PEACE: Kim Jong Il Dead at 69!

Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died at the age of 69, according to state television. His death was was announced today a tearful announcer in black who said he had died from physical and mental over-work while on a train trip to a location outside Pyongyang, Reuters reports.

A later report from state-run media said the "Dear Leader" had died of heart failure. Kim, revered as a man of almost superhuman talents by state-run media but widely mocked in the West, inherited power after his father's death in 1994. His designated successor is believed to be his son Kim Jong Un, who is still in his 20s. Asian stock markets fell on the news of his death and South Korea placed its military on alert. With the transition to power in North Korea incomplete, "very unstable times" times could lie ahead for the diplomatically isolated nation, an analyst tells the BBC.

TRANS FLIGHT: PC Air To Employ 'Third-Gendered' Flight Attendants!

LadyboyattendantsPC Airways is about to become the first Thai airline to employ "ladyboys" as flight attendants. From The Bangkok Post: PC Air is due to commence its maiden commercial service, a charter flight for a tour group from Bangkok to Vientiane on Dec 24, and plans to inaugurate flights to two Chinese cities on a charter basis on Jan 23 next year.

The launch comes after a nine-month delay, which company reps said was occasioned by a desire to cash in on the glut of people traveling during the holiday season, rather than any financial shortfall. (To demonstrate his confidence in the airline's prospects, PC Air's sole proprietor, Peter Chan, elected not to lease the company's first airplane, an Airbus 310-222, and instead bought it outright for 1 billion Thai baht.)

WOOF: Move Over Tiger Mom, It's 'Wolf Dad'!

"Tiger Mother" Amy Chua may have been strict with her daughters, pushing academics ahead of sleepovers, but she's practically a kitten compared to "Wolf Dad" Xiao Baiyou, who has written a bestselling book in mainland China originally called Beat Them Into Peking University, reports NPR.

Xiao boasts of having more than 1,000 rules for his four children—from how to hold chopsticks to how to sleep and use a quilt. "If you don't follow the rules, then I must beat you," Xiao says. He uses a feather duster, however, not a belt. "From 3 to 12, kids are mainly animals," he says. "Their humanity and social nature still aren't complete. So you have to use Pavlovian methods to educate them." His usual punishment technique is to hit his kids with the feather duster on the back of the legs or their palms. All the children must watch, and if a younger sibling gets thwacked, then so does the elder, for being a poor role model. Xiao says it's not child abuse, and proudly points out that three of his four children got into Peking University, the Harvard of China. Not surprisingly, his children are less impressed by dad's tough style. "There may be some distance from the best results," says his 22-year-old son. Adds his wife: "Maybe they didn't need to be beaten quite so often."

REVOLTED: CEO of LGBT Asian Website Fridae.com Departs, Shuts Down Domain!

Stuart Koe, the founder of Fridae.com, one of the largest Asian websites for LGBTs, in existence since 2003, has shut its domain after conflicts with its board, he reports, in a blog post: KoeLeaving Fridae has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make. Having already devoted more than 10 years of my life to Fridae and the community, steering the company through several business cycles, and on the cusp of another phase of innovation and growth, I was prepared to commit another 20.

Unfortunately, the biggest obstacle I was faced with was an unsupportive Board, namely Joan Foo Mahony, Peter O’Connor, and Guillaume Levy-Lambert, who did not share the vision I had for Fridae. This made it difficult, if not impossible for me to continue in my role. The last few months of my time at Fridae has left me disappointed and very disillusioned.

For the past 6 months since my departure, I have tried but failed to resolve outstanding disputes with the existing management. Meanwhile, the Directors have exercised a clause to forfeit all the equity that was supposed to be allocated to the management as sweat equity. As it now stands, I no longer own a single share in the company I have invested most of my working life to build.

Koe says that the old site has been redirected to the domain Fridae.asia.

ORDERED: Malaysia Gay Arts Festival Banned, Called Threat to Public Order !

Malaysia
The “Sexual Independence” festival, a gay arts festival held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia since 2008 aimed at fighting discrimination has been canceled after several Muslim groups said they would protest, the AP reports: Earlier Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had described the event as “inappropriate” and a “waste of time,” according to Bernama.

Gay rights activists did not immediately respond. Earlier, they had said the festival was meant to counter widespread homophobia in this socially conservative Asian nation, where a young gay man received death threats last year after posting a YouTube clip defending his sexuality.

TRAGIC: Glee Singer's Dad Stabbed to Death!

Glee singer Charice Pempengco's father was killed after what police believe was a chance encounter with an angry drunk in her hometown in the Philippines. Police say Ricky Pempengco accidentally brushed up against a drunk man in a store, who stabbed him with an ice pick and fled, AP reports.

Pempengo was estranged from his 19-year-old daughter, who had a recurring role in Glee's second season and is on her way to becoming a megastar in Asia. Her parents split up when she was three, after what her mother says were fights caused by her father's drug abuse. “I loved him and I will still love him. He’s still my Dad after all," the singer posted on Twitter.

XTREME: Gay Malaysian to Defy Gov't With Wedding Banquet!

(AP) – A gay Malaysian pastor who plans to marry his American partner in New York pledged today to throw a wedding banquet in his Muslim-majority home country despite criticism by government politicians. Rev. Ouyang Wen Feng, an ordained minister who has mainly lived in the United States since 1998, says he wants more Malaysians to speak up for gay people after the country's Islamic affairs minister recently described same-sex unions as a form of "extremism."

"I still plan to have a Chinese wedding banquet in Kuala Lumpur next year," wrote the 41-year-old in an email to the AP. "I believe, I deserve at least this very right to share my joy with my friends by dining together, even in Malaysia." Malaysia's Islamic affairs minister last weekend said the publicity surrounding Ouyang's plan to marry worries authorities. "We agree with human rights, but such extremism that allows man and man to marry will create social problems."

TWISTED: Champion Gymnast Found Begging on Beijing's Streets!

The fate of one former gymnastics prodigy has sparked outrage in China, following revelations that he has been reduced to begging on the streets of Beijing. Zhang Shangwu, 28, was sent to a gymnastics academy at age 5, made the national team at age 12, and in 2001 won two gold medals at the World University Games, the Telegraph reports.

He was a shoo-in for the 2004 Olympic team, until an Achilles tendon injury forced him to retire—with a government payout of around $6,000. Zhang had no non-gymnastics education, and thanks to his injury lost even his job as a delivery boy. His grandfather soon had a brain hemorrhage, wiping out Zhang’s savings and forcing him to sell his medals for food.

Eventually he turned to theft, got arrested, and was released from jail this April. Since then, he’s been begging and sleeping in internet cafes. Critics say his plight is indicative of flaws in China’s national sports system. “With a world champion descending into such a life, who would want to be a gymnast in the future?” one former teammate asks.
