(MK 20) OUTview Debuts with a Scandal!

By MK Scott
OUTview Publisher

I am not just celebrating my 20th Anniversary this month, but also OUTview's 2nd. On January 31, 2009 the OUTview Brand made a smashing debut on the (Now Defunct) Q-Radio with a Special report on a Hot news item regarding Portland's newly sworn in Gay Mayor, Sam Adams.

If you have been out of touch with your TV, Internet, Facebook friends, Newspapers, then you haven’t heard about the explosion that hit Portland, OR before the day of the inauguration of our first black president. The first gay mayor of a major US City, Sam Adams (No, NOT the beer) was forced to admit publicly that he lied when asked during, campaigning for Mayor in 2007, if he had an improper sexual relationship with an 18 yr old Legislative intern (Beau Breedlove) in 2005. This prompted a firestorm of negative press and a combination of both gays and straights expressing there fear and hate toward Adams. The storm raged on and hit its boiling point when Portland’s only Gay publication, Just Out, requested that Adams should resign immediately. A majority of the GLBT community protested Just Out was not their voice and it isn’t what the whole community believes. Elliot Young (pictured), a Professor at Portland’s Lewis and Clark College, was one of the first to start the ‘Support Sam’ campaign, which in 4 Days had over 3,400 supporters. Young had been on a media tour and had given numerous interviews all over town in 4 days. I was lucky to get him, even on a Sunday!

Just before the interview, Young learned that Adams had decided because of the Support Campaign(s) that he would not resign.

I had invited Portland activist, Stephen Cassell (Creator of the "I am with Sam" Facebook page, but he declined). Later in the week, KOIN TV had posted a news Item that Breedlove was a convicted Felon, I posted this item on My Personal Facebook page. Cassell sent a public letter to his group calling me a "Tabloid" Journalist. The next day, Erika Hedrick of the 'In defense of Sam' forward Cassell's letter to her group!

I sent the following rebuttal:
When I heard of the Breaking News story of Beau Breedlove was a convicted felon, which came from a reputable news source (KOIN 6). The only reaction was from Stephen Cassell, (whom with a knee-jerk reaction), proceeded to write an open letter to me and send it to the members of his FB group page ‘I am with Sam’. The next day, Erika Hedrick of ‘in defense of Sam’ placed the letter on her page. From that I got a ‘very’ long e-mail from a friend of Beau’s responding to a letter that shouldn’t have been written in the first place.

Later that night, I saw both KOIN and KATU news where the lead story should have been about communications director, Wade Nkrumah, resignation. That should have been the big story on KOIN 6’s website, not the story about Beau’s past.

But you should know that being in the news media and if there is a big story (e.g. sex scandal) the media in all spectrum will delve in the past of everybody involved. This is the essence of the Media to be fair and in partial, but also ratings come to play.

The next night, KATU interviewed Beau Breedlove’s dad, where he practically called Sam ‘a Pedophile’. I won’t even touch that, because I think that KATU story was much worse. I’m shocked that no one has even reacted to that story.

It turns out I was right, a fews months later, Breedlove posed nude for Unzipped Magazine and the Oregon Attorney General dropped all charges against Adams, due to Breedlove's  incredibility with the Unzipped appearance AND the Criminal record. Since then, 2 recall campaigns failed, Adams is still in office, and Cassell never apologized.

I spoke with Elliot Young last week about what has happened in the Past 2 Years: "Well two years later, and two failed recall efforts later, it reminds me that the recall effort was a huge waste of time and effort. Sam is mayor, and whether you like what he has done as mayor or not, none of that has anything to do with who he may have kissed in a bathroom stall. I'm just glad that there were so few people obsessed with Sam's private life in Portland that they couldn't even manage to get enough signatures for a recall. Portland rules."

Thank You Adams and Young for making the Launch of OUTview a smashing success!

