Remembering back to New Year's Eve 1980, and watching Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, My strongest memory was the 'Celebration' of the new decade with the song, "Celebration" by the group, Kool and the Gang. 33 years later I am seeing this group and hearing this song!
Kool and the Gang played this past Friday at the Snoqualmie Casino near Seattle. The audience made up of mostly women and an over 40 crowd, stayed in their seats mostly during such hit Ballads as Cherish, Joanna, Fresh, and Misled, as well as their older funkier, Jungle Boogie and Hollywood Swinging.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: SMC returns to its Campy Best for 'Baby, its Cold outside'!
courtesy of SMC |
It is that time of year again when the Seattle Men's Chorus brings out the Yuletide and Gay apparel for it annual Holiday Concert.
As a former SMCer, it is hard not to be objective, but I try to separate what happens onstage as completely different to any of the Backstage drama. (No Comment)
First of all, I have been seeing the Holiday concerts for the most part in 14 years. Some have been too serious, traditional, Political, Uneven, Campy. The last 2 years have been uneven with too much (Big Bang Theory skit in 2011) or Not enough (Glee skit in 2010). This year was a nice mix of Camp and Fun, the theme of heading to the tropics was captured throughout the show.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: Ageless Joan Jett, Rocks Seattle!
SCOTT/2012 |
It is great to go back to the past and experience a moment you never had the chance to in your youth. Back in 1982, I was barely in Grade school but remembered that the #3 song of that year was a leather clad chick singing 'I love Rock n Roll'. She reminded me of 'Leather Tuscadero' (Suzi Quatro) from 'Happy Days'. Joan Jett was real and a true pioneer.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view: a Gay ol' Time at the Scissor Sisters' Only NW appearance!
by MK Scott
Music and love were the sole focus of Scissor Sisters’ exuberant return to stage in Seattle this past Tuesday. No political statements, just a reflection and regret that “we’ve been away for so long.” Jake ‘n crew promised never to let it happen again. Since this was the Only NW appearance, they promised the Portland based attendees they will appear in Portland next time.
A mighty throng of glittered gays (sold-out) were on hand at The Paramount Theater (the Ballroom/Dance style appearance) to see Bare-chested Jake Shears (Seattle Royalty), as well as vocalist Ana Matronic (Portland Royalty), Babydaddy, Del Marquis (yummy, gay lead guitarist), and drummer Randy Real jam away. The band, whose music fits the genres of glam rock, pop, disco, alternative and electro clash, pulled heavily from their new album, Magic Hour.

(OUTscene NW) RE-view; Berlin and Scandal Still 'Take my Breath away'!
Photo/Stamper |
Back in 1982, My sister purchased a new 45"-single from a Band I never heard, 'Berlin' called 'Sex, I'm a ...' and the music was so up-beat and sexy, the lyrics were Dirty, this was risque since the Hippest music, my parents let us listen to was Disco!
As someone who was entering puberty and discovering who I was, the fact that Berlin's Lead singer, Terri Nunn comes out and sings, 'I'm Bi!' was a huge draw. It came Full circle during the Homo-erotic 'Top Gun' with the Berlin's Chart-Topping. 'Take my breath away' during the love scene with (Not OUT) Tom Cruise and (Now OUT) Kelly McGillis!
Following the whole Pat Benatar era of the early 80's, came the Fierce-nest of Patty Smyth and Scandal's 'I'm a warrior'. Last summer before a Seattle Summer Outdoor screening of 'The Apple' they played the Scandal 'Warrior' video.
Fast-forward 25 years, and Both show up in Seattle's Snoqualmie Casino this past Sunday for a show that Rocked the ages.
