(OUTscene NW) THEATER RE-view: Theater 22 Returns with the FAB, The Lisbon Traviata!

Robert Falk
Christensen and Mulholland in “The Lisbon Traviata.”
by MK Scott

Seattle has a new Gay Theater group and the much anticipated followup to 5th of July for the Theater 22 happened this past week. What I like about Theater 22 is like Portland's legendary Triangle Productions started out staging their productions at various theaters all over town. The inaugural season of T22 started at West of Lenin this past fall for the acclaimed, 5th of July, now has secured Richard Hugo House to stage, Terrence McNally's The Lisbon Traviata is a play by Terrence McNally. The play premiered Off-Broadway in 1989. It revolves around several opera fans, especially of the opera singer Maria Callas, and their gay relationships.

McNally loves to combine classic Art with Gay relationships and continues the trend here.

(OUTscene NW) Concert RE-view: SMC's FALLING in LOVE AGAIN Triumphs in the End!

Niven's Gad

by MK Scott

It is hard to fathom that it has been 12 years since the Seattle Men's Chorus had performed at the Paramount Theater. It was the Sing for the Cure in June 2001 with special guest, Kristin Chenoweth. Sing for the Cure was about the fight against Breast Cancer commissioned in 2000 by Turtle Creek Chorale of Dallas. It was performed in Act 2 with a Mixed chorus, which led a year later to the creation of the Seattle Women's Chorus. The Glorious Chenoweth headlined in Act One.

Fast forward to 2011, when SMC (along with Boston Gay Chorus) commissioned, For a Look or a Touch, that Premiered during their salute to Germany Concert in April 2011.

Obviously, this would be repeated just 3 years later in the Falling in Love Again concert this past weekend for One Night Only.

(SIFF 2014) 2014 Golden Space Needle and Competition Awards!

Boyhood was a Big winner and  this took 10 years to make!
SEATTLE -- June 8, 2014 -- The 40th Seattle International Film Festival, the largest and most highly attended film festival in the United States, today announced the winners of the SIFF 2014 Golden Space Needle and Competition Awards. The awards were presented at a ceremony and brunch held at the Space Needle. The 25-day festival, which began May 15, featured 452 films representing 83 countries, including 44 World Premieres (20 features, 24 shorts), 30 North American Premieres (22 features, 8 shorts), 14 US Premieres (8 features, 6 shorts), and over 770 Festival screenings and events. Additionally, SIFF brought in more than 350 filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals, setting a new guest record.

Carl Spence, SIFF's Artistic Director, says, "This has been an extraordinary 40th anniversary Festival. From welcoming back Richard Linklater to Seattle with his groundbreaking epic Boyhood, to honoring Laura Dern, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Quincy Jones for their masterful work, to welcoming Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who has brought Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to life for years, to the hundreds of first-time directors making their debut, it's been another year of indelible cinematic experiences. Every year, it's so thrilling to see our legendary Seattle audiences discover our lineup of films and wholly immerse themselves in the Festival experience. Congratulations to every single film and filmmaker that we had the opportunity to present!"

Adds Mary Bacarella, SIFF's Managing Director, "Beginning with our big Opening Night announcement about the purchase of the SIFF Cinema Uptown and lease on the historic Egyptian Theatre, this Festival has blown away all of my expectations. Each day (and there's 25 of them!) seemed to bring even more exciting events and can't-miss moments. I'm thrilled to be leading SIFF in this time of growth, and can't wait to get to work on bringing incredible films to two neighborhood cinemas."

(ED...4 LGBT Films were nominated and 2 wins with Best Short-Documentary with Maikaru and a Special Mention for Live Action Short, Aban + Khorshid.)

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: As a Novice of Shakespeare, even SSC's King Lear made me 'MAD"!

Riedmann (as Edmund) plots against Lear (Kremer) Photo by John Ulman
by MK Scott

I must confess, I am not a Shakespeare fan, (except maybe parts of  Midsummer Night's Dream and Taming of the Shrew), so when my friend urged me to see SSC's King Lear, I needed to give it a try and give Lear a chance.

