(MY View) A Senate in the Gun Lobby’s Grip!

by Gabby Giffords

SENATORS say they fear the N.R.A. and the gun lobby. But I think that fear must be nothing compared to the fear the first graders in Sandy Hook Elementary School felt as their lives ended in a hail of bullets. The fear that those children who survived the massacre must feel every time they remember their teachers stacking them into closets and bathrooms, whispering that they loved them, so that love would be the last thing the students heard if the gunman found them.

On Wednesday, a minority of senators gave into fear and blocked common-sense legislation that would have made it harder for criminals and people with dangerous mental illnesses to get hold of deadly firearms — a bill that could prevent future tragedies like those in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., Blacksburg, Va., and too many communities to count.

Some of the senators who voted against the background-check amendments have met with grieving parents whose children were murdered at Sandy Hook, in Newtown. Some of the senators who voted no have also looked into my eyes as I talked about my experience being shot in the head at point-blank range in suburban Tucson two years ago, and expressed sympathy for the 18 other people shot besides me, 6 of whom died. These senators have heard from their constituents — who polls show overwhelmingly favored expanding background checks. And still these senators decided to do nothing. Shame on them.

(MY View) Why Chuck Hagel's Gay Problem Is Getting Worse!

by Michelangelo Signorile

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) has a problem if his and the White House's goal is to quell criticism for his anti-gay past. And that problem is only getting worse.

Openly gay outgoing Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) slammed Hagel on New Year's Eve, saying he "strongly opposes" a Hagel nomination for secretary of defense. Other progressive LGBT critics have been speaking out in recent days, as well. Already under relentless attacks for weeks from neocons opposed to Hagel's views on Israel and Iran and determined to stop President Obama from nominating him to the Defense Department post, Hagel will have only himself to blame if the gay issue helps sink him.

(LIST) 12 Stars-Turned-Politicians!

Despite the fact that celebrities almost always seem to lean left, Celebuzz reports that most stars who become politicians are actually Republican. A dozen Hollywood VIPs who ended up with DC connections:
  • George Murphy: The 1930s and ‘40s star was the first big actor to transition to politics, serving as a senator in the 1960s and ‘70s.
  • Sean Duffy: From reality TV to Washington, DC? Yep, it can happen. Duffy has appeared on two Real World series, is married to another Real World star, and is now in Congress.
  • Ben Jones: After playing Cooter on The Dukes of Hazzard, Jones was elected to Congress.
  • Fred Grandy: He served eight years in Congress after playing Gopher on The Love Boat, and now he works at a foreign policy think tank.
  • Fred Thompson: First he was a Senate lawyer, then he became a character actor. Then he was elected to the Senate … but left and went on Law & Order. In 2008, he ran for president, but now he’s back to acting.
  • Jesse Ventura: He went from wrestler and actor to mayor of a Minnesota town, then governor of the entire state.

(MY VIEW) Silence on Gay Issues in the Debates: How That Helped Romney, Not Obama!

by Michelangelo Signorile

In a Washington Post column headlined "Silence Is Golden on Gay Issues," my longtime colleague and friend Jonathan Capehart heralds it as "a great thing" that gay issues weren't discussed in the presidential debates this year. The Human Rights Campaign's Fred Sainz agrees, telling Capehart, "What we're seeing is proof positive that gay issues aren't the wedge they used to be and furthermore, the public has moved on."

Really? Though LGBT rights now have the support of a big majority of Democrats and independents, they're far from a non-issue for the vast majority of Republicans, who oppose same-sex marriage, and certainly for the evangelical base of the GOP, which helped keep Rick Santorum competitive during the primaries.

(LIST) 5 Funniest Anti-Gay Ads Ever Made!

"Boys Beware" was Funny, But a shocker!
The ominous pauses, old-timey music, hokey special effects—yes, anti-gay-marriage ads can be "comically bad," reports Mother Jones. The mag picks five that are unintentionally funny:
  • "That's Not the Change I Voted For" by the Campaign for American Values PAC (2012). Best line: "Obama is trying to force gay marriage on this country. That's not the change I voted for." Oh, she voted for Obama?
  • "I'm Confused" by the National Organization for Marriage (2009). Best line: "My teacher says if Grandpa was a girl, that's OK, you can still be married."
  • "Boys Beware" by the Inglewood, California, Police Department and School District (1961). Best line: "No matter where you meet a stranger, be careful if they are too friendly. One never knows when the homosexual is about."
  • "War on Religion" by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (2011). Best line: "You don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know that there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school." What's that about Christmas, again?
  • "A Storm Is Coming" by the National Organization for Marriage (2009). Best line: "I'm a Massachusetts parent helplessly watching public schools teach my son that gay marriage is OK."
