(GLAAD 2014) And the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominees are...!

Today GLAAD announced the nominees for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, recognizing powerful and important media stories from 2013 - an historic year for LGBT equality. The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.  The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBT community and issues that build support for equality.

Nominated in the Outstanding Film - Wide Release category are the Oscar-nominated Philomena, Blue Is the Warmest Color, Dallas Buyers Club, Kill Your Darlings, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (with the relationship between gay characters Alec and Magnus which will continue in the sequel).

Outstanding Film - Limited Release nominees include Concussion, Geography Club, Out in the Dark, Reaching for the Moon, and Yossi, a sequel to the GLAAD Media Award-winning film Yossi & Jagger (2003).

The Outstanding Comedy Series category includes Glee, Modern Family, and first-time nominees Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Orange is the New Black, and Please Like Me.

The nominees for Outstanding Drama Series, Pretty Little Liars, Shameless, Grey's Anatomy, The Fosters, and Orphan Black, represent a diverse range of characters and storylines.

In the Outstanding Music Artist category, Lady Gaga is nominated alongside Elton John, Tegan and Sara, Vampire Weekend, and Goldfrapp. Goldfrapp released a powerful music video for "Annabel" about a child escaping to the woods to explore their gender, while Tegan and Sara's critically acclaimed Heartthrob was the duo's best-selling album to date.

The Outstanding Documentary category includes two films about the repression of LGBT people in Uganda: Call Me Kuchu and God Loves Uganda, which was recently short-listed for an Oscar nomination. Other nominees include Bridegroom, The New Black, and Valentine Road.

Among the journalism nominees, The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell is nominated for Outstanding TV Journalism Segment for the "Scouts Dishonor," interview with Zach Wahls, founder of Scouts for Equality and Daniel Hernandez. Al Jazeera's The Stream received a nod for a segment on India's hijra community a portrait of GLAD attorney Mary Bonauto by Buzzfeed's Chris Geidner was nominated for Outstanding Digital Journalism Article, while a series in the Juneau Empire about Juneau, Alaska's LGBT community received a nomination for Outstanding Newspaper Article. Other journalism nominees include MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry, PBS' To the Contrary, The New York Times, Black Enterprise and HuffPost Live.
Project Runway, Days of Our Lives, Drop Dead Diva, Anderson Cooper 360, ESPN The Magazine, Black Enterprise, Batwoman, and Young Avengers also received nominations.

Spanish-language nominees include the Univision novela Amores Verdaderos, which included the wedding of a gay couple, Al Punto for its coverage of the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, and Sábado Gigante for its interview with Karina Hermosillo, the first openly gay beauty pageant contestant on Nuestra Belleza Latina.

The GLAAD Media Awards will be held on Saturday, April 12 and The Beverly Hilton and in New York City on May 3 at the Waldorf Astoria New York . The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented nationally by Ketel One Vodka, Wells Fargo, and Hilton Worldwide.
