(OUTview AMERICA) INTER-view: Jackie Beat Wants YOU to Root for Her At Battle of the Bitches!

 by MK Scott

I must confess I have been a Jackie Beat Fan since the early 90's from the Wigstock Movie and a little 90's Indie Comedy called GRIEF. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform LIVE at ReBar a few years back where I said I would love an interview and now finally the timing was great to chat up her upcoming Battle of the Bitches with the Hirlarious, Sherry Vine for ONE Night Only. I chatted with Jackie by email.

(OUTview AMERICA) CLASSIC: MK's 2010 chat with Caitlyn's new 'Pal', Candis Cayne!

Cayne waves to the crowd at the 2010 Vancity Pride                MKS
by MK Scott

This is an interview I did with Candis Cayne in 2010, actually 5 yrs ago this week. Candis was chosen to be a Grand Marshal for the Vancouver BC Pride and we had met previously that January in West Hollywood at her then-weekly show at the Abbey. These days she is still in demand and even Laverne Cox has given Cayne raves for opening the door for Trans Actresses in Hollywood. Now, Cayne is" hanging and being a mentor" to Caitlyn Jenner and will be a regular on the E! Series, "I am Cait" airing tonight. Here is my 2010 interview, sorry for the quality, I was using my camera phone.

(OUTview AMERICA) INTER-view: MK Chats with the Woman behind WOLFE VIDEO on 30 years of Change and Progress!

WOLFE
by MK  Scott

For the past 30 years, the Queer Film mail-order market has changed, and no other company has changed in for the times and had a major contribution to change in the LGBT Community, has been Wolfe Video and its founder, Kathy Wolfe.

Kathy began Wolfe Video as a small mail order distribution outlet serving a largely untapped audience of lesbians and gay men eager for films that spoke to their own lives. Now active in both the film distribution and releasing arenas, Wolfe enjoys a strong presence in the marketplace as the most successful distributor of independent, studio-produced and “self-authored” gay and lesbian themed film, video and DVD products. Kathy has been honored by the National Organization for Women as a recipient of its “Excellence in Media Award,” by Forbes Magazine as an “Up and Comer,” and by The Advocate as a “Hollywood Star Player.” In her spare time, Kathy is an avid restorer of historic buildings; an adventurous traveler; and a collector of almost everything.I was delighted to chat with this true Pioneer this past week!

(OUTview AMERICA) MK INTER-views Mark Strano, Star and Writer of TIGER ORANGE, Now on DVD!

Wolfe
by MK Scott

Wolfe Video's gay drama TIGER ORANGE is available TODAY! After premiering at Outfest in 2014 (winning the Grand Jury award for best actor) and completing a successful and award-winning festival tour, this heartfelt small town drama is being released by Wolfe Video in celebration of 2015 summer gay pride events and festivals. I saw this at the 2014 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival last fall and was one of the good ones. The script was unique and the performances were incredible about 2 Gay Brothers that couldn't be more different than Night and Day. Frankie Valenti aka former adult star Johnny Hazzard plays the Out and Proud and Aggressive brother, while Mark Strano plays the submissive Gay, but traditional brother playing it straight in a small town that he feels content and a responsibility to carry on the Family legacy. I chatted with Strano who shares more insight on the story and its characters.

(OUTview AMERICA) “54: The Director’s Cut” – Interview with Mark Christopher!

Lionsgate
by Sara Michelle Fetters

Film critics, snobs and know-it-all cineastes are more than likely familiar with the saga of writer/director Mark Christopher and his 1998 opus 54. A drama inspired by the titular New York nightclub, loosely mixing fact and fiction as it told the story of the rise and fall of a teenage bartender who came of age in the venue just about as everything was on the verge of falling apart, the movie was buzzed to be something special, a potential Oscar-frontrunner with a revolutionary performance from Austin Powers and Wayne’s World comedian Mike Myers.

And none of it came to pass. The Miramax release was the victim of over 40 minutes of reshoots and re-edits, Harvey Weinstein, producing alongside his brother Bob, insisting Christopher make a number of changes before the film’s late August release. Instead of a hard-edged morality tale of youth in revolt, the story was shifted to become more of a standard, soapy love triangle, the studio demanding starlet Neve Campbell – currently hot thanks to her role in the Scream films – become a much larger presence than the filmmaker had initially intended.

For 17 years Christopher fought to have his original version restored. Considering the film, while a massive critical and commercial failure, had somehow managed to amass a rather large cult, primarily LGBT following, he always knew the possibility for this to happen was there, even if the passage of time callously and coldly worked against him. But when Disney finally parted with Miramax and a new regime free from both the Mouse House and the Weinstein brothers yoke took control, Christopher took it as a sign his day had finally come, calculating that they’d grant him back access to 54 allowing him to return things back to how they should have been once upon a time.

