Mommie Issues? (Garland) |
Last year at this time, Fantastic Z (a Seattle LGBTQ theater company) brought us a Trans/Western called Sidewinders (Yes, Really) that I gave a mixed review. What a difference a year makes, their latest, Psycho Beach Party by the genus, Charles Busch, is a Campy HIT. Considering the source of the material, it was going to be a hit, but in this production it is the actors that make the show shine.
As a fan of the film, this was my first viewing of the original play. The play is more about Chicklet and her multiple personalities than the film's major plot of a serial killer on the loose.
SYPNOSIS: It is a parody of the 1950 psycho-dramas like Hitchcock’s Psycho and Marnie, the Surfer movies of the early 1960’s which had a profound effect on the youth culture of the pre-hippie era, and the 1980’s slasher movies.
Actually it is really about the iconic, Sally Field, when you take her role as Gidget and her role(s) from her Emmy Winning, Sybil, a film about a girl with many personalities. Of course lots of CAMP in a Mommie Dearest kind of way.
Chicklet is played by Helen Roundhill and literally steals the show going from accent to accent and personality to personality like a pro.
The Love story of Provoloney (Trey McGee) and his surfer bud, Yo-Yo (Will Lippman) is sweet and has rooting value.

Both Chittenden and McGee have Killer Abs (Garland) |
The camp came from the drag performances of Michael Ryan Blackwood (As Bettina) and the Scary Mom, played with gusto by Anthony Pollozzi.
The venue at the Eclectic Theater isn't as spacious as last year's Hugo House and the heat was syphoning, but then again, this weekend should be much more comfortable. Get TIX before it sells out.
Psycho Beach Party. Fantastic Z Production @ Eclectic Theater, continues this weekend and must close on June 11th. Click HERE for Tix.
