(OUTscene NW) RE-view: USHER oozes Sex Appeal and a New Audience at Seattle's Key Arena!

I first saw Usher (Raymond) about 16 years ago, not just music, but as an actor on the CBS Soap, "The Bold and the Beautiful". His Character hooked up with Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz) as a one night stand and after Amber got pregnant she worried if the Baby was Raymond's or (her white and rich) Boyfriend's by the time the story had wrapped up, Usher had moved on and the character was recast. Usher was too busy with his music career that was skyrocketing fast!

His Album, 'My way' hit the charts and was opening for Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope Tour. You see Usher dance and Perform you instantly go back to Michael Jackson and know he was a Major influence. You also see a little of Elvis and currently the look and sex appeal of Marvin Gaye.

When I saw the Seattle stop of his UR Experience Tour this past Wednesday at Key Arena, I knew ticket sells were low, but I had no idea that his core audience had shifted. A Majority of the audience were Asian and White with a small Minority of Black (mostly women). That isn't that bad, because Usher, like Michael Buble' is carrying on a legacy of musical influences (Sinatra/Como) as mentioned the influences of MJ and Gaye. Those Fans will never go away.

Todd (Ian Parks) goes deeper undercover at Chunk Studios by modeling for a photo shoot for the acerbic and now number one suspect photographer Carla Cassidy. Meanwhile, Reggie fights his attraction to muscle stud private eye Mickey Swift (Adam Ridge) fearing he might share crucial information that will give the hot Australian a leg up in the race to solve the case. Something's missing...

Amanda Gari doesn't do supporting actress. Yes, she's been a fiercely loyal friend to Leon Acord ever since they first met at her audition for 'Carved In Stone' some 5 years ago (Gari, a triple threat who was literally raised on the stage as the daughter of actor and artist, Roberto Gari, and the granddaughter of radio personality and all around performer, Eddie Cantor, was trying out for the part of Judy Garland, which she of course landed, having successfully channeled the gay icon onstage two previous times). And yes, she has perfectly embodied Nathan's quick as a wink assistant/Girl Friday, Lydia Lasker, since Season 1... but if you're going to write a part for her - as Mr. Acord did - you better expect some first class scene stealing.

"I'd written about 5 episodes before I started sharing my scripts with a couple of people," Leon recalls, "and one of the first comments I got back actually from Laurence was, Yeah, it's a gay show, but you need a woman in the show... So I thought, Lydia Lasker... Amanda Abel! - which was her name at the time... it was just immediate and very close to who she is: Lydia's a cabaret singer, Amanda is a cabaret singer. Lydia is loyal and trustworthy and fabulous, and so is Amanda."

RAK is a short film about humanity. This is Our Pal, Chris Savatore's project. It will remind you of how a random act of kindness, can literally save a life. Or how judgement can change the course of history forever. Our hero Paul, leads us through many social issues we are facing today including addiction/alcoholism, homelessness, bullying, over population in animal shelters, teen suicide, mental illness, gay rights, Alzheimer’s and domestic violence.

Our film demonstrates how the solution actually starts within you. A random act of kindness can change a life forever and have a lasting positive impact towards these problems being resolved. It doesn’t take much to change the world, in fact the power is within us all. It’s there, each decision, every moment ~ and each and every judgement.

We can all agree that these issues are still a massive problem in our society and the world at large. Our film, RAK will bring awareness, educate and empower people to stand up and make a difference on an everyday level. Whether it's helping an old lady do her hair or taking a senior citizen to the grocery store. These random acts of kindness change lives forever. What do you have to give? Support this Project.

(OUTscene NW) Music RE-view: The Ageless Fleetwood MAC Rocks Tacoma Dome!

Some of my best music memories was riding with my mom in the mid to late 1970's hearing a variety of different music genre's from Elvis to Disco to Pop and Classic. When I first heard Fleetwood Mac's 'You Make Loving Fun" the music and Beat reminded be of 'I Dream of Jeannie' and could imagine Barbara Eden in her Jeannie costume singing it. Years later, I realized that was sung by the songstress, Christine McVie, 71, who is now back after being away from Fleetward Mac since 1998. 

Then we have the legendary (and Ageless) Stevie Nicks 66, who I remember singing Gypsy as well several over Hits, plus from her latter solo career that started in the mid-80's for 'Stand Back'. .

Lindsey Buckingham, 65, I remember for his soulful voice, good looks. I had forgotten he is also an incredible Guitarist.

Mick Fleetwood, 67, the creator of those beats and John McVie, 68, is in the background, and who Mick calls the Backbone of the Mac.

