(Eddie's RE-view) RPDR Season 5 - Episode 6!

by Eddie Walker

Titled, “Can I Get An Amen?”, Episode 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race - Season 5 had the girls, literally, singing for their lives. It all started with the mini-challenge, where the girls had to apply their makeup in the dark. When the lights came on, not one of the girls could say they looked presentable. Detox, however, could say she looked acceptable. And so did RuPaul, declaring Detox the winner of the mini-challenge.

For the main challenge, the girls had to record a “We Are The World” styled video, titled “Can I Get An Amen?” wearing their best 80s look. As the winner of the mini-challenge, Detox had to put the girls into three teams. In a very calculated move, Detox teamed Alyssa Edwards and Coco Montrese together to sing Verse One; Ivy Winters, Jade Jolie, and Jinkx Monsoon together to sing Verse Two; and Alaska, Roxxy Andrews, with herself to sing the Bridge.

Detox’s main motivation for teaming Alyssa and Coco together and giving them Verse One to sing, was to throw them off their game. The trick worked on Coco, but not Alyssa. Although Alyssa couldn’t carry a note even if her life depended on it, she sold it like it was a Grammy winning performance. Whereas, Coco let the shady move get the best of her, and she pouted the entire time.

For the Second Verse, when Ivy Winters and Jinkx Monsoon started singing, the only thing on my mind was, ‘I need to go to church.’ Ivy Winters demonstrated an ability to harmonize that made her stand out front and center. Next to Ivy, the other girls all sounded as if they were tone-death. Tone-death or not, Jinkx’s performance made you feel the emotion of the song, especially when she held that note for almost a minute. I was screaming at the television, “Go Whitney. Go Patti. Go Mariah. Get busy.” The same could not be said of Jade Jolie. She looked like a shrinking violet next Ivy and Jinkx, and she refused to project her voice.

Regarding the Bridge performed by Alaska, Detox, and Roxxy, all I can say is that I am neither impressed nor depressed by their performance. The Bridge consist of only five words, which I think made it almost impossible to demonstrate any harmony or voice range. With only five words, It also made it unlikely that they would ‘fuck it up’. And they didn’t. If nothing else, the trio were fun to watch.

For the runway challenge, the girls had to put together looks showcasing their favorite body part. Let’s start with who hit the mark for this challenge. Roxxy Andrews and Detox killed it. Roxxy Andrews came out in a tangerine, fuschia, purple, bathing suit showcasing some stunning curves. Detox wore a black leather corset dress, that tied in the back, and revealed all of the butt. I couldn’t tell if it was real or fake; it looked so picture-perfect. I’m sure one of these girls would have been named the winner, if they would have did better on the “Can I Get An Amen?” video. Either way, neither one ended up in the bottom two.

Ivy Winters came out in a dress made of 8 x 10 glossies of her face, thus her favorite body part. I thought it was cute, but not best. She was the best when it came to the “Can I Get An Amen?” video, and RuPaul named her the winner of this week’s main challenge.

As for the rest of the girls…RuPaul deemed Jinkx Monsoon safe, although her matronly runway look was third to worst. Alaska was also deemed safe, but was warned not to bore the judges with the same look again. Alyssa could have ended up in the bottom two for her horrific singing. Luckily for her, she did everything else well, including wearing a kimono-styled look showcasing her legs for the runway challenge. Again, it wasn’t the best look, but it wasn’t the worst either. For this reason, RuPaul deemed Alyssa safe also.

Coco Montrese and Jade Jolie ended up in the bottom two, which is no surprise. From their dismal performance on the video shoot, it seems as though their hearts are not in the competition. They just don’t want it bad enough; they’re just not that hungry. And you have to be hungry to be America’s Next Drag Super Star. And you have to know how to put a look together too, which these girls did not demonstrate in this week’s runway challenge. Coco came out in this Halloween-like costume that had an exposed heart and ribs. I think she was going for an edgy, yet sensitive look, but the judges wasn’t going for it at all. Jade wore a ‘hairy’ rainbow-bright inspired look that she said showcased her arms. I think it just showcases the fact that the girl has issues. Definitely taste level issues. Maybe daddy issues. Who knows? But there is definitely something wrong with the girl if she thinks this look is going to fly.

Our bottom two girls had to ‘lip-sync for their life’ to the Pointer Sisters, “I’m So Excited”. This is a Coco Montrese era song, and she let it be known giving a better lip-sync than Jade Jolie. RuPaul declared Coco Montrese the winner of the lip-sync, giving her another chance at the crown. Jade Jolie had to ‘sashay away’ leaving us seven girls left from the original fourteen. We’re now down to the best of the best, where we separate the ‘queens in crowns’ from the ‘toddlers in tiaras’. May the best wo-man win.
