(OUTscene NW) RE-view: SMC returns to its Campy Best for 'Baby, its Cold outside'!

It is that time of year again when the Seattle Men's Chorus brings out the Yuletide and Gay apparel for it annual Holiday Concert.

As a former SMCer, it is hard not to be objective, but I try to separate what happens onstage as completely different to any of the Backstage drama. (No Comment)

First of all, I have been seeing the Holiday concerts for the most part in 14 years. Some have been too serious, traditional, Political, Uneven, Campy. The last 2 years have been uneven with too much (Big Bang Theory skit in 2011) or Not enough (Glee skit in 2010). This year was a nice mix of Camp and Fun, the theme of heading to the tropics was captured throughout the show.

It was great to hear a song I once performed, 'Gloria' by Bass with Douglas Cleveland at the Watjen Family Pipe Organ. 'Forgotten Carols' from other lands and 'Social Network Christmas' in Act 1, was back to what SMC does well and is a ray of unforgettable characters.

I attended the night that Broadway and SNL alum, Ana Gasteyer was the guest artist (opening weekend only) and she was Fab.

In Act 2, after their traditional, Silent Night, the chorus stripped down to Tacky shirts and shorts and took us on a 'Tropical Holiday', that brought out a mix of Drag (The Hilarious Michael Bahnmiller as Carmen Miranda) and Beefcake (The eternally Ripped, Aaron Mahany).

However, I don't know any gay man that would be caught wearing a Tacky shirt and shorts to the tropics.

Gasteyer returned to Belt out more songs, and has a sensational voice.

The sing along (which is usually 2 or 3 songs) was One complicated, 12 Days of Xmas (Hawaiian Style).

Arnaldo!, Drag Chanteuse came out and performed the heart warming, 'Baby, It's cold Outside'.

The show-stopping finale didn't disappoint either.

Despite the concert being 3 hours long, Thanks to the Gasteyer portion, the show was one the best Holiday concerts they have had in years.

Seattle Men's Chorus' 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' continues Through Dec 22nd at Benaroya Hall. Get Tickets Here.