Back in the 90's, I remember how excited I was watching one of their concerts on TV, I think it was 1997's The Dance, I remember I even got the CD.

So one of my items on my Bucket List was fulfilled this past Thursday at the Tacoma Dome and that was actually seeing the Full Mac back together Live.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (18:30 UTC) on Friday, November 22, 1963 (50 Years ago), in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper while traveling with his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally's wife Nellie, in a presidential motorcade. A ten-month investigation from November 1963 to September 1964 by the Warren Commission concluded that Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial.

Although the Commission's conclusions were initially supported by a majority of the American public. polls conducted between 1966 and 2003 found that as many as 80 percent of Americans have suspected that there was a plot or cover-up. A 1998 CBS News poll showed that 76% of Americans believed Kennedy had been killed as the result of a conspiracy. A 2013 AP poll showed, that although the percentage had fallen, more than 59% of those polled still believed that more than one person was involved in the President's murder. A Gallup Poll in mid-November 2013 showed 61% believed in a conspiracy and 30% thought Oswald did it alone.

Whether you love HBO's groundbreaking millennial hit or simply prefer to hate on it for its deference to conspicuous consumption, there's no denying that Sex and the City was, and still remains, a cultural force to be reckoned with. Like All in the Family, Cheers, and Seinfeld, its influence on episodic ensemble comedy is so expansive that a writer of this stuff would be lying if he or she said the show had no bearing on their work. Leon Acord is not a liar. "An inspiration that I will cop to -- and I hope it doesn't get me sued, because we do get compared to the show a lot -- is Sex and the City."

He reveals, "I remember seeing the Sex and the City movie, and at the end of it, Samantha is turning 50 and decides to break up with her boyfriend and go back to her single life, and I remember watching the movie and having sort of this moment of, like, 'Oh, that's so sad. She's 50 and single.' And then I checked myself before I wrecked myself and went, 'Wait a minute. You're not far from 50. Do you think it's sad?'"

Of course, things were slightly different for the actor/writer, who'd been in a committed relationship for 20-plus years, but as any gay man -- hell, anybody, for that matter -- over 40 and living in Los Angeles will tell you, age can be way more than just a number here. "In San Francisco gays of a certain age are still kind of marginalized, but there is this feeling of, 'They're the elders; they're the history bearers,'" Acord explains. "There is a kind of respect for older gay men that does not exist in L.A. L.A doesn't want to know from history -- gay, straight, or otherwise."

(Larry King Now) A Panel of Experts Talk About Being Transgender in America!

 

A panel, featuring (Outview Pal) Glee’s Alex Newell, GLAAD’s Nick Adams and AOL’s “True Trans” host Laura Jane Grace sit down with Larry King on the Emmy nominated series “Larry King Now” to discuss what needs to be done to ensure a better quality of life for the transgender community.

The ‘Against Me’ singer, Laura Jane Grace, told Larry the term 'trans' is her descriptor of choice – “I think it sounds cool.” She also explained to Larry that she’s realized that being transgender is only part of who she is -- “it’s a really small detail when it comes down to it.”

GLADD’s Nick Adams talked about how laws against transgender people are still pervasive, including in the workplace and military, “There are many Western countries that allow trans people to serve, there’s no reason why they can’t serve here as well.” Larry also asked our panel about the ban on transgender people in the military and Laura Jane Grace shares a story from her new show on AOL, “True Trans”.

The panelists reacted to New York Magazine’s cover story by telling Larry that the headline ‘sensationalizes’ a story about the country’s highest paid CEO. Adams went on to explain that the focus on transgender people's’ physical attributes in many news media reports is objectifying and often takes away from the larger issues. While Orange Is The New Black, Transparent, and Glee have made strides, GLAAD’s Nick Adams told Larry that too often trans characters are not shown in a positive light.

(Old Dogs & New Tricks) "Fortunes Flip"!

Picking up two weeks after the events of ODNT’s mini-movie/Halloween special “WeHo Horror Story,” the comedy continues the stories of four middle-aged, gay best friends living in youth-obsessed West Hollywood. The principal cast of Leon Acord, Curt Bonnem, Jeffrey Patrick Olson & David Pevsner return for another season of fun, friendship and healthy doses of sex.  Amanda Gari also returns as audience favorite “Lydia Lasker” in an expanded role.

It's a typically sun-drenched early Sunday afternoon in June the first time we chat. The last of the gloom has burned off -- at least from where I sit, in Hollywood, though he'll tell me that from his front porch (about 12 miles due west), he can still see some scattered grey lingering on its way back to sea.

