HIGH ALERT: World's Biggest Potheads? Kiwis, Aussies!
It
appears that our friends from Down Under are in fact up higher than
North Americans—a new study shows that Australians and New Zealanders
are the world's top pot smokers, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The Lancet found that 15% of Aussies and Kiwis ages 15-64 used some form of marijuana in 2009, as opposed to 11% of North Americans, and just 2.5% of people in Asia. Australians and New Zealanders also are the top users of amphetamines.
“Just look at the way we take alcohol as an integral part of everyday life. I think a lot of young people see cannabis in the same way that we see alcohol: as no big deal, as a drug just to use to have a good time,” said one of the study's researchers. The study also found that up to 203 million people around the world use marijuana annually, compared to up to 56 million who use amphetamines and 21 million who use cocaine or opiates such as heroin.

HEALTH: Pot Smokers Less Likely to Be Obese!
Marijuana users are less likely to be obese, according to a new study that would seem to fly in the face of the legendary munchies that are almost synonymous with pot. Researchers were so surprised by the results that they examined a second sample, only to come up with the same findings. Ultimately, the researchers used two national surveys involving a total of 50,000 people to come up with their results, LiveScience reports.
The study found that while 22% to 25% of non-tokers were obese, just 16% to 17% of those who self-reported using cannabis were obese. And obesity became less common the more frequently cannabis was used: Of those who used marijuana at least three days a week, just 14% were obese. The reason for the link is not clear. “I would be surprised that cannabis use is associated with a higher rate of physical activity, but this cannot be ruled out,” says one researcher, who notes that despite the results, marijuana use is not recommended as a weight-loss aid.

GROOVE: Paul and Frank Team Up to Legalize Pot!
Ron Paul and Barney Frank—surely Congress’ version of the Odd Couple—are set to introduce a bill today that would end the federal prohibition on marijuana, allowing states to legalize, tax, and regulate the drug. The bill would also “reprioritize federal resources” away from enforcing drug laws and fighting drug smuggling, Politico reports.
It’s the first time such legislation has ever been introduced in Congress, according to the Marijuana Policy Project. They’re touting the bill as “bipartisan legislation,” though Paul is the only Republican cosponsor—four other Democrats are onboard. The group doesn’t expect it to pass, but “it’s definitely going to get a serious debate,” a spokesman tells Reason, though “probably more in the media than on the floor of the House.”
