(OUTview NW) RE-view: Gay Uncle Time is a Monthly event of Out with the OLD and IN with the NEW!

MKS
by MK Scott

After enjoying myself immensely at West Side Glory a few weeks back, I was even more excited to attend for the first time to Gay Uncle-Time with Jeffery Robert and Company.

What made this month so Delicious at Seattle's Monthly Celebration of Pop, Camp, Gay, Underground and Trash Culture from the 60's & 70's and BEYOND! was the celebration of the one and only Goddess Supreme of John Waters' Dreamlanders - Edith Massey. Actually, I was once a live-in "SLAVE" for someone who resembled her, (Save for the Book and movie version asking for a "Edith Massey Type").

Robert told the Story of  Massey through specially created posters of the Stars of John Waters, but it wasn't all about Divine or Edith Massey it also had Tab Hunter, Mink Stole and many more.

The audience at the Rendezvous was a mixture of young and old but true John Waters/Edie Massey Fans.

(Blank on Blank) Bette Davis on The Sexes!

Long before Sheryl Sandberg told us to Lean In, screen legend Bette Davis was charging men with changing how the sexes relate to each other.

“I think men have got to change an awful lot. I think somehow they still prefer the little woman. They're just staying way, way behind and so as a rule I think millions of women are very happy to be by themselves, they're so bored with the whole business of trying to be the little woman, when no such thing really exists anymore. It just simply doesn't,” said the celebrated actor and early Hollywood feminist in a previously lost interview, brought to life by PBS Digital Studios’ BLANK ON BLANK.

As an early advocate of gender awareness, Davis added, “This world's gone way beyond it. The real female should be partly male and the real male should be partly female anyway. So if you ever run into that in either sex you've run into something very, very fine, I think.”

In this week’s installment of PBS Digital Studios’ “Blank on Blank” from an interview recorded in 1963 by legendary Hollywood reporter Shirley Eder, Bette Davis gives her perspective on the battle of the sexes. She also reveals her experiences dealing with Hollywood executives while trying to balance her career with a “traditional” household in a male-dominated industry, and explains why being an intelligent female can be a “hindrance” in business.

(OUTview NW) RE-view: Chandelier Productions' Spring Awakening is an INCREDIBLE Triumph!

by MK Scott

With Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening heading back to Broadway, it is easy to appreciate the modern day classic and even seeing countless versions (Actually 3 so far) it is refreshing how fresh it can be.

Just imagine without Spring Awakening, we wouldn't have GLEE or LOOKING or even PITCH PERFECT, because the stars of the original Broadway cast was Lea Michelle (Wendla) who went on to mega success in Glee and the soon to be Scream Queens, but also Jonathan Groff (Melchior) who reteamed with Michelle in Glee and starred in HBO's Looking. Even Skylar Astin (Georg) went on to the highly Successful, Pitch Perfect franchise. The Tony winning, John Gallagher Jr, (Moritz) has stayed on Broadway with American Idiot and small TV roles.

You hear the claim all the time from anti-gay groups: children deserve a mom and a dad. But is it true? What does the science ACTUALLY say about same-sex parents? How do they compare to straight parents? And are they as statistically likely to have embarrassing taste in music?

(OUTview NW) RE-view: Intiman's John Baxter brings Scandal and Debate to this World Premiere!

Intiman
by MK Scott

If it is summer in Seattle it means it is Intiman's Summer Theater Festival time. The Festival brings new life for the Legacy of Intiman Playhouse. A little Intiman is better than no Intiman at all.

This is the 4th year of the festival and each year they stage a new production that has NW Roots. Two years ago was Stu for Silverton (the realife story of the transgender Mayor of a small Oregon Town) and Three years ago with Dan Savage's controversial play, "Miracle!".

This year the play to see is John Baxter is a Switch-Hitter by Ana Brown and Andrew Russell, and it focuses on the biggest scandal to ever Hit Gay Softball. Back in 2008, Seattle hosted the NAGAAA World series about playing for Gay team means you have to be Gay, if any teammate is Bi, you must declare who they are to the organization. In this actual case 5 players were called in questions and had to determine what their label was. Ultimately, three players were deemed at least "not gay enough," to play.

(GAY DAYS) Sonny leaves Salem for Europe and leaves behind a heartbroken Will – and Paul

Sonny needs a break from all of the Drama Queens!

