(MY view) Homophobic Tennessee lawmakers can eat my grits!

Ken Williamsby

Ever been to Tennessee, the Volunteer State? Tap your toes in Nashville, the heart of country music? Hike through the majestic Smoky Mountains? Traipse through Elvis’ Graceland mansion in Memphis? Or visit Ruby Falls and Rock City in Chattanooga?

Lots of wonderful people are from Tennessee: historical figures like Davy Crockett and Sequoia; singers such as Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Isaac Kaye; celebrities like Dinah Shore, Cybil Shepherd and Morgan Freeman. Some of my ancestors are from there, too.

ROYALTY: The Lesbian Homecoming King Of Patrick Henry High!

Photo
Patrick Henry High, in San Diego, has always "been a little bit ahead of the curve" on social issues, according to gay alum Ben Cartwright. Now, lesbian Rebecca Arellano has been named Patrick Henry's Homecoming King, according to San Diego's Channel 10News.

Perhaps Rebecca would have preferred to be a co-queen, along with girlfriend Haileigh Adams, but that's not how homecoming works. "If there was any other way to do it and have two lesbians who are a couple win, I would," she says. Haileigh Adams was nominated for homecoming queen; she'll learn whether she's won at the homecoming dance this evening.

Members of the Patrick Henry High community have so far been supportive of their lesbian prom king. During their inteview with Rebecca, according to 10News:... cars full of people drove by shouting out things like, "You guys are an amazing couple!"
See the station's interview with Ms. Arellano here.

ROYAL LUSH: Harry arrives in San Diego and heads for the Bars!

Hail Britannica. The royal party boy has finally sloshed up along our shores—for some San Diego area bar hopping. "Harry Wales" took some time out from Apache helicopter training just a day after he arrived in California to hit not one but "several" night spots, reports the Los Angeles Times.

One of Harry's watering holes was McP's Irish Bar and Grill in Coronado, just a block from the hotel where his ancestor Edward, the prince of Wales, supposedly first met Wallis Simpson, who eventually turned Ed's head so much that he renounced his crown. Harry seemed more interested in burgers and beers, witnesses reported.

GAY VOTE: Two Gay Candidates Run for Mayor in San Diego!

Picture 19Back in March I posted this story of 3 Gay Candidates for SD mayor, now they are 2....

And they're both Republicans!

Councilman Carl DeMaio and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis have partners. Voters don't seem to care either way about their orientation. And the third candidate for the Republican nomination, a former marine, was the sole state Republican assemblyman to vote for California's gay history bill.
It's a pro-gay phalanx! Though DeMaio, who recently spoke at a Rick Perry rally, is a bit controversial: Nicole Ramirez Murray, a longtime gay activist in San Diego (and former National President of the Imperial Court), criticized DeMaio in a recent column for the San Diego LGBT Weekly because DeMaio identified himself as single in a questionnaire for The San Diego Union-Tribune.

BARE FACTS: City Councilman Under Fire for Having Adam4Adam Account!

Karl-Baker-Web-PicBefore you get the idea that he's a hypocrite, city councilman Karl Baker, of Desert Hot Springs, California, is openly gay. This is not a sighting of the Homo Republicanus. In fact, the 70-year-old's only sin was to have a profile on Adam4Adam, and to use a shot of himself on the city council as his profile pic.

There was also a nude, mydesert.com reports: Until Thursday, a Desert Hot Springs city councilman used a photo of himself taken during a City Council meeting as part of his profile on a website where members solicit openly for sex.

San Diego Catholic Church Denies Funeral to Gay Man!

A Catholic Church in San Diego denied a funeral to one of its longtime parishioners because he was gay, 10 News reports: Sanfilippo Local businessman and devout Catholic John Sanfilippo died last week after struggling with emphysema. Friends said Sanfilippo planned for the funeral mass to be held at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Little Italy, where Sanfilippo had attended for decades. Friends said he even left the church a large sum of money in his will.

This past weekend, Sanfilippo's partner of 28 years and Sanfilippo's family were notified that the church canceled the funeral because Sanfilippo was gay.

