(TIME Warp) When a Governor Came OUT; 15 Years after the McGreevey Scandal!

On the afternoon of August 12, 2004, James McGreevey coupled the announcement of his decision to resign with a public declaration of his homosexuality and an admission to having had an extramarital affair with a man, Golan Cipel, an Israeli citizen and veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces, whom McGreevey appointed New Jersey homeland security adviser. Cipel, who had joined the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994 as Chief Information Officer at the Consulate General of Israel in New York, subsequently left the United States and returned to Israel after their affair was revealed. McGreevey was the first and, to date, the only openly gay state governor in United States history. (ed...MK met McGreevey in 2006 and found him Happy to be an Out Gay man.)

Since leaving the governorship, McGreevey has attended the General Theological Seminary in New York City to obtain his Master of Divinity degree, a requirement to becoming an Episcopal priest. Reports in April 2011 indicate that McGreevey's bid to be ordained was rejected.

McGreevey's life after politics, his calling as a priest and his ministry to prison inmates is covered in a 2013 HBO documentary film, Fall to Grace, directed by Alexandra Pelosi.

In July 2013, McGreevey was appointed head of Jersey City's employment training commission

(MATT BAUME) LGBT Issues at the First Democratic Debate!

We had had the first of six Democratic presidential debates, and here's what the candidates they had to say about LGBTs:

Well, actually they didn't say anything, probably because at this point they're pretty much all in agreement that everyone deserves the equal protection of the law. Now let's compare that to what the Republicans said at their debate ...

(FIRESIDE Chat w/ Matt Baume) The Phantom Roadmap to LGBT Discrimination!

Scheming villains thirst to rollback the progress our nation has made toward full LGBT equality. But, could they actually do it? Insidious laws like Arkansas' innocent-sounding "Intrastate Commerce Improvement Act" (sb202) may provide the roadmap.

Matt Baume's latest fireside chat takes us on an unsentimental journey into the phantom menace of anti-gay legislation.

(FIRESIDE Chat w/ Matt Baume) Taking Down an Anti-Gay Infomercial!

The anti-gay Family Research Council has a new video out about how the gays are going to ruin everything with all their pesky marrying and doing business and existing. The video's full of crazy claims, half-truths, and homophobia, and worst of all builds to a sneaky sales pitch at the end. Let's go point by point and take it down.

(Gay USA) You take the Good and Take the Bad!

  • The federal contractors' non-discrimination law took effect this week. It is no longer legal for companies receiving federal contracts to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
  • After last week's euphoria over the national condemnation of an anti-gay law in Indiana, we come back to earth with a reality check of continuing attacks on LGBT civil rights.
  • Springfield, Missouri voters repeal an LGBT antidiscrimination law.
  • The "fixes" to the bad laws in Indiana and Arkansas are not so great.
  • The Mormon Church is still railing against same-sex marriage and our "counterfeit lifestyles."
  • ore bad bills advancing in Louisiana, Florida and Texas.
  • The good news is that bad bills have died (for the moment) in Georgia and Nevada.
  • A lesbian couple in Guam is the first to apply for a marriage license there.
  • Ireland approves adoption by same-sex couples, before the referendum on same-sex marriage on May 22nd.
  • The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is accused by three ex-employees of defrauding the government of $20 million.
  • And on April 24th, ABC will devote two hours to Diane Sawyer's interview with Bruce Jenner.

(FIRESIDE Chat w/ Matt Baume) What's the Point of Boycotting Indiana?

Why are we boycotting Indiana, if there are 20 other states with laws that are almost exactly the same? And is a boycott going to do more harm than good? Let's discuss, with the help of our friends George Takei and Thomas.

(Fireside chat w/ Matt Baume) What Happy Pigs and Bigoted Weasels Have in Common!

Last week, Senator James Lankford (Oklahoma) and Representative Randy Forbes (Virginia) jumped on the fact that Chipotle suspended a pork supplier for failing to provide proper animal care. Then they twisted that news through a tangle of logic until it was sly justification for businesses to refuse service to LGBTs.

What do happy pigs have to do with discrimination? Not much.

But with "Religious Freedom" laws popping up all around the country, we're going to see more weasely false-equivalencies appearing in the news.

Let's unpack why a company's decision to to run its business according to a code of ethics DOES NOT mean that business owners can discriminate against anyone their religion does not approve of.

(MK Remembers) A Tale of 2 different Gay Mayors at their Inaugurals!

Murray/Shirosaki in 2014         /Portin
by MK Scott

It is great to live in the Pacific NW where equality and diversity is thriving, first with Gay Marriage in Washington State and soon coming to Oregon.

One great difference is we have some of the influential Gay Political Leaders in the country and I have gotten to know most of them in the last decade. Of course you know by now, that Politics is not my beat, but when I have it has created an impact.

Last night I attended the inauguration gala of Seattle's Newly sworn in Mayor Ed Murray as I did 5 years ago this week with the Inaugural of Portland Mayor Sam Adams.

What were the similarities? Differences? Let me tell about last night's event honoring Murray first.
