(Behind the Scenes) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (FINAL)!

by Brad Liberti

3: It's The Magic Number

"With Season Three I wanted to show (the guys) more in their professional settings," says Acord. He's currently neck deep in post-production work, preparing the show for its fall premiere, but with the end almost in site, and with a successful screening of the first episode at the Hot As Hell Web Series Festival in Palm Springs behind him, he can't help but anxiously await the day that everyone can see what he and his team have been working so hard on.

Seasons One and Two may have been about getting to know the Old Dogs and what it is exactly that makes them tick, but these next 8 episodes, according to the writer, "will explore how each man is also defined by his chosen profession." That means fans will get a chance to see Nathan in his element, especially during a Howard Hawks-worthy office scene involving Acord, Hart, Gari, and newcomer, Rutanya Alda, that is destined to be an ODNT classic (The Mommie Dearest star, who is based in NYC, happily agreed to be part of the series because of the "universal questions" that it raises about life and love and sex, and calls the experience "great.")

They can also expect to see another side of Brad King this season, after an unforeseen crisis forces the one-time musician to finally examine his aptitude for anything other than penis-play. For his part, Bonnem relished the chance to "expose another layer of the character"-- as did Olson, whose Muscles goes through a bit of his own existential crisis when confronted with the very real concept of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. And Ross... well, let's just say that his professional woes are what brings out the beast in Nathan, not to mention the comedy pro in David Pevsner, who even has a scene opposite Absolutely Fabulous star and improv legend, Mo Gaffney. (According to Pevsner, "(Gaffney's) so damn funny. It was great to be the straight man to her... no pun intended.")

(Behind the Scenes) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 5)!

by Brad Liberti

"Nathan Adler was actually a name I'd carried around for a while," Acord says as our chat finally turns to his own alter ego, ODNT's big-hearted, fabulously follicled leading man. "I knew I was going to play him -- although I did toy with the idea of playing Brad for a while -- and I didn't want him to be an actor, because I didn't want an actor playing an actor, especially as the lead."

For Leon that would have felt way too similar to another über-buzzy former HBO series about four close buds living in Lalaland: Entourage. But even at the risk of comparisons to the bro-ified version of Sex and the City, the actor was sure that he wanted Nathan to be in show business, or, more importantly, "to have access to actors and musicians." So having Adler own a talent agency seemed like the most reasonable bet -- provided that one thing be made quite clear: "Arvin, in the early days, thought Nathan should be a bit meaner, be more of an agent like [Ari Gold on Entourage], and I was like, 'No, we see that all the time. Let's make him a nice agent -- even if they don't really exist.'"

We share a laugh, but Acord makes it quite clear that his own experience with representation hasn't been nearly as malevolent. Instead the longtime actor characterizes it as much more "uneventful" -- occasionally helpful in a decidedly hands-off, anti-Nathan sort of way, which means no late-night counseling sessions, no open office hours, and absolutely no putting their asses on the line for him, all of which Adler has done simply for Ross Stein alone (especially this upcoming season, which finds the tightly wound thespian straddling the edge of professional glory -- or a nervous breakdown, depending on how you look at it -- when certain proclivities of his are made public).

(Behind the Scenes) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 4)!

by Brad Liberti

A broad's gotta know when to be broad

"The times when I've had to give up control or not get my way have actually been good for the show," Leon reveals to me during our third conversation. He's either being completely sincere or employing some truly award-worthy acting, but even though as a writer myself, I'd cut a bitch if they got too comfortable fiddling with my content, I'm inclined to believe the former. That's because I've had the privilege of spending some time on the planet known as Arvin Bautista, in which earthly fears like chaos, time constraints, and grumpy extras exist as little more than distant twinkling stars. Acord says it best: "There's something about Arvin that's so calming; he's so proactive; he arrives on set having already examined mentally every scene, every shot, everything from every angle that he seems totally unflappable, and when you tell him that, he's like, Oh please I just made it up as I went along!"

(BEHIND the SCENES) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series Part 3!

by Brad Liberti

Something's missing...

