You'll find them under the hip new names like "shapewear" and "compression shirts" but make no mistake—men's girdles are a fashion force. Though bearing little resemblance to their old-fashioned female counterparts, shirts such as Spanx for Men and garments by Equmen—"Equality for Men"—accomplish the same task, using spandex-infused cotton to slim and firm the gut area, the Washington Post reports.

"They've done incredibly well for us," a Neiman Marcus public relations manager says of various brands of shapewear. "This is a very nice tool that men now have. It gives you confidence."
