(OSCARS 2015) Academy Awards - Recap!

PHOTO: Mark Suban / ©A.M.P.A.S.

by Sara Michelle Fetters

During last Sunday’s 87th annual Academy Awards telecast, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Broadway-set dramatic comedy Birdman starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis proved to be the night’s big winner. The film was an obvious favorite of the Academy, nominated in nine categories and taking home Oscars in four of them for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and for Emmanuel Lubezki’s memorable cinematography (his second in row, winning last year for Gravity as well).

“All the people that were behind this film was really heroes because the idea was really crazy,” said an obviously emotional Iñárritu. “A script that started with a middle-aged man, interior dressing room, cross-legged, floating, can go anywhere, and we are here. I don’t know how that happened but it happened. And, anyway, I just really want to thank everybody.”

(MK's Pic(k) of the Week) NW Fave, Mark Duplass!

Mark Duplass, 38, is an  film director, film producer, actor, musician and screenwriter. He is the brother of director, writer, and actor Jay Duplass.

Duplass has written, directed, and produced several feature films with his brother Jay Duplass. In 2005, he wrote and produced The Puffy Chair with his brother, in addition to portraying one of the main characters.

The two brothers later wrote, directed, and produced the films Baghead (2008) and Cyrus (2010) together and have a unique style which consists of a great deal of ad-libbing off of the original script, shooting a number of takes, and editing scenes down 15 to 20 times. Their films Jeff, Who Lives at Home and The Do-Deca-Pentathlon were released in 2012. He starred in the FX comedy television series The League, with his wife, Katie Aselton.

He is a NW favorite, and has starred in Seattle based films, My Sister's Sister, Creep and Safety Not Guaranteed.

In 2015, the HBO series Togetherness debuted, which was created by and stars Duplass. That same year, Duplass co-starred with Evan Peters and Olivia Wilde in David Gelb's thriller film The Lazarus Effect.

(JESSE on the BRINK) The World's Last Pen Pals!

by Jesse Archer

In 1988, I wrote to the Australian consulate fishing for a pen pal. I was in love with marsupials, and I also hated my life and constantly thought of far-flung lands, far away from the war zone of Fowler Junior High. I received my very first letter from Merryn in March of that same year, and we wrote furiously back and forth across the Pacific, sometimes every single day. I couldn't wait to race home after school because opening the mailbox to find her letters was the highlight of my day.

Reading about life on a 2,580-acre sheep farm in Armidale, NSW gave me a glimpse outside the hell I was living and allowed me to imagine I might one day escape. She wrote about riding horses past roos, gum trees and noisy galahs, and always how Presbyterian Ladies College was screwing her up. She'd nobly try to convince me that working at McDonalds was not uncool in Oz, or that I shouldn't commit suicide but wait and do it later because just think how much worse life will be at like age 24. We'd sign our letters "friends forever" and I'd receive awesome mix tapes with songs by stars no American had heard of: Johnny Diesel, Jason Donovan, Bros, Kylie Mole and Minogue…

(SHOWcase) Support VJ Band's Music Video, 'THE BONES OF RICHARD III'!

Photo: Karla Eskro
To promote the launch of VJ Band's brand New CD "Living In A Blue State" the group is making its very first Music Video in collaboration with Northwest Filmmaker Sebastien Scandiuzzi (of Pressing Pictures); The band's first single, an original tune "The Bones of Richard III" (Music & Lyrics by VJ) is a fun, rollicking waltz that expresses the excitement of finding the bones of the long lost monarch (and subject of Shakespeare's tragic play). The storyboard (frame-by-frame drawing of the four-and-a-half-minute video) shows the Band performing the song -- featuring a harmonic duet by Victor Janusz & Angie Louise-- inter-cut with scenes of well-known Seattle actors in vignettes from the play (Tim Gouran of Seattle Shakespeare Company is cast as Richard III). Funds raised will cover stipends (fees) for five actors, five band members, and the camera crew. Pressing Pictures offers a very generous work model -- and Seattle's ACT Theatre offers the perfect venue to film.