CULTURE: GLAAD Slams SNL for 'Estro-Maxx' Ad Mocking Transgender Women

During Saturday night's Saturday Night Live, a parody ad was featured mocking the daily lives of transgender women who take hormone therapy.

Writes GLAAD: "The piece was a mock commercial for estrogen replacement therapy and featured men with facial hair wearing dresses, meant to represent transgender women. This segment cannot be defended as 'just a joke' because there was no 'joke' to speak of. The attempted comedy of the skit hinges solely on degrading the lives and experiences of transgender women. Dehumanizing holding people up for ridicule simply on the basis of their identity fuels a dangerous and hurtful climate and puts people in danger, especially given how infrequently the media shines a fair and accurate light on the lives of transgender people."

GLAAD has called on Comcast and NBC to apologize, remove the segment from Hulu, and all future airings.

With knowing many Trans, I didn't find this offensive, (I laughed), but I feared of a possible backlash like with "Ticked off Trannies".

CULTURE: Conservative Group Claim Glee Magazine Cover Is Propaganda!

Wingnut Brent Bozell, president of strictly conservative organization Media Research Center, wants you to believe that the sweet and heart-warming photo of Chris Colfer and Darren Criss (as seen on the cover of a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly) is nothing but so-called gay propaganda. He writes in his column on Newsbusters:

As you might suspect, Entertainment Weekly didn't plan to debate gay teen propaganda, but to encourage it, energetically. Not a single soul had anything critical to say. Not even a question. If this magazine weren't so earnestly in the tank, the story could come with a disclaimer: “This issue is an advertisement bought and paid for by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.”

Writer Jennifer Armstrong summed it up like this: “The good news: Young gay characters are on a momentous roll after years of stops and starts.” EW championed under the inside headline how “networks are making up for years of on-air silence and providing inspiration for real-life youth (and parents) still searching for answers.” Armstrong says gay characters are “not just an accepted, but expected part of teen-centric television.” (Emphasis hers.) They are not celebrating diversity. They are intimidating dissidents

In their Gay Teen Timeline, we hear the gay actors proclaiming the lack of opposition. “We never received a negative word,” says the gay actor on ABC's 1994 bomb “My So-Called Life.” The gay teen on ABC's “Ugly Betty” insisted “99 percent of the public response was positive.” Translation: get in line.

ENTERTAINMENT: Meet the New Superman: British Actor Henry Cavill!

The new Superman will have to make sure his British accent doesn't show: Henry Cavill, a 27-year-old Brit known primarily for his role on Showtime's The Tudors, has been chosen to play the superhero in the Warner Bros. movie due out next year, reports the Los Angeles Times. The flick is being directed by Zack Snyder.

SOAP Q: Today, Michael reveals he was raped in Oz!

"We needed a catalyst, and we realized we had a great one in Abby [Michael's stripper friend played by Andrea Bogart]. Michael will see Abby about to be raped by her ex-boyfriend and he flashes back to what happened to him in prison and goes berserk. In that flashback, we'll see Michael's assault in more detail, though nothing gratuitous or titillating. We wanted to make it clear the assault on Abby has visual and physical parallels to the assault on Michael. The incident with Abby — Michael does save her before she's actually raped — will serve as a kind of catharsis for Michael, and he is finally able to admit to Jason [Steve Burton] that he was indeed raped. He then tells his parents, Sonny [Maurice Benard] and Carly [Laura Wright]."

Viewers have suspected it for months, now General Hospital is finally coming clean. On Todays episode of the ABC soap, high school senior Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) will confess to a secret that's been haunting him since he was imprisoned last spring — he was brutally raped by a fellow inmate. TV Guide Magazine spoke with GH's Emmy-winning head writer Bob Guza about the big reveal and where Michael's sad, shocking saga goes from here.

OBIT: Designer Charles Nolan Dies at 53!

Designer Charles Nolan has died at the age of 53, the NYT reports:

The cause was cancer of the head and neck, said Andrew Tobias, the financial writer, who was Mr. Nolan’s partner of 16 years.

