV's Spring Break. No beach, but plenty of pool parties.
  2. Key West: Open-container laws go out the window in peak season.
  3. South Padre Island: 50,000 students descend on this Texas locale in March, and kegs are legal on the beach.
  4. Daytona: It's home to NASCAR, but it's earning another distinction: More than 1,000 underage drinkers were arrested here in 2010.
Peruse the rest of the list here.

(Into the Light Walk) A Vigil in San Antonio!

 by Alan Bounville

Here is the latest vigil I did with the family of Troy Martinez Clattenburg, a gay man who was shot execution style in the back of the head inside his home in San Antonio just under two years ago. Here, Troy's family, friends, and local San Antonio residents join me outside Troy's home where the murder took place.