(GAY DAYS) Sonny Remembers and confronts Will and Paul about their affair!

My Husband Slept with my.............!

The truth came out and it exploded!   Sonny was about to read Will’s article on Paul and that, no doubt, will lead to him putting all the pieces together. Paul meanwhile has a bizarre meeting with Marlena that I still don’t really understand. Then later he runs in to Derrick who, of course, is lurking in the hallway of the hotel. Derrick is clearly not the brightest bulb as he tells Paul that Sonny is still in love with him. We are about to finally get some payoff from these many weeks or months of Sonny, Will and Paul all co-existing and interacting in Salem without any of them connecting the dots.

(OSCARS 2015) FULL Winners List!

"Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" won Best Picture at the 87th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, besting "American Sniper," "Boyhood," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Selma," "The Theory of Everything" and "Whiplash" for the honor.

"Birdman" won three other Oscars: Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki (his second Oscars win in a row after last year's "Gravity") and Best Original Screenplay.

It wasn't a total rout for "Birdman": star Michael Keaton lost Best Actor to Eddie Redmayne for "The Theory of Everything."

The other acting awards went to Julianne Moore (Best Actress for "Still Alice"), J.K. Simmons (Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash") and Patricia Arquette (Best Supporting Actress for "Boyhood").

"Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" tied for the most nominations going into the night with nine, and each film won four awards. Anderson's drama took home Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

"Whiplash" was another big winner, with three Oscars: Simmons' award, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Poland's "Ida" won Best Foreign Language Film, the first film from Poland to ever win the Oscar in the category. "Big Hero 6" won Best Animated Film. Laura Poitras' "Citizenfour" won Best Documentary.

Common and John Legend won Best Original Song for "Glory" from "Selma."

(MOVIE FREAK) Special OSCAR Preview!

by Sara Michelle Fetters

The 87th annual Academy Awards will be handed out this Sunday evening, and if all goes as expected then director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Broadway comedy-drama hybrid Birdman will likely walk away with the majority of the awards. Based on recent victories with the Producers Guild (PGA), the Directors Guild (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), it’s hard to imagine a scenario where it doesn’t emerge victorious, at least as far as Best Picture is concerned, the other seven nominees more or less along for the ride and little else.

Or are they? There are some interesting and intriguing wrinkles which could throw the evening into chaos. Richard Linklater’s 12-years-in-the-making Boyhood has won the majority of the awards up to this point, dominating with critics groups, taking home the BAFTA [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] and coming out on top as far the Golden Globes were concerned. Then there is Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. With over $300-million in ticket sales it’s easily the box office titan as far as this awards season is concerned. While Hollywood likes to talk about how money isn’t the end all-be all that kind of cash can lead voters to take a second look at the picture, and if that’s the case the chances for it to pull an upset aren’t as extreme as some might think.

As for the remainder of the nominees, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash and Selma, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where any of them could sneak their way to victory. But with the Academy’s preferential voting system, anything, I guess, is possible, and if Birdman and Boyhood split votes down the middle, and any one of those titles is listed third on a majority of ballots, then be prepared for a shock. If this scenario were to come comes to pass, what then? My money would be on quiet, lonely two-nomination Selma, because imagining a typical Academy member ballot where it was listed any lower than third is incredibly difficult to do.

(JESSE on the BRINK) War Paint!

by Jesse Archer

This is very cool. I'm so honored that artist Paul Richmond has painted me for his series, War Paint. I can always count on Paul's talents to make me better looking than I am! This portrait is titled, His Darkness.

Check it out on Paul's website here. "They understand too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing paint brought." Lord of the Flies, William Golding.

These are the reference photos I sent him a few months ago, so you can see how he improved upon the original. I'm also totally digging the background fleur de lis pattern he created.
