(MY view) Why the Boy Scouts' Expulsion of Jennifer Tyrrell, a Lesbian Den Mother, Hits Close to Home for Me!

by Zach Wahls

Earlier this week, a story emerged out of Ohio that a Den Mother (a parent leader of Cub Scouts, the Boy Scouts of America's program for younger boys) was forced to resign from her position explicitly because she is a lesbian woman. This is merely the latest reminder of the BSA's long-standing national policy that disallows the participation of "avowed homosexuals" as adult leaders. Similar to the United States government, this is a policy that has been codified at the national level, but is left to local Boy Scout councils to enforce.

(MY view) My Children's Other Mom, Hilary Rosen!

by Elizabeth Birch

There is something just wrong with people twisting concerns for women and jobs into mom-on-mom conflict.

Here is the thing: Hilary Rosen is an amazing, loving and dedicated mother to our twins. I have absolutely no doubt Ann Romney and Hilary spend most of their waking hours worrying about the same things: how to best support their children in this complicated world. They both know the most important and central issue for children is that they are loved -- and safe.

When Hilary voices concerns over women and jobs what she is really saying is that most women -- and moms especially -- worry day in and day out about how to make it all come together at the end of each day. How to make ends meet, while juggling school bags, soccer balls and healthy lunches -- not to mention the magic tricks with time to to squeeze out those precious hours to be with our children each day.

REJECTED: Three South Carolina Gay Couples to Request Marriage Licenses and Be Denied Today!

Southcarolina
Protest is brewing in South Carolina as three gay couples plan to ask the state for marriage licenses on January 17th and 18th in Greenville: Alyssa Weaver and Michel McIver, along with the other two couples, know their request will be denied, because in 2006, the state passed a constitutional amendment not just banning gay marriage, but any other type of domestic union. But Weaver said she wants to call attention to the fundamental unfairness of denying her the ability to marry the woman who in their three years together supported her through breast cancer and has helped her as she goes through nursing school.
It's a campaign that's already had a run in North Carolina: Weaver and McIver and the other couples are being supported by the Campaign for Southern Equality, which backed about 20 same-sex couples in Asheville, N.C., who also sought marriage licenses knowing they would be denied. But North Carolina has never passed a ban on gay marriage, while South Carolina voters spoke emphatically about the issue.

OUTED: Ricky Gervais makes a Jodie Foster lesbian joke during Globes monologue!

Host Ricky Gervais, who offended just about the entire ballroom last year, takes the stage and inexplicably draws Foster into thick of it in the first 60 seconds: “I mustn’t mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films, and especially not Jodie Foster’s “Beaver.” I haven’t seen it myself. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys who haven’t seen it either. But doesn’t mean it’s not any good.”

BACK: Parenting Rights Restored To Lesbian Mom!

Embryo,_8_cellsIn Brevard County, FL, a mother's parenting rights have been restored in appeals court after a previous ruling decreed she had none, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

The woman, a police officer, was in a committed same-sex relationship for more than 11 years. Her partner was infertile; she was not. When the couple decided to have a baby, this woman donated one of her eggs, which was implanted in her partner's womb and brought to term. When the couple split last year, a Brevard County court ruled that the partner who gave birth to the child should have sole parenting rights, though he said the decision "broke his heart." But the law was the law; the partner who donated her egg had no legal standing. Not so, apparently. Last week, writes the Sentinel:

... a state appeals court in Daytona Beach overturned [the] decision, saying the other mother has parental rights, too.

The 5th District Court of Appeal ruled that the U.S. and Florida constitutions trump Florida law and give parenting rights to both women. State law, it added, has not kept up with the times.
"This is a unique case, and the appellate courts in Florida have never before considered a case quite like it," it said.

HISTORIC: Traditional Navy Homecoming Kiss is Gay in Historic First!

Kiss
The dock landing ship Oak Hill, deployed for three months in Central America, returned home today. As part of Navy tradition, one person is chosen to be the first off the boat to kiss a loved one. Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta was chosen, and her girlfriend, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell, was waiting.

The Virginian-Pilot reports: As the homecoming drew near, the crew and ship’s family readiness group sold $1 raffle tickets for the first kiss. Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta bought 50 - which is actually fewer than many people buy, she said, so she was surprised Monday to find out she'd won.

New Hotel Trend: Women-Only Rooms!

In the new trend among high-end hotels, men need not apply. The ritzy Dukes in London is the latest to experiment with women-only rooms, notes Katy Holland at Aol. The idea is to cater to single females or women traveling in groups, and the no-boys-allowed rule applies even to the hotel staff that caters to the rooms. The Naumi in Singapore and Premier in New York City have similar offers, though a Denmark government agency recently ordered the Bella Sky in Copenhagen to stop offering women-only floors.

GOD: Anti-Gay Marriage Politician Donated Sperm to Lesbians!

In his failed quest to become governor of Alabama, Bill Johnson campaigned against gay marriage in 2009—but he has been secretly donating sperm to lesbian couples in New Zealand since. Johnson headed to the country this year to aid in earthquake recovery; it was his desire to father children that drove him to donate without telling his wife, who has three kids from a previous relationship and had a hysterectomy in advance of their 2004 wedding.

Or so he told the New Zealand Herald, which found that Johnson has discussed donating sperm with at least nine women, three of whom have become pregnant. The urge to procreate is "a need that I have," he told the paper. Fertility experts don't recommend donating to more than four families, to cut chances of accidental incest. When the Herald approached Johnson on Thursday in a restaurant where he was dining with one of the women he had impregnated, he said there was "nothing my wife would want to give me more in the world than a child of my own"—though he admitted he hadn't planned to tell wife Kathy about his extracurricular activity until after the children were born. "I'm still in disbelief and very hurt, and our family has a lot of healing to do," she tells Alabama Live.

VICTORY: ACLU Settles Case of Female Student Excluded from Yearbook for Wearing Tuxedo!

The ACLU has reached an agreement with the Copiah County School District in the case of Ceara Sturgis, who was left out of her school yearbook because she wore a tuxedo in her senior photo, the ACLU of Mississippi reports: SturgisThe district has agreed to adopt a policy that will require all students to wear a cap and gown, rather than require boys to wear tuxedos and girls to wear drapes. As part of the agreement the school will include Sturgis’ photo featuring the tuxedo in her class’s composite picture hanging in the school library.

“I am thrilled that my photo will join my classmates on the wall of our school library,” said Sturgis. “It’s important that nobody else will be forced to wear something that doesn’t reflect who they are.”

The school will also amend its anti-discrimination policy to add language affirming its commitment to following the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
