On the occasion of the release of A Tale of Love and Darkness — directed and adapted by Natalie Portman from Amos Oz's autobiographical novel — the Oscar winning actress discussed the new film, and her career, with Moderator Annette Insdorf.
Portman also stars in A Tale of Love and Darkness, a Hebrew-language drama about a Polish Holocaust survivor — seen through the eyes of her young son — who is trying to adjust in late 1940s Israel. For her feature directing debut, she chose cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, who photographed Kieslowski's Double Life of Veronique as well as Three Colors: Blue. Portman's previous work as a director includes the short Eve — starring Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara — and a segment of New York, I Love You.

(Blank on Blank) Nora Ephron on Crazy Salad!
"It’s okay being a woman now. I like it. Try it some time.” - Nora Ephron, in a 1975 interview with Studs Terkel
To many, Nora Ephron is best known as the screenwriter behind some classic movies like When Harry Met Sally, Julie and Julia, Sleepless in Seattle, and Silkwood. But before she turned to writing screenplays, she was a journalist and a writer. Ephron got her start at the New York Post in the 1960s and soon she was writing for New York Magazine and Esquire.
It was at Esquire that Ephron made her name through with her personal essays, such as the one about the smallness of her breasts (A Few Words About Breasts). Ephron mixed humor with honesty, and captured the ups and downs of both being a woman--and the growing women's movement. It was around this time she sat down with Studs Terkel. Ephron had recently released a collection of her essays called, Crazy Salad.
Listen to the full interview, more about her place in the women's movement, her thoughts on writing and movies, and an inspiring message for graduates (“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”)

(MATT BAUME) Mike Pence: Even Worse than Trump?
Mike Pence may look comparatively stable next to Trump. But he's actually way more extreme when it comes to LGBT issues -- here's just a sampling of some his worst hits. This is the guy who could be second in line to run the country, and that's a huge problem since Trump's one of the most impeachment-ready candidates we've ever had.

(Blank on Blank) Frank Zappa on Fads!
"I don‘t think that there‘s a girl around that would fit in with what we do" - Frank Zappa on June 6, 1971, as told to Howard Smith.
Frank Zappa had a few opinions. Surly? Matter-of-fact? Misunderstood? We'll let you decide as we present this rarely heard
interview with Zappa recorded in his hotel room.
Zappa has a few things to say about women's lib ("a fad"), on LA vs "depressing" New York, why America is a nation of people being told what to do, and why women couldn't hack it in his band. Sit back and enjoy.
So much good stuff in the full interview, which you can hear at http://thesmithtapes.com.

(Matt Baume) Why Do We Have Pride?
Given what happened in Florida, it's an important time to ask: why do we have Pride? Well, just as there was 40 years ago when Pride began, there's violence today that pushes people into the closet to protect themselves; there are still laws that erase us; and there are still people who would chase us into our safe places and try to do us harm. But people have tried to terrorize us in our refuges before. We defied them then, and we'll defy them now.

(Blank on Blank) Lou Reed on Guns & Ammo!
"I write a song called 'Heroin', you would have thought that I murdered the Pope or something"
- Lou Reed on March 20, 1987, as told to Joe Smith
Lou Reed. Lou Reed. Here we bring you a rarely heard interview Lou recored in 1987. It's vintage Lou. Salty and sweet. Earnest and cocky. Grouchy and kind of endearing. Reed (and his legendary band The Velvet Underground) were those musicians who never got the extensive accolades or awards--nor the riches many of their contemporaries found. Yet he never seemed to waver in his search for the perfect sound and his quest "to elevate the rock and roll song and take it where it hadn’t been taken before." Here we present some interview outtakes that give a taste for this iconic American musician. Lou Reed died of liver disease on October 27, 2013. He was 71.

Come one, come all to “The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth.”
Since the current presidential race has come to resemble a reality television show, why shouldn’t there be one based on it? Providing a behind-the-scenes look at the candidates on the campaign trail, Showtime’s “The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth” pulls back the curtain on the 2016 presidential race, revealing the stories behind the headlines. Key characters and events from the individual campaigns are presented in real time, as they are happening. Produced in cooperation with Bloomberg Politics, “The Circus” is a non-partisan never-before attempted take on what has shaped up to be one of the most fascinating and consequential elections in modern history.

(Blank on Blank) B.B. King on The Blues!
"I don't like to feel that I owe anything. I like to feel that I pay my own way, no free lunch."
- B.B. King on September 5, 1986, as told to Joe Smith
Mr. B.B. King. The blues legend says he played 300 nights a year for four-plus decades. That’s just ridiculous. We’re talking about nearly 15,000 shows. King turns 90 this year and you still just might be able to see him on stage. So what's his secret? We heard some keys to living life to its fullest in a 1986 interview that had been unheard until now.
In this animated film created from B.B. King's interview with legendary music executive, Joe Smith, the musician explains how he approaches an audience, how a fire at a juke joint led to his naming his guitar "Lucille", why the blues isn't just being down on your luck, and why compliments don't mean it's time to stop practicing or perfecting your craft.

(Time WARP) the GATE turns 79 and Remembering Robin Gibb!
Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. As part of both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, the structure links the city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County. It is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the modern Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world. The project was finished by April 1937, $1.3 million under budget.
The bridge was visualized in such film classics as Vertigo, Star Trek IV and View to a Kill.
The bridge-opening celebration began on May 27, 1937 and lasted for one week. The day before vehicle traffic was allowed, 200,000 people crossed by foot and roller skate. On opening day, Mayor Angelo Rossi and other officials rode the ferry to Marin, then crossed the bridge in a motorcade past three ceremonial "barriers", the last a blockade of beauty queens who required Joseph Strauss to present the bridge to the Highway District before allowing him to pass. An official song, "There's a Silver Moon on the Golden Gate", was chosen to commemorate the event. Strauss wrote a poem that is now on the Golden Gate Bridge entitled "The Mighty Task is Done." The next day, President Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington, D.C. signaling the official start of vehicle traffic over the Bridge at noon. When the celebration got out of hand, the SFPD had a small riot in the uptown Polk Gulch area. Weeks of civil and cultural activities called "the Fiesta" followed. A statue of Strauss was moved in 1955 to a site near the bridge.

(92nd Street Y) Steve Case with Andrew Ross Sorkin!
One of America’s most accomplished entrepreneurs — a pioneer who made the Internet part of everyday life and orchestrated the largest merger in the history of business — shares a roadmap for how anyone can succeed in a world of rapidly changing technology.
Steve Case’s career began when he cofounded America Online (AOL) in 1985. At the time, only three percent of Americans were online. It took a decade for AOL to achieve mainstream success, and there were many near-death experiences and back-to-the-wall pivots. AOL became the top performing company of the 1990s, and at its peak more than half of all consumer Internet traffic in the United States ran through the service. After Case engineered AOL’s merger with Time Warner and he became Chairman of the combined business, Case oversaw the biggest media and communications empire in the world.