Amanda Gari doesn't do supporting actress. Yes, she's been a fiercely loyal friend to Leon Acord ever since they first met at her audition for 'Carved In Stone' some 5 years ago (Gari, a triple threat who was literally raised on the stage as the daughter of actor and artist, Roberto Gari, and the granddaughter of radio personality and all around performer, Eddie Cantor, was trying out for the part of Judy Garland, which she of course landed, having successfully channeled the gay icon onstage two previous times). And yes, she has perfectly embodied Nathan's quick as a wink assistant/Girl Friday, Lydia Lasker, since Season 1... but if you're going to write a part for her - as Mr. Acord did - you better expect some first class scene stealing.

"I'd written about 5 episodes before I started sharing my scripts with a couple of people," Leon recalls, "and one of the first comments I got back actually from Laurence was, Yeah, it's a gay show, but you need a woman in the show... So I thought, Lydia Lasker... Amanda Abel! - which was her name at the time... it was just immediate and very close to who she is: Lydia's a cabaret singer, Amanda is a cabaret singer. Lydia is loyal and trustworthy and fabulous, and so is Amanda."

For her part, Gari's just happy to have inspired a character who resonates so deeply with the fans... "It's funny because obviously, I'm not one of the leads and yet my part was written for me and I'm very touched and honored by that," she admits. "I love (the fact) that a lot of our fans continue to request to see more of her and I tell Leon often that he needs to get writing!"

(Behind the Scenes) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 2)!

by Brad Liberti

Whether you love HBO's groundbreaking millennial hit or simply prefer to hate on it for its deference to conspicuous consumption, there's no denying that Sex and the City was, and still remains, a cultural force to be reckoned with. Like All in the Family, Cheers, and Seinfeld, its influence on episodic ensemble comedy is so expansive that a writer of this stuff would be lying if he or she said the show had no bearing on their work. Leon Acord is not a liar. "An inspiration that I will cop to -- and I hope it doesn't get me sued, because we do get compared to the show a lot -- is Sex and the City."

He reveals, "I remember seeing the Sex and the City movie, and at the end of it, Samantha is turning 50 and decides to break up with her boyfriend and go back to her single life, and I remember watching the movie and having sort of this moment of, like, 'Oh, that's so sad. She's 50 and single.' And then I checked myself before I wrecked myself and went, 'Wait a minute. You're not far from 50. Do you think it's sad?'"

Of course, things were slightly different for the actor/writer, who'd been in a committed relationship for 20-plus years, but as any gay man -- hell, anybody, for that matter -- over 40 and living in Los Angeles will tell you, age can be way more than just a number here. "In San Francisco gays of a certain age are still kind of marginalized, but there is this feeling of, 'They're the elders; they're the history bearers,'" Acord explains. "There is a kind of respect for older gay men that does not exist in L.A. L.A doesn't want to know from history -- gay, straight, or otherwise."

(BEHIND the SCENES) The Oral History of a 'Gay' Web Series (Part 1)!

by Brad Liberti

It's a typically sun-drenched early Sunday afternoon in June the first time we chat. The last of the gloom has burned off -- at least from where I sit, in Hollywood, though he'll tell me that from his front porch (about 12 miles due west), he can still see some scattered grey lingering on its way back to sea.

Leon Acord isn't exactly feeling perky today. No, he's not pulling diva rank because he's the writer, star, producer, and occasional director of his very own wildly successful Web series (Old Dogs & New Tricks, available exclusively on Wolfe Video and at OldDogsNewTricksTheSeries.com). Nor is he kvetching because the show -- which follows the lives of four gay men over the age of 40 trying to navigate life and love in L.A. -- is gearing up to premiere its highly anticipated third season on Nov. 12, and while it most certainly takes a village, the buck ultimately stops with him. The truth of the matter is that he's just a little tired.

(BEHIND the SCENES) MK on the set of Day Drunk Gays!

Mark knows he is a STAR!
by MK Scott

On this weeks episode on 'DAY DRUNK GAYS', I was on the set back in early April as I observed the taping of this episode and the following.