To me Shakespeare is like a foreign language, it is hard to interpret what the actors are really saying. Like British TV on PBS, you are asking, 'Where are the Sub-titles"?

If not the Language, then you can still look forward to stunning period costumes, and an elaborate set. Lear's costumes were not period, the guys wore black trousers, instead of Tights, and the women wore plain greyish gowns, that looked like a costume for a woman's choir. The set was non existent and had black wall, with scaffolding wrapped in Plastic. Even my friend, the Lear insider, agreed with my observations.

This is why I prefer opera better, because they try to do a great job in improving the original material that engage their audience from Costumes, Set, and sub-titles for where new fans can be entertained.

King Lear tells the story of The title character descends into madness after disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all. The play is based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king.

Chacon (as Edgar) shares a cell with his Father Lear (Kremer) Photo by John Ulman

I found Eric Riedmann's performance as Edmund as the most  intriguing especially when he is with Jorge Chacon, who plays his half-brother, Edgar. I saw an incestuous, Bromance between the 2 men as well as the actors that was homoerotic. Too Bad, Edmund's goal is to discredit Edgar and the fact they are bothers to begin with. No wonder Lear went mad. The End.

(OUTscene NW) Re-view: Artswest's HAIR is by far the Most Daring Production Yet!

By MK Scott

As someone who re-viewed the 2010 National Tour of the Revival of HAIR and was enlightened with a whole new re-written show that revealed the Trio of Berger, Sheila, and Claude to be in a Bi-sexual Triangle as well as the Man-crush of Woof for Mick Jagger and quickly to shrug of 'I am NOT Gay' despite his mannerisms and action.

Wow, I was even more mesmerized with the Current production staged by David Gassner for ARTSWEST, this past weekend. This production by far was the Gayest and Best yet.

Berger (played by Jeff Orton, who previously played Gay in The Little Dog Laughed)  was Flamboyant from the moment he appeared on stage.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Seattle Men's Chorus (W/ Special Guest, Megan Hilty) 'Totally WICKED' was 'Totally FUN'

Jeffery Erickson (NOT Glinda)          /Pai
by MK Scott

Stephen Schwartz is an American Composer who gave us 3 very different Broadway classics as well as a Lyricist for a few Disney Classics. WICKED is his greatest achievement and was the center of last weekend for Seattle Men's chorus's Totally Wicked at Seattle's McCaw Hall.

Seattle bred and Broadway star, Megan Hilty (Smash, Sean Saves the World) returned after appearing in the Holiday Glee Concert in 2010.

The second act was FUN and had one exciting number after another. The first Act not so much. One reason could be that it focused too much on Schwartz' shows that he did after PIPPIN and Before WICKED. Have you heard of his 1986 show, Children of Eden or his 1989 show, The Baker's Wife or 1974's The Magic Show? I didn't think so.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: SPT's SantaLand Diaries, a Hilarious view of being an Actor in NY (During the Holidays)!

by MK Scott

About 10 years ago, I was a struggling actor living in NYC and as I hit the pavement from one casting director after another, with a goal to get a walk on role in a Soap, but I was turned down. It was hard to succeed in a pool of actors all wanting to a get a big break. To make ends meat, I worked 3 jobs and 2 out of 3 was for low minimum wage. One of those jobs was the Original Macy's store, not in any glamorous department but the COAT Dept!

So I can relate to writer/actor David Sedaris's 1992 essay, "Santa Land Diaries", who wrote the piece as a true and humorous account of his stint working as a Christmas elf in "SantaLand" at Macy's department store. Sedaris launched his career as a humorist with his 1992 reading of the essay on National Public Radio; since then, it has been adapted and performed by theatres and playhouses across the United States, including the Seattle Public Theater.

Patrick Lennon as David, wants to get a acting role on a soap, but is cast as an elf at Macys. In the current stereotypes of a white Santa, David brings out the Racism of parents wanting a white, black or latin Santa.

The Play, thanks to Lennon's take on the role was performed with humor and camp. I really believed he could be Sedaris.

