DEBUT! (92nd Street Y) The Wonder Years Reunion!

Before there was “Modern Family,” “That ‘70s Show” or “Freaks and Geeks,” there was “The Wonder Years”—a nostalgia-inducing take on the traditional family sitcom—and one of the most beloved sitcoms of the past thirty years. For six years America tuned in to follow the exploits of Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage), as he navigated adolescence in the most memorable of ways.

Moderated by acclaimed columnist and NPR “Fresh Air” critic David Bianculli, Fred Savage, Danica McKellar (girl-next-door Winnie Cooper) and Josh Saviano (Kevin’s BFF Paul Pfeiffer) discuss growing up on camera—crushes, first kisses, and all the other indignities that come from going from tween to teen in front of America.

(It's EVERYTHING w/ Bebe Sweetbriar) Guest: ANTIGONE RISING!

BeBe chats with Kristen Ellis- Henderson, founding member of ANTIGONE RISING (Kristen is also the wife of Glaad Prez, Sarah Ellis-Henderson) , the self-described alt-rock band composed of sisters Kristen Ellis-Henderson (bass guitar, vocals) and Cathy Henderson (lead guitar, vocals), Nini Camps (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Dena Tauriello (drums). Theyhave established themselves, through their musicianship, hard work and just plain likeability, as a force of musical nature. Quite an accomplishment for an all lesbian alt-country rock female band that while part of the growing chorus of out voices contributing to the slow walk toward country music embracing LGBT individuals, is still up against a predominantly conservative industry. BeBe and Kristen talk about the bands new EP Whiskey & Wine, Vol 2 released in early March, listen in on a few of the EPs tunes including current anthem "Game Changer", and explore why there aren't more self-sustaining all-female bands. www.antigonerising.com

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: The Children's Hour is a MUST-SEE and Great FIT at the Ballard Underground

Yes, There were Mean Girls in the 1930's Photo: Michael Brunk
by MK Scott

I confess I had never been to a Lesbian-Themed Play (It isn't like I have tried), but when that said-play is a bonafide American Classic written by the Controversial and Brilliant, Lillian Hellman that was turned into a Mildly-successful film led by 2 giants (Audrey Hepburn and Shirley Maclaine) in the code breaking 1960's (1961 to be exact). Of course, I am talking about the Children's Hour, that was stage by Arouet at the Ballard Underground this past weekend.

The last time I was at the Underground was for Ghostlight Theatricals production of 'Rope" another Early Gay themed play that was adapted in a Hollywood Film. There is something about the Underground and how you feel are in a speakeasy and transported into the time when being Gay or Lesbian was a mental illness.

The Children's Hour is a 1934 stage play written by Lillian Hellman. It is a drama set in an all-girls boarding school run by two women, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie. An angry student, Mary Tilford, runs away from the school and to avoid being sent back she tells her grandmother that the two headmistresses are having a lesbian affair. The accusation proceeds to destroy the women's careers, relationships and lives.

The play was first staged on Broadway at Maxine Elliott's Theatre in 1934, where it ran for over two years, and in 1936 it was put on at London's Gate Theatre Studio and Dublin's Gate Theatre. This was Hellman's first hit play. At the time, any mention of homosexuality on stage was illegal in New York State, but the play was such a success and so widely praised by critics that the rule was not enforced, according to Wiki.

She had a mezzo-soprano vocal range, and was a five-time Grammy Award winner. Debut! (BOLD MOVES) Maya tells boyfriend Rick that she is Transgender!

The setting was a mountain cabin where Rick Forrester (Jacob Young) had taken Maya (Karla Mosley) to propose marriage.

Although Rick had been in the dark, several people had already found out about Maya after her sister confided the news to the wrong person.

Maya had decided that she wouldn’t disclose the news to Rick until she was sure he was serious about having a future with her.She found out he was when Rick proposed marriage.

Rick was hurt that Maya had not confided in him sooner but in the end reassures her that he loves her.

‘I’m glad you told me,’ he says. ‘That’s what the woman I know would do. So what does it change? […] I just know that I love you and I want to spend my life with you. So please don’t walk away from me.’

While the couple are finding their way, there’s a more sinister part of the storyline going on as a media tycoon and tabloid publisher named Bill Spencer is preparing to out Maya to the rest of the world.

Spencer wants to create a scandal by creating sensationalistic headlines about Maya and Rick’s relationship with the hopes of damaging Rick professionally.

This leads to one of Spencer’s staff members saying: ‘What am I missing? Transgender people exist. This is not news.’STAY TUNED!

(Cooking w/ Drag Queens) - Trannika Rex!

From seasoning, to breading, to the way it’s fried- everyone seems to have strong feelings when it comes to fried chicken.

In the realm of legend is Colonel Sander’s secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, which Kentucky Fried Chicken claims is still the same recipe they use to this day.

The Colonel’s recipe is one of the most guarded secrets right up with with what's in Coca Cola or how to get a drag queen to a gig on time. But thanks to culinary sleuths on the Internet we may very well have figured it out.

