LIVE: See “8″ live online tonight starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Bomer, Matthew Morrison and more!
Click to this link to the American Foundation of Equal Rights (AFER) website.
The play, written by Dustin Lance Black, is based on the transcripts of the trial which led to an appeals court striking down California’s Proposition 8 last year.
You won’t want to miss it with such dreamboats as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Bomer, Matthew Morrison, Kevin Bacon, Rory O’Malley, Chris Colfer and Jesse Tyler Ferguson in the cast.
Others in the cast include Jane Lynch, Jamie Lee Curtis, George Takei, John C. Reilly, Cleve Jones, Campbell Brown and Martin Sheen.
The play is framed by the trial’s historic closing arguments in June 2010, and features the best arguments and testimony from both sides. Scenes include flashbacks to some of the more memorable moments from trial.
Academy Award-winning screenwriter and AFER Founding Board Member Black based it on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
The one-night only reading is being directed by Rob Reiner, a founding AFER member, and will take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.
The play will be livestreamed over the internet and can be viewed beginning at 7:45 p.m. PST at www.youtube.com/AmericanEqualRights.

(Marriage News Watch): Will Prop 8 Ruling Protect Marriage in Washington?
by Matt Baume
Prop 8's unconstitutional, Washington passing its marriage equality bill, Illinois just introduced a bill of their own, we're making more progress in Maryland, and now New Mexico has pulled a proposed anti-gay marriage law. I told you 2012 was going to be busy.

(Marriage News Watch): What's Next for Prop 8?
by Matt Baume
Marriage Newswatch
Prop 8's finished -- or at least, oral arguments in the appeals court are all over. Now a ruling on California's marriage ban could come at any minute. A couple in Hawaii sues for marriage; Scotland may reform its marriage laws; and Australian legislators are moving towards equality but the battle's still far from over.

(Marriage News Watch): Stepping up the Assault on DOMA!
by Matt Baume
Marriage News Watch
We're counting down to the next ruling in the Prop 8 case. A Republican-backed bill in New Hampshire would replace marriage with civil unions for everyone -- including siblings. Get ready for a showdown on the Defense of Marriage Act, and things are heating up in Ohio.

OFFICIAL: Star-studded Broadway Premiere of “8”!
Last Night the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact launched the all-star Broadway premiere of “8”to a packed and enthusiastic audience. The play, which chronicles the historic trial in the federal legal challenge to California’s Proposition 8, was written by AFER Founding Board Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black and directed by Tony Award-winning actor and director Joe Mantello, reports Greg in Hollywood.
The production is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the case filed by AFER to overturn Prop. 8, which eliminated the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry in California. Prop. 8 was ruled unconstitutional in August 2010.

VICTORY: Federal Judge Rules That Prop 8 Trial Videotapes Can Be Released; Places Limited Stay on Ruling!
Chief U.S. District Court Judge James Ware has ruled that videotapes of the federal case challenging Proposition 8 can be released to the public but has placed a limited stay on the ruling, Wilshire and Washington reports.
Ware wrote that he found "no compelling reasons" to continue sealing the tapes.
He wrote, "Foremost among the aspects of the federal judicial system that foster public confidence in the fairness and integrity of the process are public access to trials and public access to the record of judicial proceedings. Consequently, once an item is placed in the record of judicial proceedings, there must be compelling reasons for keeping that item secret."

Ware's order was stayed until September 30, giving Prop 8 supporters time to appeal.
