Some
foods have an underserved reputation as being healthy snacks, writes
Katherine Tallmadge at the
Washington Post. She runs down five common ones, including:
- Energy bars:
These are actually "calorie bombs," she writes. Sugar is usually the
first or second ingredient. Going for a hike? Try nuts and dried fruit
instead.
- Reduced-fat peanut butter: The oil is the healthiest part, so it actually makes the peanut butter less healthy to remove it. Use the regular stuff.
- "Enhanced" water: Vitaminwater and similar brands sound like they'll do you wonders; their products, however, are pretty much just sugar water.