Leon Acord isn't exactly feeling perky today. No, he's not pulling diva rank because he's the writer, star, producer, and occasional director of his very own wildly successful Web series (Old Dogs & New Tricks, available exclusively on Wolfe Video and at OldDogsNewTricksTheSeries.com). Nor is he kvetching because the show -- which follows the lives of four gay men over the age of 40 trying to navigate life and love in L.A. -- is gearing up to premiere its highly anticipated third season on Nov. 12, and while it most certainly takes a village, the buck ultimately stops with him. The truth of the matter is that he's just a little tired.

Take this, a String Quartet plus vocal group of Single and Young Gay men, called Well-Strung was at Seattle's Neptune this past weekend and most of the audience didn't know who this group was up until a week earlier.

Are they a Boy band? Are they a Chamber Group or a Singing String quartet? All the above, with a little Il Divo added!  What a Revelation!


If they hadn’t come up with a surefire concept, who knows where Edmund Bagnell (first violin), Christopher Marchant (second violin), Daniel Shevlin (cello) and  Seattle Native, Trevor Wadleigh (viola) would be? All have classical music training and, with the exception of Marchant, who was performing 'Naked Boys Singing' in  PTown.

All Gay and single has they introduce each other and go right into a number.

(MNW) Sixth Circuit Loss Could be Supreme Court Win!

Well we just capped off the busiest month in marriage equality history, but it's looking like November's going to be just as busy. Two judges in the Sixth Circuit just ruled against equality, which sets us up for a Supreme Court ruling in the coming months. And no sooner did the Sixth Circuit uphold marriage bans than a judge in West Virginia issued a ruling of his own, explaining why they're wrong. Plus, judges overturned marriage bans in Kansas and Missouri, with some complicated rules about who can get married and when.

I confess I had never seen Chekhov's 'Uncle Vanya', but when I first heard of  'Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike' by Christopher Durang, the 2013 Tony winner of Best Play was based from it, I knew I wanted to see it some day.

Well, the good news it has made it to Seattle, thanks to ACT's new production I saw this past weekend. I am glad I did, and the production has many things that a Gay audience would love. A Gay Character, a Diva, Disney, and lots of Beefcake.

The story goes like this; Middle-aged siblings Vanya (Seattle Theater Legend, R. Hamilton Wright) and Sonia (Marianne Owen),  live in the family home in Pennsylvania. Vanya and Sonia have not had to grow up. After spending their adulthood looking after their now-dead parents, neither has a job, and money is provided by their movie star sister, Masha (Pamela Reed), who owns the house and pays the bills. Vanya (who is gay) and Sonia (who is forever reminding everyone that she is adopted) spend their days reflecting on their lost chances, Cassandra (Cynthia Jones), the cleaning lady, believes in Voodoo and is prone to making dire prophecies that no one believes.

This static environment is disrupted when Masha returns home, bringing with her a flurry of drama, an endless litany of insecurity, and a much younger, gorgeous, dimwitted and half-naked, lover named Spike the Sexy, William Poole). Spike meets a girl at the lake and introduces Nina (Sydney Andrews), an aspiring actress who provokes envy in Masha, lust in Spike and sympathy in Vanya (Nina even calls him 'Uncle Vanya'). Vanya also lusts after Spike.

My association with Alec Mapa goes back 7 years and it had been over a year since I last saw him in-person. When I heard Alec was going to be a guest and show his documentary/Concert film Baby Daddy at SLGFF, I jumped at the chance to bring my camera man, Zheng to Seattle's NW Film Forum as shared some laughs and the importance of Fatherhood.

The film,  Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, based on Mapa's titular one-man show, which covers much of Mapa's personal life, including his decision (along with husband Jamie Hebert) to adopt a child. You’ll laugh and even cry as “America’s Gaysian Sweetheart” mixes life stories with his signature brand of sass.

The Project

After 3 years of Researching and traveling from Seattle to San Diego and Back and from Seattle to New York and Back, I have had the budget of $400 per trip that last about a month each (going by Ride Share, Trades and Couch surfing). Now I need to complete it so the Book can be published in Early 2016.

My Research

I started researching this book as early as 1989 (even though I didn't know it at the time that I would take a series of trips of self-discovery and test of Self-Reliance, and as a Openly gay Man, a much bigger Test, and going against stereotypes) and 25 years later, I am getting more experiences in traveling on a low budget and going on the roller coaster of staying at Airports and Train Stations to 4 star Hotels. I have Traveled through Canada, the Northern half of the US to Boston and New York, as well as up and down the West Coast. One moving and Humorous story after another.

To finish this book, I need to finish traveling I still need to travel the SW (From Las Vegas to Texas), the Deep South (From Texas to Key West) and the SE (From Atlanta to Washington DC).
