(SLGFF 2015) WEDNESDAY at the Fest!

It is Day 6 of the 20th Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (SLGFF):

What We Have (directed by Maxime Desmons)
7:00 pm @ Northwest Film Forum

Theatre and life become intertwined in writer-director-actor Maxime Desmon’s compelling film about Maurice, a Frenchman haunted by his past who seeks out the quietude of a small town. Things start off well as he lands a job tutoring 15-year-old Allan, as well as the lead role in a local production of a Molière play. The play’s stage manager turns out to be Michael, a handsome one-night stand whose further advances Maurice rebuffs. Instead, he finds himself becoming more drawn into Allan’s life as both protector and confidant. As the awareness of his actions sink in, so does their connection to his childhood.

CENTERPIECE:
Portrait of a Serial Monogamist (directed by Christina Zeidler and John Mitchell)
7:15 pm @ SIFF Cinema Egyptian

No sooner has serial monogamist Elsie (brilliantly played by comedian Diane Flacks) coolly broken up with her performance-artist girlfriend Robyn than she is back on the prowl for her next relationship. However, her new love interest, Lolli (Vanessa Dunn, lead singer of Vag Halen)—an adventurous and sexy DJ by night and photographer and barista by day—does not seem too eager for commitment, and Elsie starts to wonder if she broke up with the love of her life. Elsie’s friends, meanwhile, challenge her to stay single and please stay out of the clubs for a while. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t prospects in the dog park, as her friend Sarah (Sabrina Jalees) informs her.

Featuring a catchy pop-punk soundtrack and an unforgettable cat funeral, PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL MONOGAMIST is a clever and fresh comedy offering thoughtful insight into romance, friendships, and growing up. With the Toronto queer art scene as a backdrop to the story, writer-directors Christina Zeidler and John Mitchell get to the heart of how it feels to be that person—the one who just can’t be single for more than a couple of months—and what happens when all her friends tend to like the ex-girlfriend more. Featuring a host of comedians who pull off many hilarious moments, PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL MONOGAMIST is a lesbian comedy with a heart.

Where Are You Going, Habibi? (Directed by Tor Iben)
9:30 pm @ SIFF Cinema Egyptian

Ibrahim, a young German of Turkish descent, leads a dual life: he lives with his tradition-bound family, but outside home he is a confident gay man looking to find love and a job. Nothing is going to stop the enterprising “Ibo” as he finds his own way in life despite friction from his family and falling in love with the “wrong” person—in this case, Ali, a handsome German wrestler and petty thief. With a subtle and sweet touch, writer-director Tor Iben (DAS PHALLOMETER, SLGFF 2014) and lead actor Cem Alkan create a lovable character who, despite setbacks, is very clear about what will make him happy and where he needs to go.

“The festival--which first launched with a sold-out presentation of short films and a flyer that said ‘Queer as a Three Dollar Bill Cinema’--aspired to bring the worldwide boom in queer filmmaking to Seattle’s LGBT community, and help the community see itself on screen,” says Three Dollar Bill Cinema Executive Director Jason Plourde. “Our mission today is the same: to showcase extraordinary and award-winning work relevant to the LGBT community, and to encourage members of this community from around the world to express their creativity and tell their stories through film and video.”

The 2015 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival is produced by Three Dollar Bill Cinema.
