(OUTview NW) DON'T MISS: See Jinkx and Major in the "Hysterical", UNWRAPPED Only at the Seattle Rep!

(SRT)
by MK Scott

You loved them as The Vaudevillians, now love them as Jinkx and Major! Drag performers Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales return to Seattle Rep’s Leo K. Stage with more tunes, more laughs, mistletoe and menorahs. A holiday show like no other, Unwrapped.

As I arrived at the 5pm show this past Friday, I was welcomed by Jinkx (Jerick Hoffer) and Major (Richard Andriessen) with trays of cookies for their audience, Jinkx was gorgeous in an golden gown, and Major was distinguished.

During the show, Jinkx dressed in a flowing red gown with white trim, but refuses to do the show, she's a Jewish gay boy in a dress and thinks the time between Thanksgiving and New Years is one be giant black hole. Major urges her on and we get a mix of Jinkx/Kitty and Major/Dr. Dan's similar squabbles as in the Vaudevilians.

Too Much Holiday Spirit(s)?                   (Watters)
The Funniest moment was a tie. One with Jinkx lying near the edge of the stage and rolling off into the front row! As Jinkx drinks and drinks, she tries to sing the 12 days of Xmas sloshed in a very Lucy kind of way. Like Lucy, Jinkx excels in physical comedy and doesn't disappoint. Major has a 'major' solo number and commands the stage. Later, 100% sober Jinkx returned in a white robe with feather trim.

Jinkx and Major takes an unconventional approach to holiday classics. So drag yourself to the theatre for big cheer– and make sure to arrive early for photo ops!

See Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales in UNWRAPPED at Seattle Rep through December 13th. Click HERE for Tix and Info.

A New Man for Jeremy?                        (WOLFE)
by MK Scott

One of the most acclaimed and popular LGBT series, the first season was released by Wolfe Video in 2014, and was a popular hit digitally and on DVD. Season 2 continues to humorously chronicle the hip millennial population struggling to navigate life, love, and making the rent - set against the bohemian backdrop of the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Entertainment Weekly called the series 'funny and heartbreaking," and Out Magazine singled it out as "steamy and dramatic."

EASTSIDERS SEASON 2 was created, written and directed by actor Kit Williamson (Mad Men), who also stars in the series as Cal, an ambitious young photographer who navigates the complex world of modern gay life and monogamy with his boyfriend, Thom, played by Van Hansis (As The World Turns).

Matthew McKelligon (Interior Leather Bar and the upcoming, You're Killing Me), who plays Jeremy. and I chatted by email:

(OUTview NW) Theater RE-view: SRT's "Come From Away" is Phenomenal and could be Broadway's Latest Sensation in the Coming Year!

Colella was a Stand-out!       (Bennion)
by MK Scott

It was bound to happen, a "9/11 Musical", but not about the attacks itself, but the inspirational stories that came from it and nothing was as remarkable as the story about the events in Gander, Newfoundland. This story as well as an incredible soundtrack is the basis for "Come From Away", currently at the Seattle Rep.

Making its NW/World Premiere, 'Away' made its official World Premiere this past summer at the La Jolla Playhouse near San Diego, directed by famed Broadway Director, Christopher Ashley (Memphis) and many from the La Jolla cast reprise their roles in the Seattle production. "Come From Away" has Broadway Bound written all over it.

When Ted Koppel issues a warning, you listen.

The ABC News veteran who’s won every significant TV award (including 42 Emmys) tells us that a major cyber attack on America’s power grid is not only possible, but likely. Such an attack would be devastating—potentially leaving us without power for weeks or months. Scarier still is his revelation that the US is shockingly unprepared: the Department of Homeland Security has no plan for handling the aftermath of an attack. Join one of our most renowned journalists to examine the reality of the threat—and ways we can prepare for catastrophe, as outlined in his new book, Lights Out.

(Blank on Blank) Ray Bradbury on Madmen!

"Nobody else is going to give a damn what you're doing, so you need a few other people like yourself" - Ray Bradbury as told to two college kids on road trip in 1972

In the autumn of 2012, Lisa Potts rediscovered -- literally, behind her dresser -- a taped cassette of a long-lost interview with author Ray Bradbury that she made as a college student journalist back in 1972.

The recording was made in a car plying the Los Angeles freeways between Bradbury's home in West L.A. and Chapman College in Orange County. Potts and a fellow student named Chadd Coates were taking Bradbury to present a lecture. Bradbury had a lot of advice for Lisa and Chadd.

On tape we get to hear Bradbury telling the students about the keys to friendship, why he was afraid of himself and would never drive, his keys to writing and telling a story, why Mars was the center of his fascination, what's the secret to love, and why he called himself "a madman".

(OUTview NW) Theater RE-view: Seattle Finally has GEEK Theater and the Campy "Shoggoths on the Veldt" fits the Bill!

Only One is the hero!    (Loomis)
by MK Scott

Geek Theater has come to Seattle and it was only a matter of time, The Rogues Gallery made its debut this past weekend with a super funny but convoluted comedy, called Shoggoths on the Veldt, a original CTHULHU adventure by Cameron McMary (Of Dice and Men).

