SNAG: Orson Welles' Oscar for Citizen Kane Fetches $861K!

An anonymous bidder shelled out $861,000 for the Oscar that Orson Welles won for his original screenplay of Citizen Kane in 1942. The golden statuette was auctioned off in Los Angeles yesterday and attracted bidders from around the world, including magician David Copperfield, who was ultimately outbid by the unidentified winner, reports the AP. It's not an Oscar record: Michael Jackson once paid $1.5 million for the best-film award given to Gone With the Wind.

DEAL: Malt Whisky Fetches Record $73K!

A 55-year-old bottle of Scotch has sold for the princely sum of $72,630 at auction, reports Bloomberg. The price makes the bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve the most expense single malt whisky ever sold, notes Deadline.

What's with the weird name? The whisky honors the oldest living Scot, 110-year-old Janet Sheed Roberts, who is the granddaughter of the founder of the Glenfiddich distillery, adds the BBC. “It’s not often a whisky of this stature comes up at auction,” says a specialist at the Bonhams auction house in Edinburgh. “The rarity and quality of the liquid, the exquisite bespoke packaging and the story behind its creation makes this a collectible that’s hard to value.” Eleven more bottles will be sold at auction over the next year, with the proceeds going to international charity Water Aid.

ICONIC: Liz Taylor's Wardrobe, Warhol Fetch Huge $2.6M!

The record-breaking auction of Elizabeth Taylor's gems was followed by the record-breaking sale of part of her wardrobe, in bidding that proved to be just as fierce and racked up a staggering $2.6 million. All 67 lots, including designer gowns, feathery capes, and the wedding dress she wore for her second marriage to Richard Burton, were sold at the Christie's auction; some items fetched more than 60 times the auction house's estimates, Bloomberg reports.

Included in the auction was a 1964 Andy Warhol lithograph of the star, inscribed "To Elizabeth, with much love." It sold for $662,500, more than 10 times Christie's estimate. "To own a piece worn by Elizabeth Taylor, the last of the glamorous, great movie stars, is priceless,” said a fashion industry consultant who attended the sale. “There are people who buy it as collectors. Vintage clothing is like buying art these days, it will only increase in value."

SOLD: Liz Taylor Gem Sale Smashes Records!

The sale of Elizabeth Taylor's legendary gem collection shattered records—and estimates—at Christie's in New York last night. Amid competition so fierce that bids sometimes jumped by a million dollars, the $116 million sale of the late star's gems broke the world record for a private collection of jewels along with six other records, including the price for a pearl, Forbes reports. "La Peregrina," a pearl owned by a succession of Spanish kings between 1582 and 1808, sold for $11.8 million. A 33.19-carat diamond ring given to Taylor by Richard Burton—whom she married twice—fetched $8.8 million. Auctioneers had predicted that the entire sale of 80 lots would fetch only around $30 million. More of Taylor's belonging will be sold later this week, with part of the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. The star died of heart failure earlier this year at the age of 79—and was fashionably late for her own funeral.

STEAL: Da Vinci Sells for Only $21K?

Christie's auction house let a "lost" Leonardo Da Vinci portrait fly out the door for a mere $21,000, according to art experts with a growing group of supporters. The portrait was from a 500-year-old book about the duke of Milan and likely features an illegitimate daughter, according to Oxford art historian Martin Kemp. "We knew it came from a book, you have the stitch holes and can see the knife cut. Finding it is a miracle in a way. I was amazed," said Kemp, who has studied the master's works for some 40 years.

He has "no doubt" La Bella Princessa is a da Vinci. Christie's obtained the portrait in 1998, and believed it was created by a 19th century "Nazarene" German artist, although this was disproved later by carbon dating, reports MSNBC. The work was sold to an art dealer in 1998 for $21,000 and resold later to a collector for $19,000. If the work is by the master, it could be worth some $150 million, according to ART News. A growing number art historians believe the work is a Da Vinci, though several top experts disagree. A famed "art detective" claimed to have found D a Vinci's print on the work, but even such forensic proof can be faked, as shown recently in a scathing New Yorker article. The mystery endures.

SOLD: Marty McFly Shoes Sell for ... $37K!

Quick, what’s the most you’re willing to pay for a pair of shoes? If you’re figure was less than five-digits long, then you can’t hope to hang with British rapper Tinie Tempah, who last night spent a whopping $37,500 for the first pair of “Nike Mags,” a limited edition replica of the shoes Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future Part II, TMZ reports.

Of course, Tinie didn’t lay down that kind of dough on eBay, where the shoes are selling in the more affordable four-digit price range. He bought the shoes at a live charity auction in LA, and they even came with a replica "plutonium case" from the movie, notes the Hollywood Reporter. A spokesman says the rapper’s a serious shoe collector, and fell in love with the, er, futuristic light-up sneakers at first sight. All the money goes to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

SOLD: Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Jacket Sells for $1.8M!

(AP) – Just days after the anniversary of his death, a famed black-and-red calfskin jacket that Michael Jackson wore in the classic Thriller video has sold at auction for $1.8 million. The jacket is one of two Jackson wore during the filming of the 1983 Thriller video. The buyer is Texas commodities trader Milton Verret, who says it will be sent on tour and used as a fundraising tool for children's charities. A portion of the sale price will go to the Shambala Preserve, a big cat sanctuary caring for two tigers Jackson once owned.

SOLD: A Piece of Movie History Sells for $5.6M!

Actress Debbie Reynolds decided to unload the 3,500 movies costumes she has amassed over the years, and one of the very first ones to sell brought in quite the price: $5.6 million. That was what one lucky bidder spent to acquire Marilyn Monroe's white "subway" dress, which she famously wore in the Seven Year Itch. CNN reports that Reynolds was in tears when the bidding ended after 20 minutes, with the buyer paying $4.6 million for the dress and another $1 million to the auction house. The dress was only expected to fetch $2 million; the previous record for a Marilyn dress was $1.26 million, for the gown she wore while singing "Happy Birthday" to JFK.

Three more Monroe dresses, worn in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, There's No Business Like Show Business, and River of No Return brought in another $2.7 million. Other big-ticket items: a bowler hat worn by Charlie Chaplin ($135,300), riding pants worn by Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet ($73,800), and a Wizard of Oz test costume consisting of Judy Garland's blue cotton dress ruby slippers ($1.75 million). It was the first in a series of auctions of Reynolds' treasures; though she had hoped to house the clothes in a museum, the cost of their care became too much for her.

SOLD: Beatrice's Awful Hat Sells for $131K!

The rapture didn't happen Saturday, but humanity might be doomed anyway: That thing, er, "unique sculptural celebratory headpiece," that Princess Beatrice wore to the royal wedding sold on eBay for nearly $131,000 yesterday. Sadly, the winning bidder currently remains anonymous, E! reports. On the bright side, the AP notes, proceeds go to UNICEF and Children in Crisis.
