(OUTscene America) Film Director Sabine Bernardi on “Romeos” a feature film about love, a transgendered man, and identity for all!

By Ethan L. McMahon
OUTscene Special

Female-to-Male transgendered people have not been a widely discussed topic, historically focus has been on the Male-to-Female, but recently there has been a shift in attention. A good part of that shift has been due to the public announcement of Chaz Bono transitioning from daughter of the superstar Cher, to son, causing no small amount of debate inside and outside the LGBT community.

Into this somewhat heated debate comes “Romeos”, a fun and powerful little film from Germany, with a straight forward and honest perspective on what is a very internal struggle for most. Centered on the lives of young adults in Cologne, this film is young and hip, vibrant and occasionally reckless, and funny while at the same time very serious.

I had an opportunity to sit down for a chat with the Writer and Director, Sabine Bernardi, the day after its US debut. Bernardi is a self-avowed lesbian, petite and good-looking, with alert hazel eyes, a firm handshake, and a charming German accent. My first impression is that she is a person who knows what she is about, and loves what she does.

(OUTscene America; RE-view) Juno Temple dazzles in uneven Dirty Girl!

by Sara Michelle Fetters
Moviefreak.com

At Norman High School, deep in the heart of Oklahoma, Danielle (Juno Temple) is the requisite 'dirty girl.' She knows what she wants and she thinks she knows how to get it, and while her fellow students call her a slut, the teachers look at her as an annoyance, and her mother Sue-Ann (Milla Jovovich) is beside herself trying to keep the girl in check, this 16-year-old knows she's destined for better things than this.

by MK Scott
OUTscene Special

Back in August, I met up with Actor/Director, Casper Andreas in New York for dinner and a Broadway show and had a Fabulous time. Just over 45 days later, I am welcoming Casper back to Seattle for the first time since June 2010.

I chatted with Casper about his latest film, 'Going Down in La La Land', his first film set in LA (Not NY) and how his character takes a dark turn as Porn director turned Meth addict. The role is riveting and the director has assembled a cast of cameos with OUTscene favorites, Bruce Vilanch, Alec Mapa and Jesse Archer.

(OUTscene America) MK welcomes the Legendary Melissa Manchester for the 'Dirty Girl' Premiere at SLGFF!

by MK Scott
OUTscene Special

Back in 2004, The legendary Melissa Manchester performed for Audience of the Seattle Men's Chorus' Holiday Concert. I sat in the front row and met her after the show and hoped for the chance to interview her in the future. Well, the time was now as I heard that Manchester would be making a return to Seattle as a special guest featured in the upcoming film, 'Dirty Girl'. It represents the essence of the legend herself and even makes a cameo in the film.  I had the chance to ask about the film and her emotional feelings about working with such gay icons as Peter Allen.

In the meantime, enjoy the photos by SGN Photographer, Nate Gowdy.

(OUTscene NW) SLGFF RE-view; ‘We Were Here’!

It’s hard to figure out where to start when meditating on the importance of We Were Here, a documentary by David Weissman.

Weismann’s film illuminates the social, personal, political and cultural issues of the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco. The film itself has a small scope and because of that scope- it is able to highlight the broader issues of this epidemic. Its characters: Ed Wolf- an AIDS activist and caregiver; Paul Boneberg- executive director of the GLBT Historical Society; Daniel Goldstein- a visual artist and founding President of Under One Roof; Guy Clark- a local queer florist based out of SF’s Castro District; and Eileen Glutzer- a nurse in the height of the crisis and feminist health care activist. Weismann’s focus on these characters and their personal experience allow the film a lot of depth that captures the profound personal stories that highlight a larger collective experience.
