News Flash: ABC Hires Amanpour for This Week

I personally think it was a mistake for George Stephanopoulos to have taken the GMA job, He really doesn't fit in. The worst was that he had to give up the 'This Week' job. With all the possible canidates like Ted Koppel, Terry Moran, Jake Tapper, etc they decide to take an international twist? ABC you are making costly mistakes!

Christiane Amanpour has struck a deal with ABC News to become the new host of This Week in August. Though the CNN foreign correspondent is known for her international reporting, an ABC staffer says Amanpour feels confident about switching to domestic political reporting. She replaces George Stephanopoulos on the Sunday show, notes Talking Points Memo.

The ABC News memo from chief David Westin: "A highly respected journalist recognized around the world for her reporting, she brings to her new position a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as a deep commitment to bringing news of the world to the American people.

Christiane Amanpour isn't an obvious choice to host ABC’s Sunday gabfest This Week, but the network is confident in its choice. ABC says “Interviews and analysis about domestic politics and policies” will remain the show's focus, with the addition of an “international perspective.” Counting on a woman who speaks with an accent rather than a white male Washington insider to spearhead the change is a daring move, Michael Calderone writes for Politico.

“The reality is that we’re a news program on Sunday mornings," says This Week's executive producer. But when Amanpour starts her new gig in August, "the 2010 midterm races will be in full swing," Calderone notes. "It’s an unlikely moment for a host lacking experience in covering Washington politics to take the reins, and another reason the hire struck some staffers as coming out of left field."