The stage is set  for a blowout with Will after hapless Will’s latest scheme goes bust. Sonny calls uncle Victor about a job opportunity far, far away then Sonny asks Paul to meet him in the park.

We know it is Sonny’s goodbye and Paul is going to be broken-hearted but will they at least make out a little bit before saying goodbye.

He tells a shocked Will that he needs space and that he will let him know what he decides soon. He does not assure Will that he will return to him and Ari.

Before Sonny arrives home to break the news to Will, Will runs into Paul in the park and apologizes for hi latest misdeed involving Derrick.

Paul has the best line of the day: ‘Will, do you know how many things that you’ve apologized for over the past six months? I’m sorry doesn’t cut it.’ Will Sonny return to find Paul moved in on his side of the bed?

STAY TUNED!

(SCREEN JUNKIES) Honest Trailers - Kingsman: The Secret Service!

We'll be at Chicago Comic Con this week, come say Hi! ►► http://brk.cm/1JbEgIY

From not Guy Ritchie, comes the James Bond-ish spy comedy that caught everyone by surprise - because it was actually pretty good! Kingsman: The Secret Service!

(SOAP HUNK of the Week) Freddie Smith (Sonny, DAYS)

BETTER DAYS: It's been months since Sonny was this Happy!
This Week Freddie's Sonny left Days of our Lives with a promise to return. Let's recap on the character of Sonny:

Sonny's arrival in Salem, 4 years ago, came at the the time with Will Horton's eventual coming out. Will and Sonny connected (They share a Cousin or 2) and when Will was ready, he accepted Sonny's proposal of romance. But along the way, Will got his ex preggers which produced a daughter, Arianna. Gabi (the mother) was sent to prison for killing one of Will's Cousins (Big Family) and left Ari with Will and Sonny to raise (Instant Family). Will and Sonny rushed to the altar for the Best Wedding in Soap History. (Wedded Bliss?)

Will and Ari left town for Hollywood for a few months leaving Sonny all alone when Sonny's ex, (and Baseball star) Paul, arrived and wanted Sonny back. Sonny was willing to talk, but with Will returning, Sonny wanted to make his marriage work. Unknowingly, Will was busy interviewing a mystery subject, while Sonny had his own problems with Paul. Turns out Will's Mystery subject was Paul and with a burst of excitement allowed Paul to take him to bed! Paul didn't know Will was married and Sonny was having secret meetings with Paul too and never told Will about it. What a Mess! When Sonny discovered the affair, he eventually forgave this case of mistaken identity and inexperience. Will schemed to get Paul out of town and got worse when Paul turned out to be is long lost step-uncle (Big Family)! Will felt Paul was a threat to his marriage and Sonny struggled to deny his feelings for Paul and finally had the last straw with Will and needed "TIME" away. Will Sonny return to find Paul and Will an actual couple?Who will Sonny Choose? STAY TUNED!

Upon publication of John Lahr’s new biography of Tennessee Williams, the celebrated drama critic sits for a conversation with the playwright Tony Kushner.

“This is a masterpiece about a genius,” wrote Helen Mirren. “Only John Lahr, with his perceptions about the theater, about writers, about poetry and about people could have written this book.”

(GAY DAYS) Kate catches Paul with Derrick; Paul quickly figures out he was set up and confronts Will who later is forced to fess up to Sonny!

Now What?

A lot going on in the Will-Sonny-Paul-Derrick storyline with Paul and Derrick’s first night together, sadly, taking place off screen after their kiss in the park. But at least we get to see them clad in only towels when Kate drops by with work documents. Paul seems to not want Sonny to find out but too late for that with Kate chomping on the bit to blab. Sonny is trying to act like it doesn’t bother him – but his expressive eyes tell a different story.

Give it a rest Kate! How many times do we have to hear her tell Paul to stay away from Sonny and Will’s marriage. Trust me grandma, it ain’t worth saving! Some nice moments with Paul and John today and Paul is going to start calling him ‘dad.’ But when Paul meets with Derrick later, things don’t go as well. Poor Derrick is damned cute but seems kind of dumb. He was prepped by Will with background material like Sarah Palin was for the vice presidential debate. Like a certain pit bull with lipstick, Derrick could not quite pull it off and Paul figures out quickly there’s no way he would know what he knows about Paul without Will’s background material.