Early in his career, Mr. Nolan was a major force behind the expansion of mainstream American sportswear labels like Bill Blass, Ellen Tracy and Anne Klein. But he was perhaps better known publicly for the work he did dressing private clients, including many prominent women on the political scene.

Mr. Nolan was fond of highlighting how wearable his clothes were by hiring nonprofessional models, like a retired New York City police detective, the captain of a Fire Island ferry and the swimmer Dara Torres.

But his most surprising political statement, at least in the eyes of his colleagues on Seventh Avenue, came in 2003, when he abruptly quit as the head designer of Anne Klein, where he had led a successful turnaround of the brand’s image, to volunteer for the presidential campaign of Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont.

Mr. Nolan said he had been disillusioned by the hesitancy of major designers to get involved in, or even talk about, politics — although there was little evidence that his own activism had negatively affected his career.

“Fashion is about image,” Mr. Nolan said. “People I know are afraid to take political stands because they are afraid to turn off their customers.”

Portman, King's Speech, Modern Family Takes Top Prize at SAG Awards!

The King's Speech took top prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards, giving the Oscars front-runner added momentum after it took top honors at the Directors Guild awards Saturday night. The British royals drama won the trophy for outstanding cast, the SAG equivalent of Best Picture, reports the Los Angeles Times. The night's other big winners:

King's Speech star Colin Firth was named best actor for his role as stuttering monarch King George VI.

Natalie Portman was named best actress for her starring role as a ballerina in Black Swan.

Christian Bale and Melissa Leo took the supporting-acting honors for their roles in The Fighter.

In TV, Al Pacino won an SAG for his role as Jack Kevorkian in You Don't Know Jack, while Claire Danes was honored for her performance in Temple Grandin.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire and star Steve Buscemi took the top prizes for a TV drama.

Betty White won over Jane Lynch for Comedy Actress, but Jane didn't seem to care cause it went to a legend.

Modern Family won over Glee for Best Comedy Ensemble

CULTURE: We Need a Muslim Brady Bunch?

Katie Couric floated the idea of a Muslim Cosby Show a while back, and Firoozeh Dumas thinks the notion of "sitcom diplomacy" is a great idea. When she and her family moved here from Iran in 1972, "the first Americans I met were the Bradys and the Partridges," she writes in the Los Angeles Times. The big lesson: Underneath the superficial stuff, American and Iranian families are pretty much the same.

When she lectures around the country, Dumas often gets two reactions: "fear and surprise," she writes. "Fear of Middle Eastern immigrants, and surprise that I am nothing like the person they expected." The problem is that the mutterings of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and company have given Iranian Americans "a PR challenge worthy of Sisyphus." A sitcom can only help make one point clear: "Middle Easterners come in all shapes, sizes and belief levels, just like every other kind of American."

CULTURE: Cycling Champ Graeme Obree Comes OUT!

Champion cyclist Graeme Obree has come out of the closet, making him the highest-ranking member of that sport to do so, in an interview with the Scottish Sun.

“I was brought up thinking you'd be better dead than gay. I must have known I was gay and it was so unacceptable. I was brought up by a war generation - they grew up when gay people were put in jail. Being homosexual was so unthinkable that you just wouldn't be gay. I'd no inkling about anything, I just closed down...People say, 'How can you be gay and be married and have kids and not know it?’ But when I went to my psychologist she reckoned I had the emotional age of about 13 because I'd just closed down."

Bike Radar reports: "Both Obree's private life and his achievements on the bike have combined to make him one of cycling's most enigmatic figures. The Scotsman claimed the World individual pursuit title in 1993 and 1995 but is best known for his innovative and pioneering attempts at the World hour record. He claimed the hour record twice, in 1993 and 1994. The first successful, in Norway, saw him best a nine-year-old record held by Italian Francesco Moser using a hand-made bike constructed from spare parts dubbed 'Old Faithful'. That record lasted only a week as Englishman Chris Boardman improved on Obree's effort in Bordeaux, France during a rest day of that year's Tour de France."