The concept is like a female Indiana Jones meets Johnny Guitar (Remember the Joan Crawford campy and dykish western) looking for the Veldt, a small statuette familiar to fans of H.P. Lovecraft, that cannot be destroyed, and so spawns a quest to deepest darkest Africa with other homages to Lovecraft including the swashbuckling heroine of  Lady Euphonia (Jennifer Crooks), and the super cute and dingbat explorer, Welton (the Fab, Curtis Eastwood) and the ghost of Phillipa's fiance, Lord Melford (Cody Smith) with Male Servant, Crompit (Cole Hornady).

(Blank on Blank) Kurt Vonnegut on Man-Eating Lampreys!

"Nothing means anything" - Kurt Vonnegut on November 8, 1970

From the Pacifica Radio Archives

Hear the full, unedited interview plus see Vonnegut's art work, learn secrets of Slaughterhouse-Five, and more nuggets of Vonnegut here: http://blankonblank.org/kurt-vonnegut

In November 1970, Kurt Vonnegut walked into a class room at NYU. He was a guest speaker that day. He’d prepared some handwritten notes on what he wanted to say: there were his thoughts on the art of writing, his childhood, the death of his parents. He jumped from topic to topic as he shuffled through his papers. Sometimes his voice trailed off. He delivered punchlines with perfect timing. The class roared. Listening to this tape, we get to be flies on the wall that day. So take a seat, but your book bag down and enjoy. Here’s Kurt Vonnegut

(OUTview NW) THEATER RE-view: NCTC's 'Festen' is "PURE 'Family' DRAMA"!

Is Anyone in this Family Truly Happy?  (Photo;  John Ulman)
by MK Scott

Back in 2013, I saw and reviewed the Tracy Letts' Black Comedy, August: Osage County at (the now defunct) Balagan Theater, and the subject matter of a incestuous, dysfunctional family was shocking and took 3 hours to get there. Currently the New Century Theater's production of David Eldridge's Festen, goes there and more and it is another one of those 90 Minute ONE Acts.

Festen was based from an infamous 1998 Danish film with the english title of 'The Celebration" about a family gathering turned nightmare, but I am getting too far ahead. The Play also proves there is dysfunction in all classes from the middle class of  August: OC to the upper crust of Festen,  with fifth and denial it has no barriers.

(OUTview NW) INTER-view: Coco Peru RETURNS to the NW for 2 shows and MK's got the Scoop!

by MK Scott

Can you believe it has been almost 3 years since the always FAB, Coco Peru was in Seattle for her show, "She's got Balls"? Well, she is coming back to the NW this weekend at Seattle's Unicorn on the Saturday the 14th  and Sunday the 15th at Portland's Euphoria Night Club.

Ever since becoming a YouTube sensation Coco Peru has been inundated with emails from people of all ages asking her the same question, “Coco, what is the secret to a happy life?” So, being the giver that she is, Coco wrote a new show A GENTLE REMINDER – COCO’S GUIDE TO A SOMEWHAT HAPPY LIFE where, through story and song, Coco shares with her audience a step by step guide that leaves you prepared to enter the world again ready to create your very own “somewhat” happy life. Why just a “somewhat” happy life? Well, let’s face it, you wouldn’t want to be happy all of the time because, always remember, “happy” people make such a racket.

I chatted with Coco by email:

(Where The Bears Are) - FUNERAL BEARS!

While attending Dickie Calloway’s funeral, Nelson (Ben Zook) can’t seem to muster a somber mood for the occasion. Meanwhile, the Bears question two suspects who both had strong motives for murdering Dickie-- his ambitious acting understudy Theo Summerfield and Nelson’s own best friend from college Sandy Quinn (Gabby Sanalitro) who was devastated when Dickie stole Nelson away from her to move to Hollywood and form their Two Fat Guys comedy act.

(OUTview NW) RE-view: Artswest's "My Mañana Comes” proves 'Straight' Contemporary Drama Still Exists!

(Brunk)
by MK Scott

And now something completely different! After a month of seeing Rock Musicals, Classics and Homoerotic Productions, I then was asked to review Elizabeth Irwin’s working-stiff drama “My Mañana Comes” currently at Seattle's Artswest Playhouse, and the best I can sum up is a play similar to The FLICK, the NCTC's (and Gregory Award Nominated)  production of 3 workers at an old movie house that we reviewed this past March. The difference in My Mañana  is that this time it depicts 4 men working as bus boys at an upper class Italian restaurant in Manhattan dealing with class, but also dealing with the American Dream.

Fortunately, this play is a 90 min. ONE Act and as with FLICK, the months go by as does the repetitiveness of the duties of the working class.

(OUTview NW) RE-view: Seattle Rep's 'Buyer and Cellar' is a One-Man View to All Things Barbra!

(Bennion)
by MK Scott

It has been nearly 20 years since an 'ALL Barbra' film has been released, remember the classic,"The Mirror has two Faces"? So what has she done in 20 years? Music, and a few films (Fockers, Guilt Trip) and her marriage to James Brolin, etc.  Also noteworthy was her 2010 coffee table book called, “My Passion for Design,” and many eyewitnesses confirm that Barbra Streisand has her own “vintage” mall in the vast basement of a decorative barn.

Jonathan Tolins, author of the very entertaining one-man show,  “Buyer & Cellar”, and apparently has never been there but he obviously written this as a fantasy and labor of love.  Everything about Barbra is about Perfect detail. I remember hearing about this Play in 2013 with Michael Urie starring in this One-Man show. So when I heard the Seattle Rep was going to stage this in the Leo K Theater this fall, I was so looking forward it. Also looking forward to it was the mostly gay audience on opening night.