The new film is a revelation. Campbell’s soap opera ingénue Julie Black is an ethereal background character as she always should have been, while the real love triangle ends up concerning star struck New Jersey teen Shane O’Shea (Ryan Phillippe) and Studio 54 newlyweds Greg Randazzo (Breckin Meyer) and his fiery wife Anita (Salma Hayek). Club owner Steve Rubell (Myers, in an electrifying performance) is an even more ferocious yet pitiable presence, while the grounded tragic realism central to O’Shea’s rise and fall feels far more authentic and much less melodramatic than it did in the original release version. All-in-all, it’s a completely different motion picture, and one definitely worth seeing.

54: The Director’s Cut made its Seattle premier during a star-studded gala screening as part of this year’s Seattle International Film Festival. It was followed up by a Studio 54-themed party at a venue near the University of Washington, writer/director Mark Christopher, along with a secretive list of celebrities, attending. Additionally, the film is received an HD Digital release on June 2, 2015.

(OUTview TV) INTER-view: Alec Mapa Talks "BABY DADDY": His new Film Debuting on SHOWTIME This Friday!

(c) WANG
From the 2014 Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival:

by MK Scott

My association with Alec Mapa goes back 7 years and it had been over a year since I last saw him in-person. When I heard Alec was going to be a guest and show his documentary/Concert film Baby Daddy at SLGFF, I jumped at the chance to bring my camera man, Zheng to Seattle's NW Film Forum as shared some laughs and the importance of Fatherhood.

The film,  Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, based on Mapa's titular one-man show, which covers much of Mapa's personal life, including his decision (along with husband Jamie Hebert) to adopt a child. You’ll laugh and even cry as “America’s Gaysian Sweetheart” mixes life stories with his signature brand of sass.

First, take a look at the Trailer!

(SIFF 2015) INTER-view: Fetters' Exclusive with Tab Hunter, subject of "Tab Hunter Confidential"!

by Sara Michelle Fetters

Of all the visitors, filmmakers and dignitaries scheduled to appear during the SIFF festival, it's quite likely the one that gets me most excited is Hollywood icon Tab Hunter. At one point he was considered a studio golden boy, appearing in big budget musical productions like Damn Yankees and seeing his shirtless image plastered on posters around the globe while also having a number one single with the release of 'Young Love' in 1957. But by the 1960s the worm had turned, the days of the 'Studio System' on their way out, leading to the actor being outed by paparazzi and in many ways ending what had been a successful career as leading man and romantic lead.

He worked off and on for the next 20 years appearing mostly on television and in a series of lower budgeted B-movies, never again rising to the same iconic heights of his youth. It was meeting and working with legendary gonzo filmmaker John Waters on the 1980 underground classic Polyester that ultimately brought Hunter back into the limelight, however; the film giving him a first opportunity to truly be himself in front of the camera like no production before ever had. In 2005 he penned the eye-opening memoir Tab Hunter Confidential, the autobiography a beautifully well-written and intimately raw account of his life and times in Hollywood working as a closeted actor.

It took a little convincing, but celebrated director Jeffrey Schwarz (Vito, I Am Divine) was able to convince the actor that now was the time for a documentary based on his memoir. Sharing the title of the autobiography, the film, playing as a part of SIFF, is a revelation, digging even deeper into Hunter's story while also sharing fascinating interviews - both archival and new - with notable filmmakers and celebrities including Clint Eastwood, Debbie Reynolds, Connie Stevens, George Takei, Noah Wyle, Rock Hudson, John Waters and celebrated Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. It's magnificent, Schwarz composing a fascinating historical journey that's almost impossible not to be mesmerized by.

A week before his scheduled arrival at the film festival, I had a chance to speak with Hunter via phone. Here are some of the highlights from that conversation:

(OUTscene AMERICA) INTER-view: MK gets the DISH from Boystown Season 3 author, Jake Biondi!

by MK Scott

‘BOYSTOWN’ series author Jake Biondi  has released the highly-anticipated THIRD book of his ‘BOYSTOWN’ series TODAY! .

The ‘BOYSTOWN’ series began as an online story released in installments, each ending with a cliffhanger.  November 2013, the first ten ‘episodes’ were published in book form as ‘BOYSTOWN Season One.’ Ending in spectacular cliffhanger, ‘Season One’ left the lives of several main characters in peril. Readers were left wondering who would survive and what would happen next. BOYSTOWN Season Two’ released in June 2014 answered readers’ questions and, of course, provided even more twists and turns for its fans. In Season Three it will offer even more twists and turns. I chatted with Biondi Via Facebook.

