(MY VIEW) Jodie Foster: It's Complicated!

by Mark O'Connell, L.C.S.W

Jodie Foster's reality show "would be so boring," she told the world at Sunday night's Golden Globes, where she was awarded for a lifetime in front of the camera. Foster's speech was hotter and colder than a Katy Perry song. Wearing a "coming-out gown," she seemed to reluctantly come out, and come out, while demanding privacy at one of the most public events on, well, the globe. These contradictions have ignited polarizing "blogofires" across the blogosphere, largely inflamed by Foster's latent declaration of her sexual orientation.

I am of two minds on the speech. As a gay person I'm frustrated, disappointed and nonplussed by a public figure drawing attention to her sexuality while simultaneously defending herself against identification with our community, but as a psychotherapist I'm openly and empathically curious about her, a compartmentalized person struggling for a cohesive sense of self, hoping to be recognized by us in all her authentic contradictions -- not unlike how I, and many in our community, hope to be recognized by her.

BITCH SLAP: Furnish says 'Integrity' of Golden Globes Must Be 'Questioned'!

Elton John's husband David Furnish had more to say to the NY Post about Madonna's Golden Globe win:Carson_ej“I think it was a fluke . . . When this happens you have to question the integrity of the awards. Did Madonna get the Golden Globe because she attended the awards and agreed be a presenter? Can you sing Madonna’s song? Can you hum it? It’s a song nobody has heard, from a film few have seen. The award should have gone to Mary J. Blige or Elton. I like Madonna’s music, but not her movies. She should stick to what she is good at.”

OUTED: Ricky Gervais makes a Jodie Foster lesbian joke during Globes monologue!

Host Ricky Gervais, who offended just about the entire ballroom last year, takes the stage and inexplicably draws Foster into thick of it in the first 60 seconds: “I mustn’t mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films, and especially not Jodie Foster’s “Beaver.” I haven’t seen it myself. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys who haven’t seen it either. But doesn’t mean it’s not any good.”

It's WAR: Elton John vs. Madonna engage a Bitch Fest!

The Bitch(es) is back!

According to Gay Star News, after Madonna  won the best original song Globe over Elton, Mary J. Blige and Glenn Close, among others, Furnish wrote on Facebook: ‘Madonna. Best song???? Fuck off!!!

And before the show, Elton said: ‘Mary J [Blige] might win it for “The Help”. Madonna doesn’t have a fucking chance.’

After her win, Madonna was asked backstage how it felt to beat Elton.

“I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years,” she said. “He’s been known to not speak to me. He’ll win for another award. I don’t feel bad.”

LIST: Golden Globe Nominations Announced!

Moneyball
The 69th Annual Golden Globe Award nominations were just announced.

The Hollywood Reporter looks at the list: On the film side, the HFPA favored Oscar frontrunners like The Artist, The Descendants and The Help, while giving due notice to George Clooney's political thriller The Ides of March, largely ignored on the critics and awards circuit up to this point.
The Artist led film nominations with six, while The Descendants and The Help followed with five. The Ides of March, Moneyball and Midnight in Paris each snagged four noms.

Downton Abbey and Mildred Pierce led the television side in nominations with four apiece, with Boardwalk Empire, Modern Family and Homeland following close behind. Surprises included recognition for Ryan Gosling for both Crazy Stupid Love and Ides of March, Revenge actress Madeleine Stowe and Necessary Roughness star Callie Thorne.

Ricky Gervais Explains That Missing Hour!

Ricky Gervais' hour-long absence from the Golden Globes Sunday night wasn't because celebrities were outraged at his insult-filled monologue and cutting introductions of Bruce Willis and Johnny Depp, the MC says. Conspiracy theorists suggested the British comic—who appeared more subdued upon his return—had been fired or even spirited away by outraged Scientologists, but Gervais says the absence was planned, Mediaite reports.

"I did every single introduction I was meant to. There just happened to be a long gap. This is because I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for—and who I knew had a good sense of humor," Gervais said in a statement. "Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great.”

Dear Golden Globes: Please Get Rid of Gervais!

Hollywood’s celebrities certainly were not happy with Ricky Gervais’s hosting gig at last night’s Golden Globes—but how did the critics feel about it? Read on:

"Are we at war with England? If not, then why have we been subjected to two years of Gervais hosting the Golden Globe Awards," asks Hank Stuever in the Washington Post. Gervais proved he wasn't right for the gig last year, and this year’s “lame jokes” made Stuever wish the audience would “rise up and pummel” the host.

Writing for Salon, Matt Zoller Seitz shares Stuever's sentiment, which he puts to the page via metaphor: "Unless you're a complete dunderhead, you don’t invite a scorpion into your tent without expecting him to sting you, especially after inviting him in exactly one year earlier and getting stung 23 times in the face."

On Deadline, Nikki Finke diverges, live-blogging that "the room has turned against Gervais. Which is why I'm liking him more and more as the night drags on." She predicts tons of complaints, which she hopes "will convince the powers-that-be to clean up the most corrupt awards-giving group in Hollywood history. More likely, NBC and Dick Clark Prods will follow the path of least resistance and just fire Gervais and all the writers.”