POLITICS: Assange: WikiLeaks Shares Founding Fathers' Values!

Julian Assange says he doesn’t dislike the US; instead, WikiLeaks is motivated by the same values as the Founding Fathers. “Our founding values are those of the US revolution,” he told 60 Minutes last night. “They are those of people like Jefferson and Madison.” Indeed, the website doesn’t “go after a particular country” or “organizational group,” he said, holding that there’s no political agenda.

“It's not about saving the whales. It's about giving people the information they need to support whaling or not support whaling,” he told Steve Kroft. The site “operated just like any US publisher operates,” and stays “inside the rules.” If the operation were “prevented” from publishing—“if a number of people were imprisoned or assassinated”—his team would release a trove of encrypted documents; some 100,000 people have backups of the files, and just need an encryption key.

POLITICS: Clinton calls Mubarak's Fate in Hands of 'Egyptian People'!

Hillary Clinton continued to tread a careful line about the US position to Hosni Mubarak on the morning talk shows. Asked directly whether the US was distancing itself from the Egyptian leader, she answered: "We don't want to send any message about backing forward or backing away." She said his future “is going to be up to the Egyptian people,” adding that whatever happens to him specifically, the nation needs an "orderly transition" to "real democracy." She called for a dialogue with protesters, taking care to compliment the military as a "respected institution."

Some examples of how it's being parsed:

New York Times: "Her phrasing seemed to imply an eventual end to Mr. Mubarak’s 30 years in power," perhaps in the already scheduled fall elections.

Politico: She "continued the Obama administration’s careful but unmistakable move away from" Mubarak by "declining to repeat her assessment that the Egyptian government is 'stable,' and instead pressing for a move to democracy in the largest Arab country."

Los Angeles Times: She "made clear that the United States was not demanding that embattled President Hosni Mubarak step down in the face of continuing demonstrations."

FUNNY: How (Not) to Be a Gay Dad!

CULTURE: Djokovic TOPS Murray, Wins Aussie Open

(AP)Novak Djokovic won his second Australian Open title, breezing past Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 today to extend Britain's near 75-year drought in men's singles Grand Slams. Djokovic also won the 2008 Australian title. Murray has lost three Grand Slam finals, also falling to Roger Federer in the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open. The Scot hasn't won a set in a Grand Slam final. Last year, Murray cried after his loss to Federer. They weren't immediately visible this year, but the hurt may have been just as bad after he lost seven straight games through the end of the first set and into the second and never appeared to be in the match.

The last British man to win a Grand Slam singles title was Fred Perry in the 1936 US Open—more than 270 majors ago. Murray and Djokovic, each 23 and born a week apart, are good friends and often practice together. At the coin flip before the match, Djokovic smiled broadly for photos while Murray looked fidgety and nervous. After the match, the two hugged, then Djokovic threw his racket, his shirt and then his shoes into the crowd.

CULTURE: Jonathan Knight Comes OUT!

Jonathan Knight took to the NKOTB blog to address his recent so-called "outing" by pop star Tiffany and officially announce to the public that he is gay.

"I have never been outed by anyone but myself! I did so almost twenty years ago. I never know that I would have to do it all over again publicly just because I reunited with NKOTB! I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay! Apparently the pre requiste to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption "I am gay". I apologize for not doing so if this is what was expected! My belief is that you live your life by example, and not by a caption on a magazine! If there ever has been any confusion about my sexuality, then you are someone that doesn't even know me!"

"I love living my life being open and honest, but at this time I choose not to discuss my private life any further! My fellow band members don't discuss their private lives with their loved ones and I don't feel that just because I am gay, I should have to discuss mine!"

CULTURE: Battle of the 'Bergs' on SNL!

