(OUTview NW) INTER-view: Coco Peru RETURNS to the NW for 2 shows and MK's got the Scoop!
by MK Scott
Can you believe it has been almost 3 years since the always FAB, Coco Peru was in Seattle for her show, "She's got Balls"? Well, she is coming back to the NW this weekend at Seattle's Unicorn on the Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th at Portland's Euphoria Night Club.
Ever since becoming a YouTube sensation Coco Peru has been inundated with emails from people of all ages asking her the same question, “Coco, what is the secret to a happy life?” So, being the giver that she is, Coco wrote a new show A GENTLE REMINDER – COCO’S GUIDE TO A SOMEWHAT HAPPY LIFE where, through story and song, Coco shares with her audience a step by step guide that leaves you prepared to enter the world again ready to create your very own “somewhat” happy life. Why just a “somewhat” happy life? Well, let’s face it, you wouldn’t want to be happy all of the time because, always remember, “happy” people make such a racket.
I chatted with Coco by email:
MK SCOTT: So, Tell us about your new show, “A Gentle Reminder: Coco’s Guide To A Somewhat Happy Life”?
COCO PERU: Now that I'm older and "wiser" I seem to be getting a lot of emails from fans, both young and older, asking me for all sorts of advice so I was inspired to write a show that actually addresses some of the life lessons I've learned along the way. And although my stories are not what an advice columnist like Dear Abby would see fit to print, I think my stories are inspiring in a classic Coco kind of way.
MK: Where else are you going after Seattle?
COCO: Seattle and Portland this weekend, which are two of my favorite cities to work and I'm not just saying that. I feel like people in both these cities come to my shows ready to have a good time with zero attitude. I love it!
MK: Do Like Stand up or working in Films? Any story you want to share about working on 'Trick' or 'Girls will be Girls"?
COCO: I love both of them. I really can't choose one over the other. In my new show in talk about how many of the things in my life that scared me and I almost said no to, turned out to be my most rewarding experiences. I include both those films in that category and I am so grateful that I ended up doing them because they really changed my life.
MK: Do consider your a Drag queen, or an actor who just happens to portray a character in Drag?
COCO: I am proud drag queen! I also trained to be an actor. However, it was other drag queens that inspired me to create Coco so I would never deny my sisters by trying to not call myself what I am: a big, old drag queen!
MK: What's the difference between Coco and Clinton?
COCO: Not much difference! Clinton is a little more shy, and Coco is more of a cougar!
