(OUTscene NW) Big night for Capitol Hill clubbing as Q debuts!

The four(!) Q disco balls get a beta test (Image: Q)

It has come a long way from the days back in 2010 when the club was first envisioned for an underground space at 12th and Pike. Saturday night, Q, Capitol Hill's new "major EDM venue" will open to the first time. Friday night, the VIPs put the space -- and fancy-pants sound and light system -- to the test. This weekend, the Hill's club economy will experience its first nights with a growing list of new players on the field.  The Social debuted this May and is continuing to hang in there despite some rough patches with the original concept.

(OUTscene NW) PRE-view; The 15th annual Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opens Friday the 30th with ‘We Were Here’

Photo from Director David Weissmen of Haight Ashbury 1978.
One might feel compelled to express excitement for the lineup of Portland‘s Annual Lesbian and Gay Film Fest but I am truly and deeply sincere when I say that this year, now 15th of the festival, has me even more excited than the past. There’s isn’t a night where I wouldn’t go out to see 1 or more of the films being shown at Cinema 21, although I am particularly excited about the women in rock anthem Trigger playing Monday night, the high school musical type comedy Mangus, (Wednesday night), and the 2 films showcasing trans young people of different ages Romeos (Sunday afternoon) and Tomboy playing Wednesday.

Friday opening night film (at 7:30pm) is We Were Here, David Weissman’s document of the AIDS crisis in the 80′s in San Francisco. A profound and moving recollection the film talks to those involved in the fight as well as exploring the larger socio-political implications of the beginning of the AIDS era and its affect on the gay community. An official Sundance selection is has also be called one of the best films of the year.

(OUTscene America) PRE-view: Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka to be honored at L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center Gala Nov. 12

When Neil Patrick Harris got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last week, I thought how nice it was to have his longtime love David Burtka by his side.
That’s why I’m so glad to learn that Neil and David will be honored at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala & Auction on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.

They are the perfect pair to join the Center in celebrating “40 Years of Family” at the gala.

Neil and David are steadfast supporters of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations, including the Center and have given generously to help LifeWorks, the Center’s youth development and mentoring program, thrive.

OUTscene America (PRE-view) San Diego Gay Pride lands Margaret Cho for festival performance!

The famously blunt and unapologetic comedian Margaret Cho will headline at the San Diego Pride Festival this year, taking the main stage at Marston Point in Balboa Park on July 16, 2011 as the final act in a full-day performance roster.

Cho, who recently appeared on season 11 of Dancing with the Stars and is gearing up for a U.K. tour touting her 2011 Grammy-nominated comedy album, Cho Dependent, has long endeared herself to the LGBT community thanks to her fierce stance against homophobia, anti-gay political movements and LGBT bullying.

A professional comedian for nearly 20 years, Cho got her start on late-night television and made it big with hits like her 1999 Broadway show, I’m The One That I Want and the 2008 VHI series The Cho Show.

Tickets for San Diego Pride are $15 a day or $25 for a two-day ticket if purchased before June 30, and $20-$30 thereafter. Find out more about the festival at http://www.sandiegopride.org/