The real Mark Zuckerberg stepped forward on last night's Saturday Night Live, alongside the guy who played him in The Social Network and the guy who plays him on SNL. "Awkward!" cried Andy Samberg, skipping off when Zuckerberg came out. Left alone, Jesse Eisenberg asks Zuck what he thought of the, uh, movie? "Interesting," Zuckerberg allows. Catch some of the show's highlights in the gallery.

"For a guy who's not an actor, Mark did an OK job of saying his lines," writes the San Francisco Chronicle. "Look, he was stilted, OK. A bit robotic, to say the least. But give him credit—major props—for coming on the show and making it a memorable classic."

ISSUES: Lesbian Couple Threatened to Stay Away from the Royal Court!

Champlin Park High School (CPHS) and the Anoka-Hennepin School District in Minnesota are being sued by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Faegre & Benson law firm because of their refusal to allow a lesbian couple - Desiree (Daz) Shelton and Sarah Lindstrom - to be on the "royal court" at the school's Snow Days dance.

“We are disappointed that the school and school district will not simply grant these two students the same rights as every other student, as they are due under both state and federal law,” said Sam Wolfe, lead attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center. “It is an absolute shame that the school and school district have tarnished what should be a joyous celebration through these discriminatory actions.”

CULTURE: What if Star Trek had Gay Characters?

Could TNG's Wesley or DSN's Dr. Bashir been Gay? They certainly would be by Picks!

Producer/writer Barannon Braga opens up to After Elton on why there were never any gay characters on any of the Star Trek shows and films he has worked on. Obviously, he's not speaking about the original show here, but about the The Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise as well as two of the films in the 1990's, Generations and First Contact.

"It was a shame for a lot of us that ... I’m talking about The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and there was a constant back and forth about well how do we portray the spectrum of sexuality. There were people who felt very strongly that we should be showing casually, you know, just two guys together in the background in Ten Forward. At the time the decision was made not to do that and I think those same people would make a different decision now because I think, you know, that was 1989, well yeah about 89, 90, 91. I have no doubt that those same creative players wouldn’t feel so hesitant to have, you know, have been squeamish about a decision like that."

ENTERTAINMENT: Charlie Sheen Enters Rehab!

Must have been a really uncontrollable case of the giggles, but just after "laughing too hard" landed Charlie Sheen in the hospital with a hernia, the Two and a Half Men star has now landed in rehab, reports People. Sheen "has voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center today," says a statement from his rep. His sitcom will go on hiatus. And in a sign of how desperate Sheen's situation had become, even Lindsay Lohan's worried.

CULTURE: “Kaboom” star Thomas Dekker Goes full-frontal!

Thomas Dekker stars in director Gregg Araki latest film Kaboom and chatted about some provocative topics with Next Magazine at the film’s New York premiere.

Dekker starred on Fox’s The Sarah Connor Chronicles and had also been on NBC’s Heroes.

He left Heroes and a role that was supposed to be gay. This gave the young actor and his reps a bad rap because it seemed to some that his departure from the show was a matter of him simply not wanting to play a gay role.

That certainly is not the case since his pansexual character in Kaboom sleeps with both men and women.

“I felt it was such an honor to play a role that was neither gay nor straight,” Dekker confided. “I hadn’t come across a feature script like that before.”

“The movie opens with a full-frontal shot of me,” he said nonchalantly. “Honestly I don’t care about nudity or sex. I find it a lot harder to do those emotional scenes than ones merely involving vanity. If I could do every photo shoot and every scene naked, I would. It would be easier. People have less to judge when you’re naked.”

Dekker’s next role is a gay one: He plays Lance Loud, who broke ground as the openly gay son in in the 1973 reality series An American Family, in a new feature for HBO called Cinema Verite.

CULTURE: Museums Bet Paintings on Super Bowl!

