(JESSE on the BRINK) A Country For Old Men!

by Jesse Archer

This had to be the most cultural weekend I've experienced in Sydney - and by culture I mean seeing things that you don't quite understand even though you're supposed to understand so instead you just applaud. And yes, that does include waking up this morning with grass stains and an empty pizza box. More on that later, but first - how about all these old dictators racing around in motorized wheelchairs?

Ric took me around Paddington art galleries where we caught these incredible figures at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. These old dudes are meant to "call to mind" various dictators and make you ponder the temporary nature of both life and power.
They also called to mind CREEPY, especially when you're getting chased around the room by a laid out flat Yasser Arafat. There are sensors on the wheelchairs so they don't make actual contact. But still!
This was one of the best things I've ever seen in a gallery. The figures are from the collection of Swiss diplomat and collector, Uli Sigg.  Oh look, it's the dictator Walt Whitman!

On Saturday, Richard and I attended the opening night of Pirates of Penzance from Sydney Theatre Company.
It's always very cool to see a huge cast on stage, and they did it all-male. Yes more culture that made no sense. I had no idea what was going on plot-wise... if pressed I would tell you someone fell in love with someone... but it was downright hysterical in places and let's hear it for Gilbert and Sullivan. What other creatives from 1879 are getting play in 2012? Don't you dare say Madonna!
Sunday was the big 40th bash for my dear friend Matthew Dabner. Happy Birthday, Dabner! I first met this Tasmanian angel at USC, and it's been an honor to watch him grow and succeed as a writer and film producer ever since. It was a grand time at Bondi Social Club with him and his friends and family that I somehow ended up in the ocean. Yup. As for the grass stains, I don't even know where to begin!
