(OUTscene NW) Finding Portland!

Finding Portland was produced, shot, and edited in 51 days during March and April at the invitation of TEDx Portland, where the video was unveiled to a sell out crowd of 650 and met with a standing ovation. Filmed in Portland and the Columbia Gorge, this time-lapse piece offers a new perspective to the City of Roses. From a Portland Timbers season opening soccer game, to the top of the Fremont Bridge, to an aerial shot of Oneonta Gorge, Finding Portland tells the story of a city and its many faces.

Comprised of 308, 829 photographs taken from over 50 unique locations, it took an average of 3.8 hours to make each second of this film. The intent of the project was to place our cameras in unique locations across the city, achieve significant ranges of dynamic camera motion, and pursue cutting edge time-lapse techniques.

(OUTscene NW) PRE-view: Portland's Best in Theater and Music come together ONE Night Only!

Mars
by Mark Wilcox

My wife Heidi and I are producing and hosting a fundraising event downtown on Monday Night October 1st and I am asking personally that you consider joining us if you are available. I really need to starting getting the word out and getting tickets sold, so I need you and your network of contacts! We are bringing the Portland Musical Theater talent together for “best of” show evening – and we have some great performers.

You may not know that Heidi has been involved in musical theatre and singing here in Portland for over 30 years. She has worked with incredible talent and on great productions. We have asked those people to all come together for a night of entertainment in support of the Jackson Hill Wellness Center at the Randall Children’s Hospital (brand new facility on the Emanuel Hospital campus).

OUTscene: (PDX PRE-view) Scandals Kicks Off Anniversary Celebration Thursday

The word “institution” is defined as “something or someone firmly associated with a place or thing,” a significant organization in a society or culture. Scandals—also lovingly referred to as Portland’s gay Cheers—certainly meets the criteria. It’s been around for a great while, was groundbreaking, and caused quite a scandal when it moved to its second location (now Kenny & Zuke’s), becoming the first gay bar in Portland with sidewalls consisting of large, see-through windows. Keep in mind this was back when most queer watering holes were covered up and dimly lit speakeasies, Details from Just Out..

Three decades and another move later, Scandals remains a trailblazer. In an age when most gay bars rely on DJs to provide canned dance tunes, Scandals is introducing a series of live music acts every Thursday throughout the summer in honor of its 32nd anniversary—christened, fittingly enough, Thursday Night Live!

OUTscene: “Imma Homo” Stereotypical or Revolutionary?

“Imma Homo”, a song produced by Rainbow Noise, a record label with bases in both Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington that represent LGBTQ artists that typically emulate a mainstream musical appeal, reports Lezgetreal. Compared to what passes as music these days, “Imma Homo” isn’t the worst thing out there but like most rap songs, it relies more on a catchy, repetitive hook and stereotypically inspired lyrics. In other words, outside of the rappers admitting that they are indeed, in fact, gay – they seem to use the same type of style that heterosexual rappers seem to promote within their music.

Transforming Support Thriving in PDX!

Like being green, being trans isn’t easy. Portlanders who take the brave step of embracing their trans identities, though, can turn to a number of groups for much needed support, reports Just Out.

The most venerable of these is the Northwest Gender Alliance. The NWGA was formed in 1980 by three middle-aged transwomen. In the words of group spokesperson Jackie Stone, the founding trio “decided that there should be a safe place for transgender people to meet, compare stories and support each other and socialize.”

The group was careful in choosing places and planning events that would be safe, but also bold in their outreach. For instance, early members approached the Portland Police Department in an effort to help the department understand the truth about transgender people and dispel harmful myths.

As time went on, NWGA chapters formed in Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., Spokane and Salem. The Portland chapter currently meets monthly at Q Center and can be found on the web at nwgenderalliance.org.

Transphobia happens in queer spaces too, unfortunately!

Last weekend Portland trans-identified community member Nik Rapier attended one of our most popular queer nights, Gaycation. While there he had an unfortunate incident of transphobia which he initially recounted on the global web project to combat street harrassment Hollaback. He has also agreed to share his story with QPDX readers.