Two museums are making Super Bowl XLV a little more interesting. Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Museum are betting two comparable French impressionist paintings on the big game. If the Steelers prevail, Milwaukee will give up Gustave Caillebotte's Boating on the Yerres, whereas if the Packers win, the Carnegie will send off Renoir's Bathers with a Crab. The stakes aren't that high, though: The loser gets its pricey painting back in 3 months, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“I'm confident we will be enjoying the Renoir from the Carnegie Museum of Art very soon,” the director of the Milwaukee said. “I look forward to displaying it where the public can enjoy it and be reminded of the superiority of the Green Bay Packers.” The Carnegie's head honcho responded, “In Pittsburgh, we believe trash talk is bad form. We let the excellence of our football team, and our collection, speak for itself."

RELATIONSHIPS: If She Cheats, He'd Prefer It Be a Woman!

Men are more likely to stay with girlfriends who have cheated on them with other women than those who’ve cheated with another man, a University of Texas study suggests. Women, however, are the opposite: they’re more likely to stay with a man who’s cheated with a woman than one who’s cheated with a man, says the study published in Personality and Individual Differences.

A father-daughter research team asked 700 students to imagine partners of three months cheating on them. Men showed a 50% likelihood of staying with women who’d cheated with other women and a 22% likelihood of sticking with girlfriends who’d been with men. Women showed 28% odds of continuing to date men who’d cheated with women and 21% odds of staying with boyfriends who’d cheated with other men.

POLITICS: What Hillary Wants More Than the Presidency!

No pressure, Chelsea, but Hillary Clinton wants to be a grandma more than she ever wanted to be leader of the free world. Or so says Bill Clinton in a lighter moment of an interview at Davos, reports Reuters. When asked what he'd like to achieve in the next 10 years, Clinton responded, “I’d like to live, I’d like to be a grandfather."

"I have nothing to do with that achievement, but I would like it,” laughs Clinton. “I would like to have a happy wife and she won’t be unless she’s a grandmother. It’s something she wants more than she wanted to be president.”

ISSUES: Shreveport Man Brutalized in Anti-Gay Attack with Pool Cue!

A Shreveport, Louisiana man is in the hospital following a brutal attack at a nightclub that witnesses say was related to his sexual orientation, KSLA reports:

Police say 52 year old, John Skaggs was hospitalized after he was attacked at the Sandbar nightclub in downtown Shreveport.

"He's going to have some pretty serious reconstructive surgery, broken jaw, and broken bone that holds his eye socket," said the manager and owner of the Sandbar, Tim Huck.

Security personnel at the Sandbar held the alleged attacker, William Payne until police arrived.

Payne was arrested and charged with attempted 2nd degree murder and the commission of a hate crime.

"It was totally 100 percent a hate crime for this sexual orientation," said Huck.

The bar provided police with video surveillance. Huck says it's disturbing, and shows Payne who is a large man, breaking the cue stick over Skaggs' face with one powerful blow.

Huck says the attack was unprovoked: "At no point in time had he talked to the man that attacked him, bumped him. After watching the video and from witnesses they hadn't even made any form of eye contact or anything."

CULTURE: Contador Likely to Lose Tour de France Title!

Alberto Contador is expected to lose his title as the winner of the 2010 Tour de France and be banned from cycling for a full year, the Telegraph reports. The decision is not yet official, but the Spanish Cycling Federation has recommended the punishment, meaning that Contador has 10 days to appeal. It comes after Contador failed a drug test in which trace amounts of clenbuterol were found in his urine.

Contador has insisted he's innocent, saying the small amount found was the result of eating a steak. Clenbuterol is used to fatten up cattle in some countries, though it's banned in Europe, explains the Christian Science Monitor. Contador plans a press conference tomorrow to declare his next move.

The WAR Continues: Kings of Leon vs. Glee: Spat Turns Homophobic!

At least one Kings of Leon member was not happy about being told to eff off by Glee creator Ryan Murphy. Drummer Nathan Followill responded with a Twitter rant some, including the Huffington Post, are calling homophobic. “Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7yr olds how to say f***,” he wrote in a tweet that has since been removed. Murphy is openly gay, the Post notes.

