It is Day 7 of the 20th Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (SLGFF):
Naz & Maalik (directed by Jay Dockendorf)
7:00 pm @ SIFF Cinema Egyptian
Naz and Maalik are gay Muslims in Brooklyn—but nobody knows they’re together, especially their devout families. The teenagers are happy traipsing around the city selling lottery cards to earn extra money until they find themselves being followed by the FBI for a simple misunderstanding. Their lives now disrupted, Naz and Maalik have to face who they are and what they want with each other and out of life. Their charismatic portrayal of young men in love won newcomers Curtis Cook Jr. and Kerwin Johnson Jr. the Best Actor Award at Outfest 2015.
From This Day Forward (directed by Sharon Shattuck)
7:00 pm @ Northwest Film Forum
Filmmaker Sharon Shattuck was 13 when she learned her dad had dreams of wearing a dress at her wedding. FROM THIS DAY FORWARD is a real-life Transparent, a loving look at how a father’s gender transition unfolds in a closely bonded family. When Michael becomes Trisha in a small northern Michigan town, Trisha’s wife reimagines their partnership, and Sharon and her sister grow up trying to find their own place in the world. While the family balances self-expression and adaptation, their connection is never compromised in this moving portrayal of a family in flux.
The Surface (directed by Michael Saul)
9:15 pm @ SIFF Cinema Egyptian
Evan’s life has been full of unexpected twists and turns, from growing up as a foster child to balancing film school and cohabitating with his wealthy boyfriend. When an older man and his grown son Peter offer Evan a collection of their 8mm home movies from the ’70s, Evan becomes absorbed in a family life radically different from his own. In particular, he is drawn to the candid, pure relationship between young Peter and another boy depicted in the films. His increasingly romantic connection with Peter soon spells trouble for Evan’s relationship, but it might help him find his voice as a filmmaker.
Plays with: ELDER Genéa Gaudet; 2015; US; 15min. A man recalls his star-crossed love for an Italian communist on a 1974 Mormon mission to Italy in this touching tale of self-awakening.
Sylvia O'Stayformore's Night With Jacqueline (directed by Sylvia O’Stayformore, Michael Anderson and Shane Wahlund)
9:15 pm @ Northwest Film Forum
Sylvia O’Stayformore has joined her effervescent drag performance with the brilliance of Collide-O-Scope Video. Her first sold-out project, “Come Fly with Me,” was a huge success in Seattle earlier this year. Now Sylvia does it again with a full evening of Jackie Susann’s films—VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, LOVE MACHINE, and ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH—all mashed into one debaucherous event! Sylvia will be your love therapist as she guides you through these high-camp movies brimming with pill popping, booze drinking, and drag song-and-dance fun. Come in your best Pucci attire and sign up for prizes!

“The festival--which first launched with a sold-out presentation of short films and a flyer that said ‘Queer as a Three Dollar Bill Cinema’--aspired to bring the worldwide boom in queer filmmaking to Seattle’s LGBT community, and help the community see itself on screen,” says Three Dollar Bill Cinema Executive Director Jason Plourde. “Our mission today is the same: to showcase extraordinary and award-winning work relevant to the LGBT community, and to encourage members of this community from around the world to express their creativity and tell their stories through film and video.”
The 2015 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival is produced by Three Dollar Bill Cinema.