The whole gay triangle is ending with a fizzle. Sonny is going to leave town and both Will and Paul behind.

Will has become such an annoying character. Hopefully he will become less pathetic without having to play all insecure about Sonny and Will. Paul, meanwhile, will be able to grow as a gay man without being haunted by his ex.

With Sonny SOON gone, will Horita hit the sheets, because where is hate, there is Heat and Passion? STAY TUNED

When did TV first permit joking while gay? I've been combing through sitcoms of the 70s and 80s to figure out when queers stopped being a scary threat, and were allowed to be real people with love lives and funny punch lines. Here are just a few of my favorite early gay characters on sitcoms.

(MY VIEW) It's Okay to Be Gay, So Long As You're White!

by Adam Kirk Edgerton

Like most good white liberals in America (and David Brooks), I've been reading Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me. For white gay men, I think the book provides an alternative interpretation to the recent ruling on marriage equality that we are deeply afraid to discuss. The recent whitewashing of the Stonewall Riots makes it all the more important to question the predominance of whites within the current LGBT movement.

A cynical reading of Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States, is that the majority opinion is simply an extension of whiteness. Edie Windsor, of prior Supreme Court fame, was a rich old white lady who was told it wasn't enough to be rich and white; she also needed to be straight. James Obergefell, similarly, is a perfectly presentable (i.e. well-off) white plantiff. There's nothing at all outside of the "mainstream" about either of these two individuals except for the unfortunate fact that though they were born white in America, they were also born gay. This accident of birth meant that privileges and rights were denied to them that other whites received.

So we must ask ourselves a difficult question. Are we as a country advancing rights for all minorities equally, or are we just reshaping whiteness?

(Blank on Blank) Robin Williams on Masks!

“Comedy is there to basically show us we fart, we laugh. To make us realize we still are part animal.... So you don't take yourself seriously and destroy the species.”
- Robin Williams in 1991, as told to Lawrence Grobel

Comedian and actor Robin Williams died on August 11, 2014 at the age of 63. In tribute, we wanted to create an animated interview short that shed a light on both his brilliant, rapid-fire, comedic mind, as well as his sensitivity and concern for the world around him. We found the perfect outtakes--vintage Robin Williams--in two interviews recorded by Lawrence Grobel for a story he wrote for Playboy magazine in 1992.

This Robin Williams episode begins with his predictions for what the world would be like in 2020 (30 years in the future from when this was recorded) and his own philosophy of why comedy is needed to help us not take ourselves too seriously. Remember, he said: “we still are part animal.”

And then Robin Williams breaks down the comedy of sex and the universal faces people make during lovemaking. Classic. Needless to say, we loved animating the noises Robin Williams made. Finally he turns to the joys of having children and looks inward at his own shortcomings and, of course, being hairy.

Enjoy, everybody. RIP, Robin. We miss you.

(DEFINING MARRIAGE) Know who your Enemies Are!

by Matt Baume

“Marriage felt impossible for so long. This impossible thing you’re never going to get, so don’t bother asking for it,” said Dan Savage. But: “it doesn’t get better for us in a vacuum. It gets better FOR us because straight people get better ABOUT us.”

I chatted with Dan and with Fred Karger about what life was like for gays in the 1970s, and their two very different ways of dealing with it: for Fred, a gay Republican, there was safety in hiding. But Dan, despite being raised in a Roman Catholic household, came emphatically out of the closet at an early age and let the straight world know that any discomfort they felt was their own doing.

From within the belly of the beast, Fred was able to rally opposition to homophobic legislator John Briggs long before it was safe for him to do so publicly. But ultimately, hiding proved far more destructive than coming out.

After all, if queers were ever going to demand full equality, first they’d have to reveal themselves. They’d have to exist. Then they could get down to the work of making things better.

(SHOWCASE) Playing Gay!

Playing Gay: How America Came Out on Television is a documentary film that needs the support of the LGBT community and its allies in order to be made. The film will tell -- for the first time -- the story of how television changed the way America views LGBT people.

There has been a major shift in the hearts and minds of America over the past four decades. Television has been both the catalyst for and a powerful reflection of Americans’ views on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

We are lining up interviews with actors and directors who have played key roles in the history of LGBT people on TV. But in order to shoot and edit this film, we need you.

Without you, we won't be able to tell this story! Please Support this Project!