Followill later backtracked, tweeting, "I'm sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I'm so not that kind of person. I really do apologize."

ENTERTAINMENT: Geri Jewell from “The Facts of Life" comes OUT as a 'DRUNK' Lesbian!

As a Gay man, who has battled the effects of a Mild-form of Celebral Palsy, I could always relate  to Geri Jewell. who played Blair’s cousin Geri who popped in from time to time and was the first recurring character on network television, that I can recall anyway, with cerebral palsy. Even though mine was mild compared to Geri's was severe. I knew if Geri could succeed so could I.

Geri Jewell, was always open and humorous about her condition (I'm Drunk!) and no doubt helped remove any stigma. Now we are learning, through a new book by Geri, that she is a lesbian! ( I came out way before Geri).

The Jezebel site reports that the book, I’m Walking as Straight as I Can, refers to both Jeri’s cerebral palsy and the fear of revealing her “true sexual identity.” The book’s subtitle is: Transcending Disability in Hollywood and Beyond.

Here is how the book is described on Amazon.com: this autobiography offers a true glimpse beyond the one-dimensional, hero image often associated with actress Geri Jewell. Born with cerebral palsy, Jewell made history when she became the first person with a disability cast in a recurring role on American television in The Facts of Life, and in the years that followed she experienced a string of other successes, including a performance at the White House in 1985 and a role on HBO’s Deadwood series. Along with Jewell’s accomplishments, this personal story also depicts some of the less-than-rosy events that happened behind closed doors during her initial climb to fame—among them, her release from The Facts of Life, her manager’s embezzlement of the money she made on the show, and her struggle with chronic pain, despair, and a fear of revealing her true sexual identity. Told with grace and humor, this inspirational narrative presents an honest portrayal of a woman who refused to give up when others kept knocking her down.

CULTURE: NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of Challenger Disaster!

NASA officials will gather at Kennedy Space Center today to mark the 25th anniversary of one of the worst disasters in the history of space travel. The space shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after take-off on Jan. 28, 1986, killing all seven astronauts aboard. The widow of Challenger commander Dick Scobee will be the featured speaker at today's ceremony, AP reports.

NASA chief Charlie Bolden paid tribute to all 17 of the agency's fallen astronauts at a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery yesterday, reports the Orlando Sentinel. "They've all left their legacy of exploration for us to follow. They all lived and breathed NASA," said Bolden, a former astronaut. "They would tell you, if they came here today, to reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so the things we learn and the things we do benefit all humankind."

FASHION: The New Hot Body Part? Knees!

Just when you finally stopped feeling insecure about your not-as-sexy-as-Michelle-Obama arms, along comes Kate Middleton to make you feel bad about your … knees?! Yep, at least according to a Telegraph piece from last week, the Boston Globe reports. Middleton is constantly flaunting her excellent knees, and at least one personal trainer reports that he hears from lots of people who worry their knees are too fat.

But fear not! You have options, which the Globe conveniently rounds up for you: “If you shape the muscles around the knees that helps shape the knees,” he says. But what if your knees are just plain saggy? There’s not much to do other than what Demi Moore reportedly did, according to a 2006 Daily Mail story: Get a knee lift. If all else fails, at least remember to exfoliate and, if possible, conceal: MAC Cosmetics makes a foundation which, the Globe claims, can be applied to the knees.

POLITICS: Biden 'HOTTIE' to Replace Robert Gibbs!

The new White House press secretary will be Jay Carney, reports Politico. Carney, 45, currently serves as Joe Biden's communications director and previously worked for years as a journalist for Time magazine, including a stint as Washington bureau chief. Carney, who is married to ABC correspondent Claire Shipman, had apparently been on the short list to replace the outgoing Robert Gibbs from the start. Unlike Gibbs, he is not part of Obama's close inner circle and did not participate in the 2008 campaign, notes Politico. AP has bio details here.