I arrived at the LA home of star, Mark Cirillo (The Seminarian, Men next Door) and was welcomed at the door by Mark. Crew was in the kitchen as 3 (Ean, Mark and Bryce) out of the 4 cast members were drinking their Mimosas at the Breakfast Bar.

Once that scene was over, it was a just short downtime as they changed the lighting and camera angles to the next episode when the Full cast (with Mike Callahan) are sitting around the dinner table, in a very funny scene. Stay Tuned!

(Gay WEDDINGS) Inside Paul and Jeff's Lavish Wedding!

Two of the Proposition 8 plaintiffs tied the knot at a lavish wedding at the Beverly Hilton on the anniversary of the historic ruling.

2008 was a life-changing year for Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo. It was the year that the couple decided they wanted to get married, and it was also the year that California voters passed Proposition 8, banning marriage for same-sex couples. But rather than spend a year or two picking centerpieces and creating a registry, Jeff and Paul spent the next five years making their way from Federal District Court in California to the U.S. Supreme Court, as lawyers Theodore B. Olson and David Boies argued for marriage equality for all couples. And on June 28th, 2013, Proposition 8 was declared unconstitutional. Mere hours later, Paul and Jeff were married in a legal ceremony by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "The only thing missing that day was our family," Jeff exclusively tells Brides. So a few months later, he and Paul decided that they needed to celebrate the momentous decision — and their love for one another — in the most deserving of ways: with a wedding!

(OUTscene AMERICA) MK gives Behind the Scenes Scoop about tonight's Wife Swap with Rivers Vs. Palin!

by MK Scott

During my recent trip to LA this past May, I was all set to join our pal, Tony Tripoli for my 2nd E! Studio visit at a taping of Joan River's Weekly chatfest, Fashion Police.

What I learned was that I needed to sign a release for a second show, besides Fashion Police. That second show was ABC's Celebrity Wife Swap and  that Bristol Palin had switched places with Mellissa Rivers.

I was sitting just 2 rows behind Bristol as cameras were aiming towards her as she is watching the taping of Fashion Police. Bristol looked thinner in person and was sitting next to one of  Melissa's Gay friends. This should be Fun! (Update; it was discussed why, Bristol was not standing in the sidelines to take Melissa's place as EP/Floor Director, she claimed she was uncomfortable doing that).

Bristol left Mid-way through the taping, and Joan actually came and chatted with the
invited audience. I got to chat with her this time, despite meeting her in December 2011. Joan was Gracious and posed for a photo.

Later the special Guest, Brad Goreski (It's Brad, Brad World) came on and later I ran to catch up to him as he was exiting, I previously heard his reputation  for being a Diva which later became true, or perhaps it was his publicist who declined my card to schedule an interview.

So, Who was the Biggest Diva of the Night? Bristol, Joan or Brad? It was a toss up between Bristol Vs. Brad.

Update: I did spot me in the FP scene in the studio audience with my black and bright green striped shirting standing out.

(OUTscene AMERICA) Introducing the Man Dress!

Jwanderson
It Brit design JW Anderson's latest collection is all about gender-bending.

Writes Daniel Tehrani at OUT:The inspiration for his collection, titled Mathematics of Love, was the "examination of bourgeois kinkyness and boudoir perversity" -- the result, men in strapless camel bustiers, frilled bloomer-shorts, doctors' gowns complete with what looks like dishwashing gloves, a powder blue robe and kinky leather pleated dresses. Wearable? Not quite. Commercial? Definitely not, but it is certainly conceptual......Style.Com writer Jo Ann-Furniss says "write off Anderson as a mere provocateur at your peril; his agenda is more complex than that. The effeminacy of this collection—a kind of put-together sixties jolie madame made into a twisted jolie monsieur; think Séverine in Belle de Jour crossed with some of her kinky fantasy coachmen—is intended to reconfigure both menswear and womenswear, and to give a kick up the arse to the stale state of much of men's fashion at the moment."

In fact, Anderson is a part of a bigger movement to bring originality into the men's dress-code.