Today we’re making fabulous fried chicken with some tasty twists on classic dipping sauces.

(SIFF 2015) INTER-view: Fetters' Exclusive with Tab Hunter, subject of "Tab Hunter Confidential"!

by Sara Michelle Fetters

Of all the visitors, filmmakers and dignitaries scheduled to appear during the SIFF festival, it's quite likely the one that gets me most excited is Hollywood icon Tab Hunter. At one point he was considered a studio golden boy, appearing in big budget musical productions like Damn Yankees and seeing his shirtless image plastered on posters around the globe while also having a number one single with the release of 'Young Love' in 1957. But by the 1960s the worm had turned, the days of the 'Studio System' on their way out, leading to the actor being outed by paparazzi and in many ways ending what had been a successful career as leading man and romantic lead.

He worked off and on for the next 20 years appearing mostly on television and in a series of lower budgeted B-movies, never again rising to the same iconic heights of his youth. It was meeting and working with legendary gonzo filmmaker John Waters on the 1980 underground classic Polyester that ultimately brought Hunter back into the limelight, however; the film giving him a first opportunity to truly be himself in front of the camera like no production before ever had. In 2005 he penned the eye-opening memoir Tab Hunter Confidential, the autobiography a beautifully well-written and intimately raw account of his life and times in Hollywood working as a closeted actor.

It took a little convincing, but celebrated director Jeffrey Schwarz (Vito, I Am Divine) was able to convince the actor that now was the time for a documentary based on his memoir. Sharing the title of the autobiography, the film, playing as a part of SIFF, is a revelation, digging even deeper into Hunter's story while also sharing fascinating interviews - both archival and new - with notable filmmakers and celebrities including Clint Eastwood, Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens, George Takei, Noah Wyle, Rock Hudson, John Waters and celebrated Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. It's magnificent, Schwarz composing a fascinating historical journey that's almost impossible not to be mesmerized by.

A week before his scheduled arrival at the film festival, I had a chance to speak with Hunter via phone. Here are some of the highlights from that conversation:

(Cooking w/ Drag Queens) - Shea Coulee!

We’re addicted to salsa verde. This green, garlicky Mexican sauce gets its green color not from green tomatoes, but from tomatillos, a green tangy fruit that’s closely related to cape gooseberries.

Now, tomatoes are in the same family as tomatillos, but a different genus.

You can put it with almost anything - it’s great with guacamole, on tacos, even in your eggs in the morning! You literally can eat green eggs and ham, and love it.

Today we are going to make Pork Enchiladas with Salsa Verde!

Joining us today is Shea Coulee-- a queen from Chicago who recently exploded on the scene, Shea is well known for taking odds and ends and turning it into high couture. Like Alaska, she finds trash and literally turns it into treasure.

(OUTscene NW) Re-view: Lakewood's MAME, Brings IT and More!

by MK Scott

I like everything about Mame, from the original Book by Patrick Dennis to the Glorious Film Classic of 'Auntie Mame" starring Rosalind Russell to the 1966 Broadway musical Mame is a musical with the book by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. Starring Angela Lansbury (I have the CD) and even the 1974 Film, based from the musical and Starring most of the original cast (Bea Arthur and Jane Connell) and Not with Angela Lansbury, but with Lucille Ball. The Best moments were when she wasn't singing (Save 'Bosom Buddies).I had never seen performed on stage before and when I heard that it was playing at my old stomping grounds of Lakewood Theatre in Lake Oswego, OR and directed by my old Pal, John Oules (Founder of Live On Stage). In fact I first met Oules, right here at Lakewood (known at the time as the Lake Oswego Community Theatre) back in 1990. I was already part of the family from doing Lighting at a previous show a year earlier.

So here I am back and ready to see Mame and am delighted to see Jennifer Goldsmith (seen in LOS's Spring Awakening in 2013) as Mame. Her performance in Act One was awkward as Mame goes from an IT Girl to broke and almost Human and then by Act 2 we see the Glamour and the Bitchiness of Mame that suits Goldsmith better as it did with Russell and Ball.

(Blank on Blank) John Coltrane on Giant Steps!

One afternoon in November 1966, Frank Kofsky took the train out to Long Island. He was about to spend the day with John Coltrane. Kofsky brought his tape recorder and what we get to hear is the conversation the two men had as they drove through town and made a few stops along the way.

Coltrane had moved to Huntington, New York with his wife Alice and their children in 1964. They lived in a modest house on a quiet, tree-lined street. It was a home to raise a family. Coltrane had just turned 40. He would die from liver cancer less than a year later.

During this episode Coltrane talks about moving to the country, setting up to practice, connecting with the sound of an instrument, Malcolm X, music as means of expressing that state of society, and how he wanted to change the world.

More Choice Coltrane
"I keep a horn on the piano and I have a horn in my bedroom."
"Music, being expression of the human heart or the human being itself, does express just what is happening."
"In any situation that we find in our lives, when there’s something we feel should be better, we must exert effort to try and make it better."