And, apparently after outrage and some attention, the church has changed its mind:

In an email, Rodrigo Valdivia, the chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, told 10News, "The Diocesan office was notified about this situation earlier today... Diocesan Authorities have concluded that the funeral as scheduled at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish may take place. Plans for the ritual are yet to be made."

At the cocktail lounge that Sanfilippo owned for 28 years came outrage from friends over what some called a confusing statement from the San Diego diocese.

"All of a sudden, they change their mind and say, 'Well, you know, we may still allow the funeral to be here.' Why? Because they got caught in the process of denying equal rights to people?" asked Neil Thomas, a friend and customer of Sanfilippo's.

RELIEF: Gay Man's Deportation To Uganda On Hold!

A man facing certain death if he is returned to his native country is getting his first chance at freedom.

Supporters of Joseph Bokombe told 10News San Diego, the native Ugandan's deportation has been put on hold.

"I'm absolutely excited and just amazed," said Hector Martinez, who is leading a petition drive to keep Bokombe in the U.S.

Bokombe just received word of a surprise decision allowing him to appeal.

"It means he has an opportunity to save his life," said Martinez.

OOPS: Gay Dems' awkward Trans press-release correction!

The San Diego Democratic Club, a local affiliate of the pro-gay National Stonewall Democrats, issued this press-release correction today regarding a ridiculously awkward misquote. The "Lorena" referenced in the correction is Lorena Gonzalez, CEO of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, a regional union umbrella organization.

Without further commentary (for now): Labor Asks for LGBT Help - correction

Our recent [today] press release mistakenly quoted by Eric Banks of SEIU Local 221 as saying “while Lorena may consider herself a woman in the body of a gay man, I am the only openly gay union President here.”

It should have read, “while Lorena may consider herself a gay man in a woman’s body, I am the only openly gay union President here.”

The error was ours, not that of Eric Banks.

ORDERED: San Diego Marines start DADT-repeal training!

Pfc. Chris Copeland, 27, of Broken Arrow, Okla.,
participates in “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal training
at Camp Pendleton on Apr. 28.
Marines around San Diego County are beginning to get the Pentagon-issued training to prepare them for the repeal of the 17-year-old Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy that prohibits the open service of gays in uniform. reports Sign On San Diego.

While the Marines are allowing media to watch training sessions going on at local bases, the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force has not yet made an infantry group available for observation.

Combat forces in the Marines and Army raised higher objections to serving with openly gay troops than other sections of the military, according to a Pentagon survey released in late November. The survey found that about 44 percent of combat Marines and 35 percent of combat soldiers said allowing gays to serve openly would hamper their readiness to fight.

On March 4, the Union-Tribune first reported on the text of the training that all military branches will receive.

BACK to the BOOKS: California Senate passes FAIR Education Act!

A bill that would require schools to fairly and accurately portray the historic contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in social science instruction has passed the state Senate in a 23-14 vote. The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act (SB 48), authored by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), would also add sexual orientation and gender identity to the state’s existing anti-discrimination protections that prohibit bias in school activities, instruction and instructional materials, LGBT Weekly reports.

Studies have shown that inclusion of LGBT people in instructional materials is linked to greater student safety and lower rates of bullying. The bill is co-sponsored by Equality California and Gay-Straight Alliance Network.

Man pleads guilty to assault of gay candidate!

An Imperial Beach, CA man pleaded guilty April 20 to felony battery with serious injury to a gay man who at the time was running for a South Bay school board seat when he was punched and kicked at a fast food restaurant, San Diego's LGBT Weekly Reports.

Andrew Valencia, 30, had to get root canal treatment for displaced teeth and stitches to repair a split lip after the Oct. 24, 2010, incident, at a Jack in the Box restaurant around 1:35 a.m. in Imperial Beach.

Andrew Fisak, 25, will be sentenced on June 6 in Chula Vista Superior Court. Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador said Fisak could get probation, but the maximum sentence is four years in prison.

