Hollywood’s celebrities certainly were not happy with Ricky Gervais’s hosting gig at last night’s Golden Globes—but how did the critics feel about it? Read on:
"Are we at war with England? If not, then why have we been subjected to two years of Gervais hosting the Golden Globe Awards," asks Hank Stuever in the Washington Post. Gervais proved he wasn't right for the gig last year, and this year’s “lame jokes” made Stuever wish the audience would “rise up and pummel” the host.
Writing for Salon, Matt Zoller Seitz shares Stuever's sentiment, which he puts to the page via metaphor: "Unless you're a complete dunderhead, you don’t invite a scorpion into your tent without expecting him to sting you, especially after inviting him in exactly one year earlier and getting stung 23 times in the face."
On Deadline, Nikki Finke diverges, live-blogging that "the room has turned against Gervais. Which is why I'm liking him more and more as the night drags on." She predicts tons of complaints, which she hopes "will convince the powers-that-be to clean up the most corrupt awards-giving group in Hollywood history. More likely, NBC and Dick Clark Prods will follow the path of least resistance and just fire Gervais and all the writers.”
So, will Ricky be invited back next year? Definitely not, a member of the HFPA tells PopEater.
