(TIME Warp) San Francisco Gay Pride in the 70's, A RETROSPECTIVE!
Writes Ron Williams of this clip chronicling Gay Pride parades in San Francisco from 1970-80:
"Charles Roseberry is an early gay documentary filmmaker in 8 mm and Super 8 mm work that was used in the opening sequence of old Castro Street in the 'Milk' film. At 83, Charles is still practicing his talents as an film editor and videographer. This film will stir up those old Disco memories and get your blood pumping."

(HOTEL SPONSOR) San Francisco's Kensington Park Hotel has Old Gothic Style!
MKS
|
I made it to my first night in San Francisco, and had a little bit of Kismet, because in a few short days I will be San Diego and staying in the Affluent neighborhood of Kensington.
The Hotel is a gorgeous 1925 Gothic style building. The stylish lobby features hand-painted ceilings, modern artwork, and serves complimentary tea and sherry, nightly to hotel guests.
I first noticed the sculpture of a Horse in the Lobby.

STOP: Gay California Teen Kills Himself After Years of Bullying!
The Sacramento Bee has yet another awful story of a gay teen whose suicide on New Year's Day appears to have years of homophobic bullying as its root cause.
The paper reports:In the early hours of New Year's Day, Jeffrey hanged himself in the front entrance to his family's home in a tony Granite Bay neighborhood. He was 18 years old.
Since that day, his parents have searched their hearts and minds for answers. Though Jeffrey, who was gay, had recently ended a relationship and had been treated for depression, they believe something more insidious put him on the path toward suicide. They are convinced that a lifetime of taunts and bullying contributed to his decision to take his own life.

WET Soggy day for S.F.'s Veterans Day parade!
For the first time, the Gay Freedom Day Marching Band led the San Francisco Veterans parade, which also included Girl Scouts and high school ROTC students, Reports the SF Chronicle.
The parade attracted only a handful of spectators as it wound up Market Street and over to City Hall. Parade Marshal Chairman Glen Raswyck said it was the first time the parade had been held on a weekday.
Passers-by stopped to look and clap for the line of cars, high school bands and veterans.
Jeremy George, who recently moved to the United States, came to Market Street dressed in the blue uniform of the British Royal Air Force Police, in which he served for several years. "I thought I'd come down and pay my respects," he said, adding that he hoped to join the parade.
Veterans from World War II through the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan participated, and newly elected Mayor Ed Lee strolled along the route, waving to the crowds who clapped as he passed.

OUT: California Lawmaker Comes Out of the Closet, Cites Gay Bullying!
Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani tells the Stockton Record that she's gay: Galgiani, D-Livingston, said that by coming out now, she hopes to send a positive message to young people who are struggling to come to terms with their sexual identity.
"It sickens me that young people would think about taking their lives because of who they are," Galgiani said. Galgiani, 47, said it was not until well into adulthood, after she was elected to represent the 17th Assembly District in 2006, that she knew she was gay.

The Sacramento Bee adds: Galgiani's spokesman confirmed the report, saying the statement came during an interview on high-speed rail and other issues.
Galgiani's announcement brings the total number of openly gay state lawmakers to eight. Her addition would make the Legislature's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus, formed in 2002, the country's largest caucus recognizing openly gay legislators in the country, according to the gay rights advocacy group Equality California. Galgiani, who is termed out of the Assembly next year, is planning to run for a competitive Senate seat in the Central Valley next year.

VICTORY: Bid to Repeal Gay History Law in California Fails!
A win for gay rights advocates in California: Opponents hoped to repeal a new law that requires public schools to teach about the contributions of gay people, but they failed to get enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. That means the law will take effect as planned in January.
Still, gay rights groups expect a bigger battle against the law to be waged for the November 2012 ballot. "In the end, 90 days was too short a time to accomplish such a large task," the Stop SB48 group told supporters in an email today, the deadline for signatures. "While we did not overturn this very bad law, we built a small army of dedicated volunteers that collected an incredible amount of signatures. There will be a next battle." The SDGLN site has the full email.

QUIT: Equality California Executive Director Roland Palencia Resigns After Three Months!
Roland Palencia, who began his tenure as Executive Director of Equality California on July 5, succeeding former head Geoff Kors, will step down as of Friday, October 14, the organization reports.
Reports Karen Ocamb of LGBT POV: When asked why he was stepping down, Palencia hesitated. He then agreed to go through with the interview for Frontiers, a portion of which will be posted immediately on FrontiersLA.com
Palencia is very concerned about Equality California as an organization: “I want to make sure that everyone supports the organization. This is the time for all of us to rally and support Equality California. I have seen how this organization literally changes lives. It is a community asset and we have to keep our eye on the prize.”

CUT: Calif. Bans Circumcision Bans!
The state of California has snipped San Francisco's uppity bid to erect a ban on circumcision. Any such ban is now banned in a law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. Ban backers had collected nearly 8,000 signatures to put the measure to a vote in the city in November, arguing that circumcision is unnecessary surgery that can be dangerous. The issue was pretty much moot, even before the new state law, because a judge had already blocked the ballot measure that stirred controversy among Jews, Muslims, and many in the medical community. The state law was introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who told the Los Angeles Times that the measure, signed yesterday, would "protect parental rights and liberties."