Questions for Isaac, Who Happens to Be Trans!

Google "transgender teenager" and you'll come up with dire statistics and horror stories of teens being harassed, homeless, even killed. Kids who are transgender, who live and identify as a different gender than their birth sex, can face extraordinary problems on top of ordinary teen drama writes Emily Alpert on Voice of San Diego.

So Isaac Gomez comes as a surprise. Gomez, a junior at High Tech High International who first came out as trans in middle school, may be the most happy, well-adjusted teenager I've ever met.

School is a welcoming place where nobody blinks about him using the boys' bathroom. His family is firmly behind him. And he is confident enough to stand up in front of hundreds of people and talk about being transgender, as he did earlier this month at a school board meeting to back new San Diego Unified rules against bullying. The policy bars harassment of students and school employees and pledges to create a training program for employees that includes sexual orientation, gender identity and how to intervene in bullying.

PROP 8 Trial: Gays, Lies and Videotape!

Controversies around Prop 8 and the lawsuit to overturn it continue almost unabated. Anti-equality activists want all film of the trial "put under lock and key," so that no one may view it. The presiding judge in the case had shown a 3 minute clip during a lecture he gave and that got Prop 8 proponents in a tizzy, Reports the Huffington Post.

You might remember that proponents of Prop 8 were adamantly against allowing the public see and hear their actual case. Prop 8 opponents, in contrast, were happy to make it public.

When it came to the majority voting on whether a minority had the same rights as themselves, Prop 8 proponents were advocates of "let the public decide." When it comes to the trial itself, they don't want the public to have easy access.

So, why the sudden switch from trusting the public to demanding secrecy?

Student Chaplain resigns days after coming out!

The elected Student Chaplain at Point Loma Nazarene University resigned his position April 1, just 12 days after he told a church forum he is gay. Now that forum has lost its place to meet, reports SD LGBT Weekly.

Todd Clayton, 21, who was elected by the students for two years in a row, acknowledged he was gay at a forum at the First Church of the Nazarene that is adjacent to the college.

“He’s tired,” said a female friend of Clayton’s on Sunday. She said he did not resign because of pressure from the conservative administration at the university. Clayton, a senior who will be graduating next month, could not be reached for comment.

Gay Arts Dealer Hopes to Bring Art, LGBT Community to Downtown SD!

Amazingly enough, San Diego arts dealer Alexander Salazar has managed to thrive in spite of the recession, the high cost of his carefully selected collections and the economic depression surrounding his downtown gallery space.

The openly gay art dealer and owner of Alexander Salazar Fine Art, a gallery space on 7th and Broadway that will celebrate its one-year anniversary this Saturday, wants to create an LGBT-friendly arts community in the neighborhood that he admits is “still sort of sketchy.”

There are “a lot of artists in San Diego, and a lot of galleries aren’t tapping into that market,” explained Salazar in an interview with San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. He intends to change that – first with the artist-in-residence space where he sponsors up and coming young artists, next with a campaign to bring other galleries to the neighborhood…and finally, with an increased presence in the San Diego LGBT community.

San Diego mayoral race has three homosexual candidates!

The June 2012 election for mayor of San Diego, America's eighth-largest city, could have three openly gay/lesbian candidates, details in Pink Paper.

Republican District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Republican City Councilman Carl DeMaio already have filed papers, and Democratic state Sen. Christine Kehoe is widely expected to file shortly.

Kehoe, as the only Democrat in the group, probably would garner the most support from the city's LGBT activists.

Wigs fly as 'Drag Queens" brawl at taco restaurant in San Diego!

RESTAURANT melees are alas becoming the norm, but a large group of Drag Queens brawling does take the eye, especially when there's video, as posted by the Daily Telegraph.

As seen on the right, the dustup was filmed by a fellow patron and quickly uploaded to YouTube.

It is unclear what prompted the fisticuffs at the La Fuente taco restaurant in San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood.

Combatants, some in sequined dresses and high heels, can be seen kicking and punching one another. Additionally, at least two wigs were dislodged during the incident.