Santa Land Diaries continues at the Seattle Public Theater Through December 24th. For Tix click Here.

(OUTscene NW) PRE-view: CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE Flys IN and OUT of Seattle, This Weekend Only!

Now in its 5th year of touring multiple simultaneous productions, CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE is “so full of energy it could end our dependence on oil” according to the New York Daily News and “stuffed with so much holiday cheer and audacious acts, Scrooge would exit with a big ol’ smile on his face” proclaims the Erie Times News about this “Broadway-worthy spectacle”.

Renowned director Neil Goldberg re-imagines the holiday season with sparkle and suspense one can only dream of in a HOLIDAZE. An international cast of multi-talented and brilliantly costumed artists come to life and perform astonishing feats of disbelief. Experience gingerbread men flipping mid air, toy soldiers marching on thin wires, snowmen daringly balancing, icemen powerfully sculpting, penguins spinning, puppets dancing and reindeer soaring high above a landscape of holiday wonderment. An original music score and some seasonal favorites accompany hundreds of spectacular costumes and holiday dreams in a setting of gigantic gifts, colossal candy canes and 30-foot towering soldiers. The perfect way to come in from the cold, forget the holiday stresses and rediscover the magic of the season.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Artswest's Little Women, the Broadway Musical, works better as light Holiday fare!

Frasca has that Judy Look and Voice/ AWP
by MK Scott

Most are familiar with the classic story of Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, but only a few are aware of the Broadway Musical (with a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland.) that had a short run in 2005 and closed after 55 Previews and 137 performances, starring Broadway star, Sutton Foster as Jo, singing the classic,  "Astonishing!" Now Seattle's Artswest Playhouse has restaged it and as a Holiday piece it works.

The story is familiar and focuses on the four March sisters — brassy, tomboy-like, aspiring writer Jo (EmilyRose Frasca),  romantic Meg (Marissa Ryder), pretentious Amy (Maddy Kennard), and kind-hearted Beth (Amanda L. Carp) — and their beloved Marmee (Cindy Bradder), at home in Concord, Massachusetts while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view :Villiage People and KC team up for Boogie Night at Seattle's Snoqualmie!

by MK Scott
Even Though I was just a kid, I was so attracted to the sounds of Disco, and my personal favorites were the Bee Gees, Donna Summer and of course, the Village People and KC and the Sunshine Band. So when I heard they would be playing a Double Bill at Seattle's Snoqualmie Casino, I said Hell Yeah, I will be coming to potentially the Gayest night at SNO for the first time since Berlin in the Spring of 2012.

I was surprised when the Village People (the ultimate Kings of Disco) came out first and performed
Macho ManSan Francisco (You've Got Me), and In Hollywood.

But when only 2 out of the 6 members are Original members Felipe Rose (Indian) and Alex Brilley(Marine) and then have 4 New members Ray Simpson (Cop, since 1987),  Eric Anzalone (Biker) and Recently Jim Newman (Cowboy)  and Bill Whitefield (Construction Worker).

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: NW Native, Michael Buble' goes BIG at Seattle's Key Arena!

by MK Scott

NW Native, Michael Buble' performed at Seattle's Key Arena this past Friday. Buble', 38, was Bred in near by Burnaby, B.C.

Usually I don't mention an opening act especially if I have never heard of them, but this time Naturally 7 was a perfect match for Buble'. According to other members of the audience, N7, has toured with Buble' before. The 7-member  a Capella group is a band that uses their voices as the instruments.  Opening with the 1972 R & B classic, Summer Breeze and ending with Stevie Wonder's Happy Street with Stevie projected on the big screen during the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah moments.

After a brief intermission, the mood was set for Buble'. A little bit Sinatra, a little Elvis, and a little bit Newton, Buble' is the new King of the standards.

The production was top notch from the beginning with Streams of Flames coming from the stage floor as Buble' came out in a Black tux singing,  Fever.

Surrounded by a full orchestra, Buble continued with Haven't Met You Yet, Try a Little Tenderness,
You Make Me Feel So Young, Moondance,  and Come Dance with Me.