So, will Ricky be invited back next year? Definitely not, a member of the HFPA tells PopEater.

GLOBES: Ricky Gervais Went Missing for an Hour Last Night...

After Ricky Gervais’ insult-filled Golden Globes monologue last night, the host left the stage—for nearly an hour. Twitter lit up with speculation that he’d been fired—or worse. “Hosts always get trimmed in the second half of awards shows,” wrote one. “Ricky Gervais hasn't been killed. Or has he?” Of course, Gervais eventually emerged—but he looked, as Piers Morgan tweeted, “haunted,” and his jokes were more subdued, the Guardian reports.

Morgan’s first question when he interviews Gervais Thursday, he promised, would be, “What the hell did they do to you backstage?” according to the Hollywood Reporter. Before his mysterious absence, Gervais hadn’t pulled any punches, and many stars seemed uncomfortable with his jokes at their expense. One of those was Robert Downey Jr., notes the Los Angeles Times. His opening remark upon arriving onstage to present: "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the show's going pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"

GLOBES: Ricky Gervais Insults... Basically Everyone!

Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr., Cher: No one was immune when it came to host Ricky Gervais’ zingers at the Golden Globes. Watch part of his monologue in the gallery, courtesy of Mediaite, or check out some of the best lines, via People and E!:

"It's gonna be a night of partying and heavy drinking … or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast."

"I Love You Phillip Morris stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So, the complete opposite of some famous scientologists … probably. My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke."

"It was a big year for 3D movies: Toy Story. Despicable Me. Tron. Seems like everything this year was three-dimensional—except the characters in The Tourist."

"Do you want to go see Cher? No. Why not? Because it's not 1975."

"Nothing for Sex and the City 2? I was sure the Golden Globes special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza."

"He's the star of Iron Man, Two Girls and a Guy, Wonderboys. Sorry, are these porn films? Kiss Kiss (Bang Bang), Bowfinger. Really! Up the Academy. He has done all those films, but many of you in this room probably know [Robert Downey Jr.] from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angles County Jail."

GLOBES: Gays Win Big at Golden Globes!

The Golden Globes ended with a heartwarming surprise: A healthy-looking Michael Douglas, who presented the final award of the evening and noted that there must be "an easier way to get a standing ovation." That award, for best motion picture drama, went to the night's top winner: The Social Network, which took home four trophies, also including best director and best screenplay. Glee followed with three wins: best TV comedy or musical, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress (Jane Lynch).

Chris Colfer won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series as gay teen Kurt Hummel, on Glee.

Said Colfer: "To all the amazing kids that watch our show, and the kids that our show celebrates that are constantly told 'no' by the people and the environments, by bullies at school that they can't be who they are or have what they want because of who they are, well (holds up award)...screw that kids!"

For Film, 'The kids are all right" wins for Best Comedy film and Best Actress plus Cher's Song from Burlesque wins for Best song!

Other big winners, from the New York Times:

Actress, motion picture drama: Natalie Portman, Black Swan (Gay Favorite)

TV Golden Globes: “Glee” and “Modern Family” get multiple nods; Jane Lynch, Chris Golfer and Eric Stonestreet nominated!

Both shows are nominated for outstanding comedy and will compete against NBC’s 30 Rock, CBS’s The Big Bang Theory and two dramedies from Showtime: The Big C and Nurse Jackie, Greg in Hollywood reports.

It’s tough with comedy categories and award shows these days because so many of the shows are not pure comedies. That’s why I think Modern Family will win here just as it did at the Emmys.

In the outstanding actor in a comedy series, Glee’s Matthew Morrison will compete against Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock, Steve Carell of The Office, Thomas Jane of Hung and reigning Emmy winner Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory.

For outstanding actress in a comedy, Glee’s Lea Michelle is nominated with reigning Emmy champ Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, Toni Collette of The United States of Tara, Laura Linney of The Big C and 30 Rock’s Tina Fey who is the only nominee who appears in a pure comedy show.

The supporting actor and actress TV categories at the Golden Globes are always an eclectic bunch because they always mix genres: comedy, drama and TV movies and mineseries.

I’m just so very glad that openly gay performers Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch of Glee are a part of this year’s eclectic mix!

Chris, who brilliantly plays gay student Kurt Hummel on Glee, competes against reigning Emmy champ Eric Stonestrteet who plays one-half of a hilarious gay couple on Modern Family. Rounding out the category is this unlikely trio: Scott Caan of Hawaii Five-O, Chris Noth of The Good Wife, and David Strathairn of the HBO movie Temple Grandin.

Jane Lynch, who won the Emmy last September for her performance as Sue Sylvester of Glee, competes against Modern Family’s Sonia Vergara, Dexter’s Julia Stiles, Hope Davis of the TV film A Special Relationship and Kelly MacDonald of the TV miniseries Boardwalk Empire.

Congratulations to all of the TV nominees. Click HERE for a full list!
