OUTLAWED: Iran Bans Barbie!

As the US tries to crack down on Iran, Iran is doing some cracking down of its own—on that oh-so-American symbol, the Barbie doll. The country's morality police have begun enforcing a Barbie ban issued in 1996. (Authorities blasted the doll's "destructive cultural and social consequences" at the time.) Reuters reports that the doll had been stocked on Tehran shops' shelves all the same, until about three weeks ago, when the morality police "came to our shop, asking us to remove all the Barbies," says one shop owner.

Of course, some Barbies are being tucked behind other toys, rather than removed all together, to keep up with demand. If seems that Sara and Dara, two government-OKed dolls released in 2002, haven't grabbed the hearts and minds of Iranian children. One mother says her daughter "prefers Barbies. She says Sara and Dara are ugly and fat." (Barbie, clearly, to the rescue.) But what should obedient parents buy for their kiddies instead? How about a toy soon to hit shelves: a mini RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone ... a replica of the one that went down in Iran last month. The AP notes that the manufacturer plans to send the US one of the models, in response to Washington's demand that the drone be returned. Iranian kids can get theirs for about $4.

MARKED: Saudi Man Arrested For Arranging Dates With Other Men!

Picture 33Last month, a 30-year-old man was arrested by the religious police in Saudi Arabia for using Facebook to pursue dates with other men, according to Gay Middle East. The man, whose name is not being released, was apprehended on December 23rd and is being held by the police in Dammam, on the Persian Gulf, where after what may be assumed to have been harsh interrogations by local authorities he confessed to arranging "obscenity acts" with members of his own sex.

Punishments for such acts in Saudi Arabia could include fines, flogging, imprisonment, and death. The severity of punishments for individual crimes are left to the discretion of Sunni religious authorities, and vary widely depending upon the identity of the offender. From GME: Conviction and severity of punishments depends on the social class, religion and citizenship of the accused, whereby non-western migrant workers receive usually harsher treatment than upper class Saudi citizens.

PANDERING: Pakistani Cricketer Draws 100K+ to Rally!

(AP) – More than 100,000 people rallied in support of Pakistani cricket legend and opposition politician Imran Khan in the southern city of Karachi today, further cementing his status as a rising force in politics. His message of cracking down on corruption and standing up to the US has found new resonance at a time when Pakistanis are fed up with the country's chronic insecurity and economic malaise. "I promise all you people that we'll create a new and respectable Pakistan that will never beg to anyone if you bring us in power," Khan told the cheering crowd.

The 59-year-old Khan entered politics 15 years ago when he founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or the Movement for Justice Party, but has struggled to translate his fame into votes. Recently however Khan has attracted prominent politicians to his party. National elections are not scheduled until 2013, but Khan and other oppositions have been pressing the government to hold earlier polls. He has been holding large rallies, which are especially popular with the country's urban middle class youth. Many of the people at today's rally were young Pakistanis wearing Western-style clothing.

TOPS: Roger Federer finally wins another title!

  Roger Federer Of Switzerland Celebrates

When Roger Federer kicked off the 2011 season with a win at the tournament in Qatar, his rabid fans – like me – were confident that he had regained the kind of form that won him a record 16 grand slam singles titles., reports Greg in Hollywood.

But it has been nine long months since then and we have watched our Roger drop down to number four in the world as Novak Djokovic has ascended to world domination.

So it is so sweet to see that Federer has won the Swiss Indoors title in Basel for the fifth time in six years. He beat Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-3 – the day after the Japanese player upset Djokovic in the semifinals.

Federer was playing his first event as a player ranked outside the top three since he won his first Wimbledon title in 2003.
The win was the 68th title of the Swiss superstar’s illustrious career.