(OUTscene AMERICA) INTER-view: Is Faye Dunaway Trying to Hijack Rutanya Alda’s Mommie Dearest Diaries?

by Leon Acord

OK, so maybe it took her a while to catch on.

After all, she’s not just “Carol Ann.” Veteran character actress Rutanya Alda has played dozens and dozens of roles in her career, in such famous films as The Deer Hunter, Last Exit to Brooklyn, When a Stranger Calls and the cult hit Amityville II, as well as guest roles in almost every TV show that’s shot in New York City since the mid-1980s [and, in theinterest of full disclosure, a recent guest-starring stint on my web series Old Dogs & New Tricks].

But it wasn’t until May 11, 2013, as actress Rutanya Alda was being honored at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre, that she realized Mommie Dearest—the Faye Dunaway vehicle in which Alda had played Joan Crawford’s faithful maid—had a huge gay cult following.

She had decided to read snippets from the diary she had kept during production of the infamous 1981 film (which Dunaway which notoriously refused to discuss) at the event.  She was so taken by the enthusiastic response that she then began thinking it might make a good book!

Jump ahead two years. Alda’s “Mommie Dearest Diaries” is set for publication in early summer. And who should call Ms. Alda’s agent but Ms. Dunaway herself, asking if Rutanya would “collaborate” (for an acknowledgement but no pay) with Dunaway on her own book about Mommie Dearest, which Dunaway recently decided to write.

Coincidence? Given Dunaway’s fury whenever asked about the film (till now)—and the fact the two actors haven’t spoken since they shot their final scene over 30 year ago—it does seem rather odd. Did Dunaway catch wind of Alda’s book? And how? Is this a pre-emptive strike? An attempt at damage control?

I talked with Rutanya as soon as I saw the news!

(Bebe Sweetbriar) RAIN DOVE & CORY WADE: Breaking the Gender Binary in Fashion!

Rain Dove in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

By BeBe Sweetbriar

The first ever Queer Fashion Week continues the presentation of the notion of a genderless fashion world when it takes center stage in Oakland, California April 16-19 . fiveTEN Oakland Events, producer of the event, states its mission of Queer Fashion Week is to showcase fashion creations for all types of bodies and genders. Rain Dove and Cory Wade are two Celebrity Models on board for Queer Fashion Week who continually go against the gender binary as fashion models and people. I had an opportunity to visit with both of these pioneers to talk about their experiences as gender fluid and androgynous models and breaking the gender binary in the fashion world.

No secret, the fashion industry has for a long time propelled the notion that women are meant to be soft, beautiful and sensual and men are built to be strong, distinguished and veral by clothing them on the runway and print advertisements in attire that helps carry that message home to the public. Men and women who don’t fit the gender binary descriptives have often found it hard to find a place in the fashion industry as a commercial model, and thus, in a domino effect, many men and women in the public have found it hard to find themselves in commercial advertisement marketed to them. But, I think it safe to say “thangs be a changing”.

(WHITE PARTY 2015) Frankie Grande: A GAY LATINO OPRAH?

by David Luc Nguyen (Teriyaki Temple)

Outview’s David Luc Nguyen (aka Teriyaki Temple) catches up with the Frankie Grande: Social Media Bad Boy, TV personality ('Big Brother 16'), Broadway star (Rock of Ages) and Big Bro of Reigning Pop-Princess (Ariana Grande). They chat about everything from meeting Madonna, his favorite moments from the past year, his thoughts on the new Pope and gushes about his upcoming appearance as this year’s Ambassador at White Party Palm Springs where he will co-host with this year’s White Party Queen Kelly Osborne! Unless you've been completely out of the loop or perhaps living under a rock (of ages) you have probably heard of Frankie Grande.

Prior to this interview I admit I only knew of him by several nicknames including:
o 'Ariana Grande's Gay older brother'
o 'That Gay guy on 'Big Brother 16' that was always snuggling with the hot straight guy'
o 'One of YouTube's Gay Dude Channel hosts'
o 'That pretty boy that hosted the Grammy Awards Red Carpet half-naked'
o 'Franz from Rock of Ages on Broadway'

Now take all of those nicknames and couple them with the bleach blonde hair (with purple tips), a tanned perfect body (who posts scantily clad pictures of himself on “topless Tuesdays”), his sister is with a pop-star with “alleged” diva tendencies (btw totally not true) and add in an outrageous (yet endearing) personality on his hugely popular YouTube channel, what conclusion about this stranger would you make? After I scratched the surface I came to the conclusion. . . .

Make sure to check out my “pink box mash-up” below where I double Oprah and Frankie side by side bento box style!
